5 2008 International Studbook for Wattled Crane WATTLED CRANE QUICK FACTS RANGE: Eleven range countries; Ethiopia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa HABITAT: Riparian wetlands of large river basins, especially those of the Zambezi and Okavango regions, as well as smaller upland wetlands. BREEDING SEASON: NEST: Varies widely throughout range countries. Records confirm that eggs are laid in every month of the year, with peak production being May through August with another spike in October. Open grass and sedge marshes, comprised of large mounds of grasses, sedges or any plant material within reaching distance is utilized by the pair. Historically, it accounts for 746 ( ) individuals. The current living population is comprised of 236 ( ) specimens held by 80 institutions worldwide. It is interesting to note that the living international captive population has remained relatively stable over the past eight years ( ). The 31 December 2007 living international captive population stood at 236 ( ) individuals in 80 institutions. Studbook #8 Conway is currently living at the Miami Metrozoo. He was wild caught ~ 1950, with an arrival date at Saint Louis Zoo of September 28, Therefore, it has a documented captive life of 57 years, 1 month, 2 day (October 30, 2008). The current MasterPlan was published February 2007 with the assistance of the Population Management Center (PMC), Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, IL. Colleen Lynch is the PMC advisor for the Wattled Crane SSP. The 2007 plan recommended 10 transfers and 26 pairs to produce 2-3 chicks to maintain a stable population. Numbers beginning with T indicates a temporary studbook number and should not be used as a studbook number. A permanent studbook number will be assigned at a later date. Indicates sex of animal: M= male, F= female, or U= unknown Actual or estimated date of hatch. A tilde mark ~ before the date indicates an approximate date.? indicates that the hatch date is unknown Studbook number for the male parent. Unk indicates that the sire is unknown. Studbook number for the female parent. Unk indicates that the dam is unknown. Location and time span at each place. ltf (lost to follow up) will appear to the right of the last known location. The current holders local identification number, if known. Often this is the International Species Information System (ISIS) number for ISIS member institutions.
