1 Ventilation Test Instruments Heat Flow Calculations Made Using the Models 8386 and 8386A VELOCICALC Plus Air Velocity Meters Application Note ITI-124 The Models 8386 and 8386A calculate the heat flow between two points. To calculate the sensible, latent and total heat flow or the sensible heat factor, the following parameters must be logged in the VELOCICALC Plus Air Velocity Meter: flow rate, temperature, and humidity. Refer to you Operation and Service Manual for details on how to record these parameters. Sensible Heat Flow Sensible heat is dry heat. It causes a change in temperature in a substance, but not a change in the moisture content of that substance. Q S = 60c p ρqδt (English units) ORQ S = c p ρqδt/3600 (metric units) where Q S = sensible heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) c p = specific heat in Btu/lb F = Btu/lb F ( kj/kg K) ρ = air density at standard conditions = lb/ft 3 (1.202 kg/m 3 ) q = measured air flow in ft 3 /min (m 3 /hr) (assuming flow is the same at first and second measurement location) Δt = temperature difference in F ( C) (difference between first and second measurement location) Replacing constant values gives: Q S = qΔt (English units) ORQ S = 1.21qΔt/3600 (metric units) TSI and VELOCICALC are registered trademarks of TSI Incorporated. 2 Latent Heat Flow Latent heat is the heat that when supplied to, or removed from, a substance there is a change in the moisture content of the substance (change in state), but the temperature of that substance does not change. Q L = 60h fg ρqδw (English units) ORQ L = h fg ρqδw/3600 (metric units) where Q L = latent heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) h fg = latent heat of vaporization of water in Btu/lb = 1060 Btu/lb (2, kj/kg) ρ = air density at standard conditions = lb/ft 3 (1.202 kg/m 3 ) q = measured air flow in ft 3 /min (m 3 /hr) ΔW =humidity ratio difference in lb water/lb dry air (kg water/kg dry air) (difference in water content of air between first and second measurement location) Replacing constant values gives: Q L = 4770qΔW (English units) ORQ L = qΔW (metric units) Total Heat Flow Total heat is the sum of latent heat and sensible heat. Q T = Q S + Q L where Q T = total heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) Q S = sensible heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) Q L = latent heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) Sensible Heat Factor The sensible heat factor equals sensible heat divided by total heat in the air. SHF = Q S /Q T where SHF = sensible heat factor (ratio of sensible heat load to total heat load) Q S = sensible heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) Q T = total heat flow in Btu/hr (kw) EXAMPLE 1: (Imperial Units) Given at measurement location 1 (conditions inside room): dry bulb temperature t 1 = 76 F %RH 1 = 49.0% (φ 1 =.490) barometric pressure = in. 3 Given at measurement location 2 (conditions of supply air entering room): dry bulb temperature t 2 = 53 F %RH 2 = 88.0% (φ 2 =.880) flow rate q = 15,000 std ft 3 /min Find: sensible heat flow Q S, latent heat flow Q L, total heat flow Q T, and sensible heat factor SHF. Sensible heat flow Q S Q S = qΔt = (15000)( ) = 370,737 Btu/h of heat removal Latent heat flow Q L Q L = 4770qΔW, so we need to find W 1 and W 2.
