Here, we report the disovery of SkL in the polr mgneti semiondutor GV 4 S 8 with rhombohedrl (C 3v ) symmetry nd esy xis nisotropy. The SkL exists over n unusully brod temperture rnge ompred with other bulk rystls 6 12 nd the orienttion of the vorties is not ontrolled by the externl mgneti field but insted onfined to the mgneti esy xis. Supporting theory ttributes these unique fetures to new non-hirl or Néel-type of SkL 1,2,24 desribble s superposition of spin yloids in ontrst to the Bloh-type SkL in hirl mgnets desribed in terms of spin helies In non-entrosymmetri rystls, the energy ssoited with ferromgneti domin wlls n be negtive, hene, the homogeneous ferromgneti stte beomes unstble ginst SkL formtion 1 5,25. Two bsi types of mgneti domin wlls n form different skyrmioni spin textures 1 3,24. Bloh-type domin wlls, where the spins rotte in the plne prllel to the domin boundry, n form whirlpool-like skyrmions with given hndedness s observed in hirl mgnets In ontrst, Néel-type domin wlls, where the spins rotte in plne perpendiulr to the domin boundry, n produe nonhirl skyrmions. (See Fig. 5 for n illustrtion of the two skyrmion types.) This seond skyrmion rhetype, expeted to emerge in polr mgnets with C nv rystl symmetry 1 3,24, hs not been observed yet. We revel the formtion of suh SkL in GV 4 S 8, mgneti semiondutor from this rystl symmetry lss, vi mgneti suseptibility, tomi fore mirosopy (AFM) nd smllngle neutron sttering (SANS) mesurements. GV 4 S 8, member of the lunr spinel fmily 26 32, hs non-entrosymmetri ubi (T d ) struture t room temperture 32. Lunr desribes the lk of every seond G tom ompred to the norml spinel struture. These ordered defets brek the vndium pyrohlore lttie into network of lternting lrger nd smller V 4 tetrhedr, the so-lled brething pyrohlore lttie. The mgneti building bloks re the smller V 4 lusters with spin 1/2, nd form fe entered ubi (FCC) lttie. The hybridiztion on single V 4 unit leds to one unpired eletron oupying triply degenerte luster orbitl. This orbitl degenery is lifted by oopertive Jhn-Teller distortion tht drives ubi to rhombohedrl struturl trnsition t T s =42 K 32. In the polr rhombohedrl (C 3v ) phse the FCC lttie is strethed long one of the four ubi 111 xes 32. The struturl trnsition retes multi-domin stte with submiron-thik sheets of the four different rhombohedrl domins, s seen in Fig. 1. At T s the mgneti exhnge intertion hnges from ntiferro- to ferromgneti nd the mteril undergoes mgneti trnsition t T C =13 K, temperture very lose to the Curie-Weiss temperture in the rhombohedrl phse 33. In the inset of Fig. 1b, the dependene of the mgnetiztion urves on the field orienttion indite onsiderble nisotropy. Indeed, our men-field nlysis shows the ground stte to be n esy xis ferromgnet with J 8.7 K nd J 8.3 K s desribed in the Supplementry Informtion. Here, J nd J respetively denote the exhnge oupling for spin omponents prllel nd perpendiulr to the esy xis, whih itself oinides with the diretion of the rhombohedrl distortion. These exhnge vlues re lso onsistent with T C =13 K. GV 4 S 8 ws onsidered s n ordinry ferromgnet below T 32,33 C, though there is report bout low-field mgneti nomlies in this mteril 34. The esy xes of mgnetilly fvoured/unfvoured domins re indited by thik/thin green lines. For B [111], besides the yloidl nd the SkL sttes, there re two dditionl phses extending up to higher fields lbelled s the yloidl* nd the SkL* sttes., Phse boundries from pnels d-f, fter projeting the mgneti field onto the esy xis of the orresponding domins. SkL 2 the mgneti stte is fr from ordinry nd ontins severl neighbouring phses. Below T C, the low-field mgnetiztion displys sequene of steps inditing metmgneti trnsitions (see Fig. 1b). The positions of the steps, ssoited with shrp peks in the fieldderivtive of the mgnetiztion, re different for mgneti field, B, pplied prllel to the [111], [11] nd [1] ubi xes. The orresponding phse digrms re shown in Figs. 1d-f. Similr low-field steps hve been observed to seprte the helil, SkL nd onil sttes in MnSi 8,35,36, Mn 1 x (Co,Fe) x Si 37, FeGe 17 nd Cu 2 OSeO 1 3. In GV 4 S 8 we ssign the three different mgneti phses s yloidl, SkL nd ferromgneti bsed on AFM imging, SANS experiments nd theoretil lultions s desribed below. For B [111] there exist two dditionl mgneti sttes besides the yloidl, SkL nd ferromgneti sttes. This rises due to multi-domin nture of the rystl nd the esy xis nisotropy, sine only one of the domins hs its esy xis prllel to B, while the esy xes of the other three domins [11 1], [1 11] nd [ 111] lie t 71 degrees to B. For these ltter three domins the non-olliner spin strutures survive to higher fields beuse the mgneti nisotropy energy is muh lrger thn the Zeemn energy, nd only the field omponent prllel to the esy xis of eh domin n influene its mgneti stte. This leds to the two dditionl phses persisting up to B=8 mt nd 16 mt, mrked with sterisks in Fig. 1d, nd ssigned s the yloidl nd SkL sttes ommon for these three domins. For B [11], the yloidl nd SkL phses ommon for the two domins with esy xes [111] nd [11 1] re indited in Fig. 1e. The other two domins

Colour oding orresponds to dissipted power due to mgneti intertions between the tip nd the smple. A modulted struture with single q-vetor nd orresponding periodiity of y=17.7±.4 nm is observed on the left side of the domin boundry (yellow dshed line). A similr pttern rotted by bout 9 degrees emerges on the other domin, though the mgneti ontrst is weker. b, Mgneti pttern mesured in the sme re t T =8.9 K nd in B=5 mt. Distorted tringulr ltties, rotted reltive to eh other by pproximtely 9 degrees, re observed in both domins with better ontrst on the right side. The re with red border is sled by 3 ording to the red rrows, i.e. perpendiulr to the diretion of the shortest lttie periodiity. The re, trnsformed to squre shpe fter this ontrtion, is displyed in pnel. The green spots indite regulr tringulr SkL with lttie onstnt of sky =22.2±1 nm nd vortex ores prllel to the [111] xis. For more detils bout the dt nlysis nd the evolution of the mgneti pttern s funtion of mgneti field see the Supplementry Informtion. d, Two setions of hexgonl rry of vortex lines running long the [111] xis. The intersetions of the vorties with the (111) nd (1) plnes respetively form regulr nd distorted tringulr lttie. with esy xes perpendiulr to B nnot ontribute to the mgnetiztion is this field rnge. For B [1], the esy xis of eh domin spn the sme ngle to B, hene ll domins shre ommon phse boundries s shown in Fig. 1f. Phse boundries for ll field orienttions n be sled together by projeting the field onto the esy xes of the orresponding domins (see Fig. 1). Surprisingly, the SkL stte exists over n unusully brod temperture rnge, down to.68t C, ompred with other bulk rystls where this phse is stble only over 2-3% rnge immeditely below T C 8 1. To observe diretly the spin pttern in rel spe we performed AFM imging in mgneti fields pplied perpendiulr to the smple surfe using mgneti ntilever tips 12. For B [1], Figs. 2 nd b show imges of the sme surfe re tken t T =8.5 K nd 8.9 K in B=2 mt nd 5 mt, respetively. The tril running long the [1] xis nd dividing eh imge into two hlves is struturl domin boundry. Although ll four domins should host the sme mgneti sttes for B [1], we found tht the mgneti pttern lwys hnged t the domin boundries, nd often it ws not possible to hieve good ontrst for the two sides simultneously. Sine the wve vetors of the mgneti modultion (q-vetor) re expeted to be perpendiulr to the esy xis, they n be different for different domins, resulting in rottion of the mgneti pttern between the two sides. In Fig. 2, modulted struture with single q-vetor, representtive of the zero- nd low-field region, is observed with good ontrst on the left side. Our lultions desribed lter reprodue this phse s yloidl spin stte, where the spins rotte in plne ontining the q-vetor. This is in ontrst to the helil order generlly found in other SkL mterils, where the spins rotte in the plne perpendiulr to q. Assuming tht the q-vetor is perpendiulr to the esy xis, whih is either the [11 1] or [1 11] xis for the leftside domin, the periodiity of the yloid in B=2 mt is y =17.7±.4 nm. (For more detils see the Supplementry Informtion.) This vlue is onfirmed by our SANS study. With inresing field the yloidl pttern trnsforms into distorted tringulr lttie s shown in Fig. 2b. The sme pttern rotted by bout 9 degrees ppers on both sides of the domin wll, though the ontrst is weker on the left side. As demonstrted in Fig. 2, re-sling the lttie on the right side by 3 perpendiulr to the diretion of the shortest lttie onstnt leds to regulr tringulr lttie with lttie onstnt of sky =22.2±1 nm. This vlue is lso onsistent with our SANS dt. The observed distortion is nturlly explined by the orienttionl onfinement of the SkL. Sine the vortex ores re not ligned prllel to the mgneti field but insted the esy xis, whih is either the [111] or [ 111] xis for the right-side domin, they form regulr tringulr lttie in the hrd plne. Therefore, the terminus of the vorties on the (1) surfe form distorted tringulr lttie s skethed in Fig. 2d. When

Lbels refer to the mgneti sttes ssigned in Fig. 1f. The dshed irles hving ommon dimeter in ll the imges help to visulize the hnge in the mgnitude of the q-vetors. Vertil dshed lines indite the mgneti phse boundries ording to Fig. 1d nd f. The splitting of eh Brgg pek into two peks with different q ws resolved for B [111] in the field rnge of B=44-64 mt (see the Supplementry Informtion) whih rises from the oexistene of yloidl* nd SkL sttes in different domins. further inresing the field, the mgneti pttern disppers inditing uniform ferromgneti stte. SANS ws employed to onfirm the bulk nture of the mgneti strutures nd determine the q-vetors diretly. Shrp mgneti Brgg peks were lwys observed t q- vetors prllel to the ubi 11 diretions irrespetive of the field orienttion, s shown in Fig. 3. For B [111] the ±q-vetors form regulr hexgon, while for B [1] squre of four spots is observed. These results, in greement with the results of AFM imging, onfirm the orienttionl onfinement of the SkL, i.e. the lignment of the vortex lines prllel to the esy xis of eh domin. It lso shows tht in both the yloidl nd SkL sttes, the three possible ±q pirs re prllel to the three [11] xes lying in the hrd plne. For B [111] ple ring struture ppers besides the hexgon in low fields. This implies tht the q-vetors re not fully pinned to the [11] xes but tht they n point in ny diretion within the hrd plne, t lest in the surfe nd domin boundry regions observed by AFM. In eh rhombohedrl domin the yloidl stte n emerge with six different q-vetors, while the SkL stte is unique, nd desribble s superposition of three yloids whose q-vetors sum to zero. First-order Brgg peks observed using SANS do not llow diret distintion between the yloidl nd the SkL sttes due to the presene of mgneti nd struturl domins. Nevertheless, the field dependene of the mgneti periodiity ( = 2π/ q ) lerly indites the phse boundries for both field orienttions s shown in Fig. 3h. The oexistene of the yloidl* nd SkL sttes in different domins for B [111] is lso tred vi the splitting of q. In GV 4 S 8, the S=1/2 spins sit on n FCC lttie strethed long the [111] diretion, whih n be regrded s tringulr ltties stked long [111]. To determine the spin ptterns in the different phses we studied the following lssil Heisenberg model on the tringulr lttie by Monte Crlo tehnique; where H ex = H = H ex + H DM + H Zeemn, (1) <i,j> H DM = <i,j> H Zeemn = B i ( J m xi m xj + J m yi m yj + J m zi m zj ), D ij (m i m j ), m zi.

The q-vetors of the Brgg peks re loted long the [11] diretions (white lines) in the hrd plne, for both the yloidl nd SkL sttes. For the exhnge intertion H ex, we onsider ferromgneti oupling with XXZ-type nisotropy, where the z (esy) xis is prllel to the [111] xis. The diretion of the Dzyloshinskii-Moriy vetors, D ij, re determined by the FCC rystl symmetry s shown in Fig. 4. For the lultion we hose J /J =1.6 nd D/J =.35, where D = D ij. This model provides three ordered phses: the yloidl, SkL nd ferromgneti sttes. Figure 4 displys the spin ptterns obtined for the yloidl nd SkL sttes. The skyrmions exhibit the Néel-type domin wll lignment long the rdil diretion from their ores to their peripheries. Nmely, the spins rotte within the plne prllel to the rdil diretion. The Fourier omponents of the mgnetiztion onfigurtions in the yloidl nd the SkL sttes re displyed in Figs. 4d nd g, respetively. These results, in full greement with SANS dt, show tht the ±q-vetors re prllel to the [11] xes in the hrd plne in both sttes. Extension of the model in Eq. (1) to the distorted FCC lttie requires dditionl prmeters s both J /J nd D/J n be different for bonds within nd between the tringulr lttie plnes. Insted, we dpted the ontinuum model developed by Bogdnov nd Hubert for C nv symmetry 2 to the ubi lttie in order to reprodue the min fetures of the phse digrm. Here, D ij s re perpendiulr to the bonds long the x nd y diretions s shown in the inset of Fig. 5, nd vlues of J /J =1.6 nd D/J =.48 were used. We stress tht irrespetive of the detils of possible models, GV 4 S 8 n only host Néel-type SkL due to the orienttion of Dzyloshinskii- Moriy vetors governed by its C 3v symmetry 1 4,24. Figure 5 displys the phse digrm obtined for the simple ubi lttie. In greement with experiment the tringulr SkL ppers only t finite tempertures. The skyrmions hve the sme Néel-type pttern, shown in Fig. 5b, s obtined for the tringulr lttie model. The yloidl phse remins stble even t T = in ontrst to the experimentl observtion. This disrepny likely rises from not inluding orretions due to quntum flututions in our lssil Heisenberg model. In new lss of mterils we observed SkL stte emerging over n extrordinrily brod temperture rnge. While hirl or Bloh-type skyrmions hve been investigted extensively in hirl mgnets, lunr spinels provide unique ren to study nother topologil spin pttern, the non-hirl or Néel-type skyrmions. We found tht the strong orienttionl onfinement of the vorties ensures the robustness of two distint skyrmioni sttes with ore mgnetiztion pointing either up or down the esy xis. This my filitte unique mgneti ontrol of the SkL, sine we expet tht the SkL indued by mgneti field prllel to the esy xis n be rotted within the hrd plne by n dditionl trnsverse field omponent. Suh mgneti ontrol is inoneivble in ubi helimgnets where vortex ores instntneously o-lign with the mgneti field. In ddition, the polr rystl struture of lunr spinels 31,32 my be exploited for non-dissiptive eletri field ontrol of the SkL.

The skyrmion lttie stte orresponds to Néel-type SkL. b Methods Smple synthesis nd hrteriztion. Single rystls of GV 4 S 8 were grown by the hemil vpour trnsport method using iodine s the trnsport gent. The rystls re typilly uboids or hexgonl slbs with msses rnging from 1-6 mg. The smple qulity ws heked by powder X-ry diffrtion, speifi het nd mgnetiztion mesurements. The rystllogrphi orienttion of the smples ws determined by X-ry Lue nd/or neutron diffrtion prior to the mgnetiztion, SANS nd AFM studies. The mgnetiztion mesurements were performed using n MPMS from Quntum Design. The field dependene of the mgnetiztion ws mesured in inresing temperture steps following n initil zero-field ooling to 2 K. The temperture dependene of the mgnetiztion ws lso mesured in different fields. For both of these pprohes, we found no hysteresis in the mgnetiztion urves thus inditing tht the SkL stte nnot be quenhed, i.e. stbilized s metstble stte, in this ompound. Non-ontt tomi fore mirosopy. All AFM dt presented were obtined by non-ontt tomi fore mirosopy (n-afm) performed in n Omiron Prmgnet ryogeni ultr-high vuum (UHV) STM/AFM instrument using the RHK R9-ontrol eletronis. The mirosope fetures interferometri detetion whih s sideeffet llows the tuning of the ntilevers effetive qulity ftor Q eff by vrying the lser intensity used for the detetion of the ntilever motion. For ll mesurements we used mgnetilly oted AFM-tips from the SSS-QMFMR series from NANOSENSORS TM in order to hieve sensitivity to mgneti fores. In n-afm mode the frequeny f of n osillting ntilever is mesured vi phse loked loop nd kept onstnt by the topogrphy feedbk loop. The frequeny shift f with respet to the resonne frequeny f fr wy from the smple provides mesure of the fore grdient pprent between tip nd smple. Additionlly, the osilltion mplitude A is kept onstnt by djusting the exittion mplitude A ex. Eletrostti intertions between tip nd smple hve been minimized using n dditionl FM-Kelvin ontrol loop without ny dditionl lterl informtion in the mesured ontt potentil differene. We ould not obtin mgneti ontrst in mgneti fore mirosopy mode, where the tip is retrted from the surfe nd the onservtive mgneti fores re mesured vi the indued frequeny shift f. Insted, dissiptive fore intertion indued the mgneti ontrst in the exittion hnnel when the tip ws brought lose to the smple surfe. The nture of this dissiptive intertion is subjet to further investigtions. We ould obtin suffiient mgneti ontrst only in imges reorded below 1 K, whih is likely relted to the low spin density of the mteril orresponding to single spin per formul unit nd the strong flututions of the S=1/2 spins. With knowledge of the ntilever s spring onstnt k, the tul osilltion mplitude A, the resonne frequeny f, the effetive qulity ftor Q eff, nd the signl-to-drive rtio R fr wy from the smple we ompute the dissipted power from the mesured exittion mplitude s P = πkfr A Q eff, A ex. (2) For the imges in figure 2 these prmeters re k = 3.4 N/m, A = 3 nm, Q eff, = , f = 7.87 khz, R = 3.92 µm/v with exittion mplitudes rnging from 15 µv to 1.1 mv. Smll-ngle neutron sttering. Smll-ngle neutron sttering (SANS) ws used to study the longwvelength, mirosopi mgneti sttes in 25.5 mg single rystl smple of GV 4 S 8. The SANS mesurements were rried out using the D33 instrument t the Institut Lue-Lngevin (ILL), Grenoble, Frne, nd the SANS- II instrument t the Swiss Splltion Neutron Soure (SINQ), Pul Sherrer Institut, Switzerlnd. In typil instrument onfigurtion, neutrons of wvelength 5 Å were seleted with FWHM spred ( λ/λ) of 1%, nd ollimted over distne of 5.3 m before the sm-
7 7 ple. The sttered neutrons were olleted by twodimensionl multi-detetor pled 5 m behind the smple. The single rystl smple of GV 4 S 8 ws mounted inside horizontl field ryomgnet tht ws instlled on the bemline so tht the diretion of pplied mgneti field ws pproximtely prllel to the neutron bem. The smple ws oriented to hve horizontl sttering plne tht inluded the [1] nd [111] rystl diretions. Applying the mgneti field long either of these diretions ws hieved by simply rotting the smple stik inside the ryomgnet. The SANS mesurements were done by both tilting nd rotting the smple nd ryomgnet together through ngulr rnges tht moved the mgneti diffrtion peks through the Ewld sphere. The SANS ptterns presented in Fig. 3 were onstruted by summing together the detetor mesurements tken t eh rottion ngle, whih llows ll of the Brgg spots to be presented in single imge. Theoretil lultions. The Monte-Crlo lultions for Fig. 4 re performed for the model in Eq. 1 on the two-dimensionl tringulr lttie with sites, while those for Fig. 5 re for the model in Eq. 1 on the three-dimensionl ubi lttie with sites. For both ses periodi boundry onditions re imposed. The XXZ-type nisotropy in the exhnge term omes from the orbitl ordering with 3z 2 r 2 -type orbitls pointing in the [111] diretion tken s the z xis in the lultion 32. The rtio of J /J ws determined from men-field nlysis of the low-temperture mgnetiztion urves, with the vlue of D/J fixed ording to the observed yloidl pith, y. As long s the mgneti sttes of slow sptil vrition suh s yloid nd skyrmion re onerned, influene from omplited rystl struture beomes redued, whih justifies the hoie to study the phse digrm using lttie spin model on the simple ubi lttie. In the ltter se, the Dzyloshinskii-Moriy term is given by H DM = D i [ŷ (m i m i+ˆx ) ˆx (m i m i+ŷ )].(3) By ompring the energies of the three mgneti phses, we find tht only the yloidl nd the ferromgneti sttes re stble t T =, while the SkL stte is not. The trnsition points t finite T re determined ording to the lulted temperture-dependene of the speifi het nd the net mgnetiztion. The speifi het hs pek t the trnsition from the prmgneti to the ordered phses. At the trnsition from the ferromgneti phse to the yloidl or the SkL phse, the mgnetiztion shows shrp drop with inresing temperture, while the speifi het shows lmost no nomly. Mgneti strutures in these phses re identified from both the rel-spe nd the reiprol spe mppings of their lol mgnetiztion onfigurtions. 1 Bogdnov, A. N. & Yblonskii, D. A.
