1 Mirowve mgnetohirl effet in Cu 2 OSeO 3 Mshito Mohizuki 1,2 1 Deprtment of Physis nd Mthemtis, Aoym Gkuin University, Sgmihr, Kngw , Jpn 2 PRESTO, Jpn Siene nd Tehnology Ageny, Kwguhi, Sitm , Jpn rxiv: v1 [ond-mt.str-el] 22 Apr 5 We theoretilly find tht in multiferroi hirl mgnet Cu 2OSeO 3, resonnt mgneti exittions re oupled to olletive osilltion of eletri polriztion, nd therey ttin simultneous tivity to mgneti field nd eletri field. Beuse of interferene etween these mgneti nd eletri tivtion proesses, this mteril hosts gignti mgnetohirl dihroism on mirowves, tht is, the diretionl dihroism t gighertz frequenies in Frdy geometry. The sorption intensity of mirowve differs y s muh s 3% depending on whether its propgtion diretion is prllel or ntiprllel to the externl mgneti field. PACS numers: g,78.2.Ls,78.2.Bh,78.7.Gq Colletive exittions of spins in mgnets, so-lled mgnons or spin wves, n e tivted not only vi diret proess with mgneti field oupled to mgnetiztions ut lso vi n eletri exittion y eletri field oupled to hrge degrees of freedom. When the mgnon or spin-wve modes hve simultneous tivity to the nd omponents of eletromgneti wves, interferene etween the two tivtion proesses, tht is, the mgnetilly tivting nd the eletrilly tivting proesses, gives rise to peulir optil nd/or mirowve phenomen, so-lled optil ME effet. One of the most importnt exmples is the diretionl dihroism, tht is, oppositely propgting eletromgneti wves exhiit different sorptions. Multiferroi mterils with onurrent mgneti nd ferroeletri orders [1 8] provide n opportunity to relize the eletri-dipole tive mgnons (so-lled eletromgnons) [9 13], nd thus the optil ME effet vi the mgnetoeletri oupling [14 16]. Indeed oservtions of the diretionl dihroism hve een reported for severl multiferroi mterils suh s B 2 CoGe 2 O 7 [17 19], RMnO 3 (R =rre-erth ions) [2, ], nd CuFe 1 x G x O 2 [22], in whih nontrivil spin orders indue the ferroeletri polriztion vi the reltivisti spin-orit intertion. In these mterils, the optil ME effet is oserved t the eletromgnon resonne frequenies in the terhertz (Tz) regime. The diretionl dihroism is oserved lso t higher frequenies, i.e., x-ry nd visile-light regimes in severl polr mgnets, whih is used y eletron trnsitions mong the spin-orit multiplets [23 29]. owever, oservtions of the effet t gighertz (Gz) frequenies re quite limited nd the effet oserved so fr is very tiny whose differene in sorption intensity is only 2.5% t most [32], while the diretionl dihroism t Gz frequenies is ntiipted for pplition to mirowve devies [3]. This is euse most of the well-known multiferroi mterils sed on simple spirl or ntiferromgneti spin strutures with short-period modultion tend to hve reltively lrge spin-wve gps of severl mev, whih inevitly results in rther high resonne frequenies in Tz regime. To hieve the mirowve ME effet, long-period mgneti textures with tiny spin-wve gp should e exmined, nd slowly modulting mgneti strutures indued y the Dzyloshinskii-Moriy intertion (DMI) re promising for this purpose. Indeed, the nonreiprol diretionl dihroism of mirowves in Voigt geometry ws theoretilly predited for the DMIindued skyrmion phse [31]. In this Letter, we theoretilly predit tht eletromgnon exittions in mgnetilly ordered phses of Cu 2 OSeO 3 exhiits unpreedentedly lrge mgnetohirl dihroism t Gz frequenies, tht is, the mirowve diretionl dihroism in Frdy geometry. In the presene of, the onil spin phse or the field-polrized ferrimgneti phse emerges in the ulk smples depending on the strength of. When is pplied in ertin diretion, nd mirowve is irrdited prllel or ntiprllel to, the sorption intensities for the oppositely propgting mirowves differ y s muh s 3%. Suh huge diretionl dihroism t mirowve frequenies hs never een oserved in single mteril. This effet is tred k to the resonntly enhned mgnetoeletri oupling, nd therefore essentilly distint in mirosopi mehnism from the trditionl mirowve non-reiprol devie sed on mirowve polriztion, potentilly leding to unique mirowve devie. TherystlndmgnetistruturesofCu 2 OSeO 3 onsist of network of tetrhedr omposed of four Cu 2+ (S=1/2) ions t their pexes s shown in Figs. 1() nd (). This four-spin ssemly n e regrded s mgneti unit, nd is desried y lssil mgnetiztion vetor m i whose norm m is unity. We employ lssil eisenerg model on ui lttie to desrie the mgnetism in ulk speimen of Cu 2 OSeO 3 [35 37], whih ontins the ferromgneti-exhnge intertion nd the Dzyloshinskii-Moriy intertion mong the effetive mgnetiztions m i nd the Zeemn oupling to

Shemti figure of the spin struture in the onil phse is shown in Fig. 1(d), in whih oth the propgtion vetor Q nd 45 the net mgnetiztion M re prllel to. Note tht the spin textures onsidered here re slowly vrying in spe, nd thus the oupling to the kground rystl struture is signifintly wek. This justifies our tretment with spin model on the ui lttie fter the orse grining of mgnetiztions. The presene or sene of the ferroeletri polriztion P nd, if ny, its diretion n e known from the symmetry onsidertion[38, 4]. The rystl struture of Cu 2 OSeO 3 elongs to the hirl ui P2 1 3 point group, whih hs three-fold rottion xes, 3, long 111, nd two-fold srew xis, 2 1, long 1 s shown in Fig. 1(e). This rystl symmetry is not polr, nd thus there exists no spontneous P. Although the onil nd the ferromgneti spin sttes re not polr, either, omintion of the rystl nd the mgneti symmetries renders the system polr, nd llows the emergene of P. As shown in Fig. 1(f), the emergene of P [1] perpendiulr to the net mgnetiztion M( ) is expeted for the onil nd the ferromgneti sttes formed under [11] sine only the 2 1 xis long [1] remins s symmetry xis. On the other hnd, the emergene of P is foridden under [1] sine three 2 1 xes survive s shown in Fig. 1(g). Mirosopilly the lol polriztion p i t the ith tetrhedron is given using the mgnetiztion omponents m i, m i, nd m i s, p i = (p i,p i,p i ) = λ(m i m i,m i m i,m i m i ). The oupling onstnt λ is evluted s λ= µcm from the experimentl dt [31]. Figure 1(h) shows lulted net polriztion P in the field-polrized ferromgneti stte when is pplied within the -plne s funtion of the ngle θ etween nd the xis (see the inset). We find tht the positive (negtive) P emerges long [1] when θ is negtive (positive). Aording to Fig. 1(h), one relizes tht osilltion of M ( M ω [1]) indues osilltion of P ( P ω [1]) when M [1] [see Figs. 2()-()], nd onversely P ω [1] indues M ω [1] vi the mgnetoeletri oupling. The effetive field i eff is lulted from the miltonin = + (t) s i eff = / m i. The first term is the model miltonin given y Eq. (1). The perturtion term (t) represents short retngulr pulse of mgneti field (t) or eletri field E(t), whih re given, respetively, y, (t) = gµ B µ (t) m i (4) i nd (t) = i E(t) p i. The lultions re performed using system of N= sites with the periodi oundry ondition. In Fig 3, we disply imginry prts of the lulted dynmil mgneti, dieletri, nd mgnetoeletri suseptiilities, i.e., Imχ mm, Imχ ee, ndimχ em, sfuntions of the frequeny for the onil stte nd the ferromgneti stte when the stti mgneti field [1]( ) is pplied. These suseptiilities hve resonnt peks in the Gz regime in greement with the mirowve experiments [32, 41]. Moreover ll of these dynmil suseptiilities in eh phse hve peks t the sme frequeny inditing tht the resonnt modes hve simultneous tivity to [1]( ) nd [1]( ). This mgnetoeletri tivity uses the mirowve mgnetohirleffetincu 2 OSeO 3 [seefig.2(d)]. We find tht the mirowve sorption is resonntly enhned t the eigen-frequeny of the eletromgnon exittion, nd there exists signifint differene etween α + nd α. Clulted mgnitude of the diretionl dihroism α/α where α = α + α is plotted in Fig. 5. This quntity is governed y the mplitude of ferroeletri polriztion P, whih is nerly proportionl to the squre of the net mgnetiztion M 2. The dihroism inreses in the onil stte with the growth of P nd M s the mgneti field inreses. In ontrst, one the system enters the ferromgneti stte, the sturted M gives nerly onstnt diretionl dihroism lthough there still exists slight field-dependene due to the field-dependent resonnt frequeny vi ω in Eq. (7). The diretionl dihroism is enhned t the phse oundry etween the onil nd the ferromgneti phses, nd its mgnitude rehes s muh s 3%. Clulted eletromgnon resonne frequeny plotted in Fig. 5 shows deresing ehvior in the onil stte, while inresing ehvior in the ferromgneti stte s the mgneti field inreses. This ehvior is in good greement with the experimentl oservtions [32, 41] nd oinides with nlytil formul of the spin-wve gp given in Ref. [44]. In summry, we hve theoretilly predited tht mgnetilly ordered phses in the hirl multiferrois Cu 2 OSeO 3 host gignti mirowve mgnetohirl dihroism. This phenomenon results from interferene etween the mgneti nd eletri tivtion proesses of eletromgnons with Gz resonne frequenies. It hs een demonstrted tht long-period mgneti strutures in the hirl multiferrois without inversion symmetry n host gignti dynmil mgnetoeletri phenomen t Gz regime. In order to further enhne the effet, serh for novel hirl multiferrois with lrger P or stronger mgnetoeletri oupling is needed. For exmple, hirl multiferrois sed on the inverse Dzyloshinskii-Moriy mehnism [2] s n origin of its P is worth trying to serh euse this mehnism tends to indue lrge P reltive to the spin-dependent metllignd hyridiztion mehnism in Cu 2 OSeO 3.
