The low dielectric losses, the inherent s e l f h e a l i n g ±propety, and the greatly increased microfarad per unit volume make these designs ideal where reliability and small size are essential. The following should be considered when mounting capacitors containing the pressure sensitive interrupter. There must be a clearance of at least 0.5 inches(12.7mm) between the tops of the terminals and / or the assembled wire connector and a plane perpendicular to the capacitor terminals. In addition, care should be taken to ensure that there still is adequate electrical clearance between the terminals and the overhead surface after pressure sensitive interrupter operation. In certain cases capacitors are mounted with the top of the capacitor case resting on the chassis and the terminals protruding through the chassis. Hotspot Temperature The temperature of the hottest spot on the case surface under operating conditions.

6 TECHICAL IFRATI PERATIG TEPERATURE In capacitor applications there are three temperatures that important: (1) Ambient Temperature (2) Hotspot Temperature (3) Dielectric Hotspot Temperature Ambient Temperature The temperature of the air in immediate vicinty of the capacitor, i.e. at a distance of less than 1 inch from the capacitor surface. Hotspot Temperature The temperature of the hottest spot on the case surface under operating conditions. This spot will usually be located on the flaf surface of ovals and on the larger side for rectangulars 2/3 of the way up from the bottom of the case. Dielectric Hotspot Temperature This is the temperature of the hottest spot inside the capacitor. It will usually be located near the center of the capacitor roll. This temperature has the most direct effect on the life of the unit, unfortunately, it is not readily measurable. The other specification limits for the capacitors are designed to ensure that this temperature is kept within acceptable limits. DISSIPATI FACTR All capacitors have certain resistive components associated with them due to the resistivity of the foil electrodes and internal connections as well as the dielectric losses. The total of these components is sometimes referred to as the equivalent series resistance or ESR (Rc). The Dissipation Factor is defined mathematically as the tangen of the angle between the reactance Xc and the impedance Zc of the capacitor. obviously, the smaller the angle the closer the capacitor is to a perfect capacitor. Dissipation Factor = tan tan = Rc Xc The voltamperes through the capacitor is given by : VA = I 2 Xc Watts loss = VA øtan I 2 Rc = tan tan = I 2 Rc The term I 2 R losses is also used to describe the capacitor losses. For a sinusoidal voltage waveform the voltamperes is given by : VA = 2 f CV 2 for a non - sinusoidal voltage waveform the expression becomes : VA = 2 C ( f1v12+f2v22+ ) where f1, f2 are the frequencies of the harmonic components and V1, V2, are their amplitudes. The important thing to note is that the frequency has a direct effect on thermal losses of the capacitor. 63
