2 GENERAL INFORMATION Rated capacitance The capacitance of a capacitor at 20 marked on the capacitor. The unit is microfarad (µf) Capacitance tolerance Admitted capacitance deviation from the rated capacitance at 20 Rated voltage (V R ) The voltage (r.m.s. value) which is permitted to be applied continuously across the terminals of the capacitor, and which is marked on the capacitor Rated frequency The frequency for which the capacitor is designated to comply with the specified requirements. Rated current The value calculated from the rated frequency, rated capacitance and rated voltage using the following formula: Rated current = 2πx(rated frequency) x (rated capacitance) x (rated voltage) 2 x 10-6 Rated VAC The value calculated from the rated frequency, rated voltage using the following formula: Rated Va=2πx(rated frequency) x (rated capacitance) x (rated voltage) 2 x 10-6 Rated current duration The time during which a capacitor can serve continuously carrying the current or the total time during which a capacitor can serve intermittently carrying the current under the rated conditions. The time as a target in designing a capacitor rationally in correlation with the service duration of the apparatus in which the capacitor is used. Maximum permissible temperature The limit of temperature permissible for the hottest spot on the capacitor when the capacitor and apparatus equipped with the capacitor are in normal operation and the temperature is almost stabilized. 2

3 Minimum permissible temperature The limit of ambient temperature on the lower side at which the permissible overvoltage can be applied on the capacitor without trouble. Maximum permissible overvoltage(5): The limit of overvoltage at the rated frequency which is not harmful to practical service(6), when the voltage is applied continuously across terminals of the capacitor. However, instantaneous voltage is excluded. Notes: (5) The permissible overvoltage includes the following overvoltage 1.Overvoltage due to fluctuation of supply voltage. 2.Overvoltage due to characteristics of apparatus containing the capacitor (6) Meaning of is not harmful to practical service is that the effect will not cause shortening of the life remarkably, whereas the characteristics of the like need not conform to the specified values at the rated conditions. Dielectric dissipation factor The ratio of the value of capacitor loss (W) to the value of VA of the capacitor. When placing an order or inquiring sample please specify the following, as much as you can: The standard service conditions are as given below, and unless otherwise specified, the capacitors are used under these conditions (1) Relative Humidity : The relative humidity shall be not more than 85% (2) Altitude : The altitude shall be as follows: a. Not more than 2000m for capacitors used in induction motors b. Not more than 3000m for capacitors used in discharge lamp circuits (3) Maximum Permissible Overvoltage The maximum permissible oervoltage shall be 110% of the rated voltage. (4) Maximum Permissible Overcurrent The maximum permissible VA shall be 130% of the rated current (5) Maximum Permissible VA The maximum permissible VA shall be 135% of the rated VA. 3
