but that s only the beginning! What s next? LHC project Measure properties of Higgs with high precision: we have more questiono now than before the Higgs! 29 15March2014 L.Rossi@RheinMeeting

Some basic factors of scientific research Each discovery/answer is such that opens toward something else, toward a level of certainty even deeper or closer to truth. This new level do not falsify the previous level, rather it includes it in better, wider picture. Scientific knowledge is inhexaustable. 15March2014 L.Rossi@RheinMeeting
Some basic factors of scientific research Our knowledge is limited and never final (see above) or perfect. If this provisional (or temporary) nature of scientific knowledge is not perceived as a sign may generate: Anxiety to control everything (which is impossible and the result is the scandal and refuse of science) Fear (ultimately we are not certain of the goodness of our destiny) 15March2014 L.Rossi@RheinMeeting
A reasonable certainty LHC project On the other side the fact that knowledge is intrinsically provisional is accepted as a sign of a structural actraction reality exerts upon us, it can open to the acceptation of the ultimate Mistery: the certainty is about the gratuity of the world and of myself. (not even quantum mechanics is self-creating) The free will of the subject in understanding the signs (or marks) that the Mistery send us through the reality, including the scientific reality, is fundamental and non-replaceable. 15March2014 L.Rossi@RheinMeeting
Europe: would today be able to found a «novel CERN»? The spirit of the founding fathers of CERN is the same as the one of the politicians that have founded Europe (Konrad Adenauer, Alcide De Gasperi, Robert Schuman ) Europe is not at first a common market: it is a cultural identity, open to the world CERN was born to put in common ideas and instruments, beyond the national scale: knowledge is a value «per se» (in itself) The success of CERN is due to its strong roots and its openness. 15March2014 L.Rossi@RheinMeeting
The web: shows that truth is valuable! 1989 WEB is born at CERN 2009 the celebration 15March2014 Tim Berners Lee Robert Cailliau
After the Web: GRID LHC computing GRID will be the future generation of informatic infrastructure to provide a computing and analysis power ever attained. Ballon (30 Km) Pile de CD contenant une année de donn du LHC! (~ 20 Concorde (15 Km) Mt. Blanc (4.8 Km) 15March2014 L.Rossi@RheinMeeting 39

power applications: renewable energy transport Lucio Rossi Milano March
Genuine tradition generates what is beyond it: refining candles would not have led candle into electric bulbs Thanks for the attention! Rhein_Meeting
