Quantum matter with quasiparticles: Quasiparticles are additive excitations: The low-lying excitations of the many-body system can be identified as a set {n } of quasiparticles with energy " E = P n " + P, F n n +... Note: The electron liquid in one dimension and the fractional quantum Hall state both have quasiparticles; however, the quasiparticles do not have the same quantum numbers as an electron.

Quantum matter with quasiparticles: Quasiparticles eventually collide with each other. Such collisions eventually leads to thermal equilibration in a chaotic quantum state, but the equilibration takes a long time. In a Fermi liquid, this time is of order ~E F /(k B T ) 2 as T! 0, where E F is the Fermi energy.

Quantum matter without quasiparticles: No quasiparticle decomposition of low-lying states Rapid thermalization

q!limit of Kadano -Baym equations G > (t,t 2 )= i 2 apple + q g(t,t 2 )+... t2 g(t,t g(t,t 2 )=2 +2 Z t2 Z t Z t dt 3 J (t )J (t 3 )e g(t,t 3 ) dt 3 J p (t )J p (t 3 )e pg(t,t 3 ) dt 3 J (t 3 )J (t 2 )e g(t 3,t 2 ) dt 3 J p (t 3 )J p (t 2 )e pg(t 3,t 2 ) Z t Z t2 Z t dt 3 J (t )J (t 3 ) he i g(t,t 3 ) + e g(t 3,t ) Z t2 J 2 (t) =qj 2 (t)2 q, J 2 p (t) =qj 2 p (t)2 pq dt 3 J p (t )J p (t 3 ) he i pg(t,t 3 ) + e pg(t 3,t ) dt 3 J (t 3 )J (t 2 ) he i g(t 3,t 2 ) + e g(t 2,t 3 ) dt 3 J p (t 3 )J p (t 2 ) he i pg(t 3,t 2 ) + e pg(t 2,t 3 ) These non-linear, partial, integro-differential equations are exactly solvable!

q!limit of Kadano -Baym equations From a derivative of the Kadano -Baym equations, we 2 2 g(t,t 2 )=2J (t )J (t 2 )e g(t,t 2 ) +2J p (t )J p (t 2 )e pg(t,t 2 ). For t > 0 and t 2 > 0, this is the two-dimensional Liouville equation. The most general solution is of the form apple h 0 g(t,t 2 )=ln (t )h 0 2(t 2 ) J 2 (h (t ) h 2 (t 2 )) 2. A remarkable and significant feature of this expression is that it is exactly invariant under SL(2,C) transformations h (t)! ah (t)+b ch (t)+d, where =, 2 and a, b, c, d are arbitrary complex numbers.

q!limit of Kadano -Baym equations Substituting back into the Kadano -Baym equations, we find that for generic initial conditions in the regime t < 0 and t 2 < 0, the solutions for h (t ) and h 2 (t 2 ) at t > 0 and t 2 > 0 can be written as h (t) = aei e t + b ce i e t + d, h 2 (t) = ae i e t + b ce i e t + d. The complex constants a, b, c, d, and the real constants, are determined by the initial conditions in the t < 0 and t 2 < 0 quadrant of the t -t 2 plane. Substituting back into the SL(2,C) invariant Green s function, we obtain g(t,t 2 )=ln apple 2 4J 2 sinh 2 ( (t t 2 )/2+i ), =2J sin( ), which is (as expected) independent of a, b, c, d. The surprising feature is that depends only upon t = t t 2, and is independent of T =(t + t 2 )/2.

q!limit of Kadano -Baym equations Indeed, from the KMS condition, we find g describes a state in thermal equilibrium at an inverse temperature f = 2( 2 ). As T f! 0,! 0, and =2 T f, the maximal chaos rate. The system is thermal at t =0 + Actually, this may be a pre-thermal state (pointed out by Aavishkar Patel). The next correction G > (t,t 2 )= i apple + 2 q g(t,t 2 )+ q 2 g 2(t,t 2 )... may lead to a g 2 which relaxes at a rate T f.

q!limit of Kadano -Baym equations This result has a remarkable connection to the Schwarzian action. Consider the Euler-Lagrange equation of motion of a Lagrangian, L, which is the Schwarzian of h(t) The equation of motion is L[h(t)] = h000 (t) h 0 (t) 3 2 h 00 (t) h 0 (t) 2. This is exactly solved by [h 0 (t)] 2 h 0000 (t)+3[h 00 (t)] 3 4h 0 (t)h 00 (t)h 000 (t) =0. h(t) = ae t + b ce t + d.

Quantum chaos: We examined chaos and transport in a wide-class of holographic fixed points. In general, chaos and transport can be extracted from the fixed point solution, while the AdS 2 geometries (and SYK models) required consideration of the leading irrelevant operator. For the holographic fixed points, we find ~ L = 2 k B T v B T /z D T = z 2z 2 v2 B L, where z is the dynamic critical exponent. There is no general relation to chaos for other transport co-e cients. M. Blake, R. A. Davison, and S. Sachdev, arxiv

Quantum chaos: We define the chaos parameters by D {c(x, t),c (0, 0)} 2E exp L t x v B and the thermal di usivity close to local equilibrium by Then we find the = D T r 2 T. D T = Cv 2 B L where C is a numerical constant of order unity, independent of shortdistance details. Quantum chaos is intimately linked to the loss of phase coherence from electron-electron interactions. As the time derivative of the local phase is determined by the local energy, phase fluctuations and chaos are linked to interaction-induced energy fluctuations, and hence thermal di usivity. M.
