About IIST: At IIST we have students from BTech, MTech and PhD as members and working together. We are all driven by our own enthusiasm and interests. We are all together trying to explore the future and career opportunities under the guidance of Dr. K. Rakesh Kumar Singh and of course mutual guidance among the student members.
Our Lab: Adaptive Optics Lab at IIST
Undergrad student activities in lab: Demonstrating Optical Rotation and Birefringence On the eve of IIST s technical festival, Conscientia 2014, we demonstrated simple and colourful demonstration of ability of optically active solutions to rotate polarization of light using a popular demonstration of using concentrated sucrose solution and polarized white light to see spiral bands of colours in the solution. Demonstrating colour spirals due to optical rotation coupled with Rayleigh scattering when polarized white light is passed through concentrated sucrose solution which is optically active. Demonstrating Rayleigh Scattering in Dettol solution.
Lectures : Prof.YangKuen Park s talk on Scattering Superlens: sub-wavelength light focusing and imaging via wave-front shaping in complex media. August 20 th 2014
Prof.Bosanta R. Boruah from IIT Guwahati gave a talk on Breaking the Diffraction Barrier in November 2013 Dr.Maruthi M. Brundavanam from IIT,Kharagpur had given a talk on " Transverse polarization structure of an optical vortex beam in a birefringent crystal". 13 th December 2013 Talks by MTech, Optical Engg. students. Naimesh Patel (left) on "Role of OptomechanicalEngg.in payload design" Jyothish M (right) on "Photogrammetry" October 2013
Talk by Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh on Vortex beams at IIST,Trivandrum. 4 th September 2013 August 15 th 2013 at IIST: Talk on Questioning the Rainbow by C Sai Krishna, BTech, 3 rd yr, IIST Industrial/Technical Visit: Industrial Visit to IIA, ISAC and LEOS at Bangalore in January 2014
Outreach Activity: Dark enclosure to showing demonstrate birefringence Dark Enclosure for showing Optical Rotation Above: SPIE stall at our IIST s Technical Festival Conscientia-2014 on March 1 st Optical Rotation Experiment: inside the enclosure view. The above 2 photos show the color gradients/spirals in the glucose solution filled tube at different orientation of incident polarization. Inside the enclosure view of Birefringence demonstration of Cello Tape. Different thickness of cellophane gives different colors.
Above:A talk in the Women college, Birudhnagar, TamilNadu on Shaping of laser beams for applications ranging from biology to space science Above: Lab visit for School children as a science orientation programme. At Adaptive Optics lab, IIST
Research Activities: - Imaging through Turbulence and Scattering medium - Applications of Laser Speckles - Holography - Coherence and Polarization Optics - Optical Communication Future Plans Create good ambience for developing knowledge and skills in the field of Optics. Join hands with other SPIE chapters in India. Share knowledge in optics with other colleges and schools. Equip our Optics lab with sophisticated instruments and make it more conducive for research. Invite eminent personalities for getting to know about their research. Enhance participation in Conferences on Optics.
Expenditure: Optical elements for demonstration =Rs /- Expenses for Industrial Visit to IIA, ISAC and LEOS =Rs. 4803/- Expenses for outreach program and demonstrations =Rs 11900/- Visiting professor s travel expenses =Rs.3500/- Cumulative total of Expenditure till August 26 th 2014 =Rs /- Money Obtained from SPIE in September 2013 =Rs /-
