3 About IIST this year: This year our concentration was more towards learning the research trends in holography applications. Outreach activities were conducted at nearby undergraduate colleges highlighting International Year of Light and research opportunities going on in IIST adaptive optics lab. This led to increased collaborations and team work. Having conducted outreach activities at 3 colleges, we have got our outreach routine for demonstrations ready and are ready to demonstrate the same to other colleges. Also undergrad members worked together to apply for Outreach grant cycle 1, although we couldn t get selected. In this process we developed some team spirit in planning and this is going to serve as an experience for the next opportunity. There were talks highlighting Nobel prize 2014 by faculties of IIST. A student talk based on the topic related to a question that rose during discussions with our Advisor, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh. New research projects have started, some with interdisciplinary approach. This lead to increased exchange of knowledge and ideas among different disciplines. Also, new M.Tech Optical Engg. students batch joined our SPIE Chapter. And two professionals in the field of Image processing optics Mr. Rahul Waghmare and in the field of Experimental Mechanics Mr. Digendranath Swain have joined as members of our SPIE team this year.
4 Our Lab (highlight photos this year): Following photos show few of the activities that happened this year. Holography experiments with red and green laser Interesting pattern formed on a screen when red and green laser are passed through sucrose crystals due to refraction and TIR in randomly shaped crystal structure.
5 Optical rotation effect demonstrated based on selective scattering in direction perpendicular to polarization of laser beam (diode laser provided in spie activity kit) Designs obtained using multiple diffraction grating with varied orientations. Diffraction gratings (provided in spie activity kit) can be seen on the right bottom.

10 Nonlinear optical PT-symmetric systems: Cavity control and regularization of spectral singularity" Prof. S. Dutta Gupta, School of Physics, University of Hyderabad Student talk: Exploring phenomena by which colors manifest in nature It all started with a question on why peacock or even pigeon neck s feathers show glittering colors which vary in shades at different angular directions. And the question on why butterfly wing s colors are lost on just handling it s wings little carelessly with fingers. In this talk we discussed various mechanisms by which we see colors around us.
11 Butterfly image shows that actual color of pigment on the butterfly wing is grey and beautiful color patterns are visible only when illuminated by white light due to phenomena called iridescence. Demonstration of photoelasticity Demonstration of Flourescence: Green laser incident from right side. Water with Dettol (for scattering), scattering laser light without wavelength alteration. Whereas Rhodamine solution(left) scattering fluorescent green color which corresponds to lower energy electron de-excitation transition in rhodamine.
12 Research Activities: - Coherence and Polarization Optics - Imaging behind the random scattering medium - Quantitative phase contrast imaging through the random scattering media - Applications of Laser Speckles - Holography - Small Deformation Measurement using laser speckle - Optical Communication New R&D this year: - Controlled synthesis of coherence and polarization using intensity correlation and speckle holography technique by Mr Vinu R V - An MTech project on Single shot measurement of Jones matrix by Mr. Neeraj Kumar Soni - Physical Optics: Generation of network of helical phase structure in the partially coherent beam - An MTech project on 3D reconstruction of shape of phase object by Mr. Atul Somkuwar - Research in the field of ghost imaging by a PhD student, Ms.Darshika Singh has started - An optical metrology instrument for measuring small deformation using laser speckle is in the process of development. Initial work in this direction is started as part of B.Tech project by Mr. Sai Krishna and we are looking forward to develop it in the near future.
13 - Research on Secure communication using quantum optics by Mr. Ameen Yasir Next Plans - This year, we saw technical expertise increasing among the members of our SPIE chapter and also with increased alumni members, we are looking forward to improve more professional advices to the chapter members. - With increased collaborations with other research teams, we are looking forward to wide variety of research topics and knowledge and skill sharing among the research team members. - We have also started giving impetus to interdisciplinary work this year. Collaboration with Nano-chemistry lab and Mechanical engineering dept. of IIST have already started. Collaborations have led to exchange and development of new ideas. This is expected to give a good push to research of optics and developing new applications at IIST.
