Absorption spectroscopy: Principle, limitation and application The workshop was inaugurated according to the traditional custom of Visva-Bharati. The welcome address was delivered by Prof. P. Chowdhury, Head, Department of Chemistry, Visva Bharati in which he gave a brief description of this department and its recent achievements. In the introductory speech, Prof. B.C. Ranu, the convener of the workshop explained the necessity of this type of lecture workshop in the present day scenario of rapid advancement of scientific knowledge and he said that teaching and research are the complementary to each other and these two things should go side by side. Prof. V. C. Joy, Principal, Siksha Bhavana (Institute of Science), Visva Bharati said Chemistry is the subject which is very relevant in all most all arena of our day to day life from the ancient time to this modern era and with advancement of science, several new branches of chemistry emerged e.g. Green Chemistry, Nanochemistry and at the same time Chemistry has a great role in the protection of environment to the conservation of our natural resources which is highly necessary to offer a safe environment to our future generation and hence, our knowledge in Chemistry should be updated accordingly and this type of
3 workshop served this purpose and he thanked the convener and Science Academies for selecting Department of Chemistry as the venue for this workshop. In his speech, Prof. S. Datta, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Visva Bharati pointed out that being an interdisciplinary subject, this type of workshop will also be immensely helpful for the teachers, researchers and students of other subjects e.g. biology and physics. The presidential address was delivered by Prof.S. Mandal in which he gave a very informative portrayal of the foundation of Chemistry teaching and research in India. In the inaugural address, Prof. S. Dattagupta, Vice Chancellor, Visva Bharati briefly explained the role of Sir P. C. Ray as the founder of modern research and teaching in Chemistry in India. He also explained the views of Rabindranath Tagore, the founder of Visva Bharati regarding necessity of the science education in India. The inaugural session ended with the vote of thanks of Dr. A. Majee, the coordinator of the workshop. The first scientific session of Day-1 was stared with the lecture of Prof. S. Dattagupta, Vice Chancellor, Visva Bharati. The tile of his talk was "Two-Hundred (...and More) Years of Diffusion". In his very lucid lecture, he explained fundamentals of physical and stochastic diffusions and their role/importance in controlling various biological, chemical and physical phenomena. It was not only informative to the young students but equally appealing to the faculties and advanced researchers. In the second session, Prof. B. C. Ranu, IACS, Jadavpur delivered his talk on Green Catalysis and Green Tools in Organic Synthesis. He lucidly explained the role of Green Chemistry in the development of an efficient, industrially and environmentally acceptable catalysts which is very relevant towards the sustainability and economic growth of a country like India. The audiences had enjoyed this great opportunity to know about his group s advanced research activities on benign metal catalyzed C-C and carbon-heteroatom bond formation, C-H functionalization via C-H activation and visible light mediated metal-free transformations. The speaker of the third scientific session of Day-1 was Dr. B. C. Gupta, Department of Physics, Visva Bharati. The title of his talk was Geometrical, electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties of nanostructures. In his talk, he discussed the structural, electrical, possible magnetic properties and catalytic properties of various nanostructures (free standing of nanowires and nanotubes). With this the scientific sessions of Day-1 ended. The scientific sessions of Day-2 began with the talk of Prof. S. Goswami, Department of Inorganic Chemistry, IACS, Jadavpur on Electron Transfer Phenomena in Transition Metal
4 Complexes of Azo-Aromatic Ligands. In his talk, he discussed on some very recent advancements on synthesis, the redox properties [especially unusual redox activities e.g. Redox Induced Electron transfer (RIET)] of a selection of transition metal complexes of azo-anion radical ligands and their chemical and physical application potentials. After tea break, the second scientific session started with the lecture of Prof. A. R. Das, Department of chemistry, University of Calcutta. The title of his talk was Nanocatalyst: Application to organic synthesis. He discussed on the synthesis and characterization of novel catalytic materials having nano domain structural features and characteristics of homogenenous and heterogeneous catalysts and their usefulness in various organic reactions. This was followed by the talk of Dr. S. Sinha, Department of Organic Chemistry, IACS, Jadavpur and the title of his talk was Ibogaine-Analogue as Antinociceptive Agents for Pain Relief: Possible Substitute of Morphine. In his presentation, he highlighted the dual opioid agonistic properties of simple analogues of iboga-alkaloids which are isoquinuclidine derivatives having antinociceptive activity. He also said such benzofuran-isoquinuclidine based pharmacophores may lead to the development of suitable substitute of morphine (but having its no bad side effects) in the treatment of pain. This two day lecture workshop ended with the talk of Prof. N. Guchchait of Department of Chemistry, University of Calcutta. The title of his very informative talk was Absorption spectroscopy: Principle, limitation and application. In the concluding session, participants gave their important feedbacks and suggestions. The session ended with the concluding remarks made by Prof. A. K. Das, Department of Chemistry, Visva Bharati. The students, faculty members and non-academic staffs work very hard to make this lecture workshop a highly successful academic event. Dr. Adinath Majee Associate Professor Coordinator Department of Chemistry Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan
