A Degree In Chemistry
Why chemistry? It is the central science Chemists contribute a lot to our quality of life New drugs Detecting disease Nanotechnology Batteries New materials Food production CHEMISTRY Solar energy Nuclear energy Understanding life Clean water Environmental monitoring
Why chemistry? It improves our quality of life Healthcare medicines are developed by organic chemists Saxagliptin ( Onglyza ): New drug to treat diabetes Clean energy light-absorbing materials for solar cells (electricity from sunshine)
Why chemistry? It helps to tackle future problems New materials for nanotechnology a wire that is one molecule thick Made in Sheffield Clean the air as you walk! TiO 2 nanoparticles impregnated into catalytic clothing will use sunlight to destroy pollutants in the air
Why chemistry? Excellent career prospects Chemistry provides many transferable skills that are highly valued by employers: data analysis problem solving presentation skills logical thinking report writing team working Over 90% of our recent graduates go onto further studies or have secured employment in a wide range of areas 2015 destination data Chemical industry Science R&D Financial services Teaching Healthcare sector Media and publishing Management / business Sales and retail and more
Why chemistry? Excellent career prospects Remember: Chemistry graduates lifetime earnings are on average 30% greater than non-graduates 12% higher than graduates in other disciplines Over 90% of our recent graduates go onto further studies or have secured employment in a wide range of areas 2015 destination data Chemical industry Science R&D Financial services Teaching Healthcare sector Media and publishing Management / business Sales and retail and more
Why this department? A highly ranked department in a highly ranked university. The department has been in the Top 10 of The Times league table for the past 5 years, the university is in The World Top 100 Joint first in the UK Russell Group for student satisfaction in 2015 National Student Survey Excellent interactions between staff and students High quality teaching and laboratory facilities
Why this department? 38 academic staff, including internationally leading researchers and 6 university teaching specialists. Students will be taught by world-leading researchers from the start All of our staff teach at every level of the course. Many of our staff have won teaching awards or written popular textbooks.
Why this department? World Class facilities
Research at Sheffield 98% of our research is rated as world-class or internationally excellent (2014 Research Excellence Framework). Three Nobel Prize winners have worked or trained in the Department. Around 140 PhD students and 30 postdoctoral researchers. Research expertise in Chemical Biology, Polymers, Materials, Surface Chemistry, Spectroscopy, Theoretical Chemistry and Synthetic Chemistry
Chemistry degree courses All in Sheffield: BSc (3 years) or MChem / MPhys (4 years) Chemistry - BSc (F100) and MChem (F105) Chemistry with Biological and Medicinal Chemistry - MChem (C720) Chemical Physics - MPhys (F335) Year 3 away from Sheffield all MChem (4 years) Chemistry with Study in Europe (F107) Chemistry with Study in Australasia (F108) Chemistry with Study in America (F109) Chemistry with Study in Industry (F106) All accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry
The MChem degree program Four years including in the final year A laboratory research project for 50% of year 4 advanced lectures at the cutting edge of the subject taught by research leaders Transferable graduate-level skills learned during research project are highly valued by employers: independence, problem solving, data analysis, presentation skills Because of the greater career opportunities we recommend that you enrol for the MChem unless you are sure that a BSc is appropriate Essential for progression to PhD (very popular option!) Transfer from MChem to BSc is possible
The BSc degree program The BSc is a three year programme, that is identical to the first three years of the MChem course It is designed for those who require a recognised degree qualification in science and is ideal preparation for a career in many fields (Teaching; Nursing; Accountancy; Management; Sales and Marketing ) The BSc degree enables entry to a wide range of MSc graduate programmes Transfer from BSc to MChem programmes is possible subject to performance
Our approach Independent learner Problem solving Numeracy Teamwork Communication Literacy Independent researcher Data analysis
Teaching methods 1-hour tutorial per week Five one-hour lectures of core chemistry per week One 5-hour laboratory practical class per week Learning and lab resource packs for all new students, including: Personal copies of textbooks Laboratory manuals Tutorial workbooks Lab coat Safety glasses
Course content Year 1 builds on high school principles and concepts Inorganic Organic Physical Options (eg maths, physics, Laboratory biology, languages) Year 2 core disciplines Inorganic Organic Physical Laboratory Year 3 developments at forefront of chemistry Inorganic Organic Physical Projects Year 4 specialist areas of chemistry Options, including medicinal chemistry, nanochemistry, astrochemistry & smart polymers More specialised degrees will vary in structure Research project
Within the department: Help and support All students have a personal tutor whom they meet weekly for both academic support and to provide help with any other problems We provide regular careers advice / training from specialist consultants during the degree program From the wider university: English Language and maths support for anyone who needs it Extensive pastoral care: Health service; Chaplaincy; Counselling service; Studying / exam guidance
What our students say a great department with interesting and informative lectures a peer group and academics that support you through your studies with tutorials, workshops and regular help sessions an enjoyable and interesting place of learning. Two recent BSc graduates with Prof. Beining Chen May (left) is doing an MSc in Sheffield. Janice (centre) has returned to China to become a chemistry teacher
