REPORT ON SCIENCE ACADEMIES LECTURE WORKSHOP ON SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES AND APPLICATIONS TO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE ELUCIDATION 5 TH & 6 TH DECEMBER 2014 SPONSORED & SUPPORTED BY Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi Indian National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad Organized by DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY NIRMALA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, COIMBATORE
The Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, established in 1934, aims at promoting the progress and upholding the cause of science in pure and applied branches. The major activities include publication of scientific journals and special volumes, recognition of scientific talent and improvement of science education. The role of the academy is to organize - s ymposia, public lectures, discussion meetings, refresher courses and lecture workshops jointly with Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, Indian National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad in Institutions / Universities /Colleges throughout our country. Aim of the Workshop To e n h a n c e t h e k n o w l e d g e of the students, teachers and the research scholars on the most versatile topic Spectroscopic techniques and applications to chemical structure elucidation and to motivate more students into higher studies and research in science Participants In addition to about 125 of our college students, 145 students & 25 staff members from various colleges and universities like, Avinashilingam University, P.S.G. College of Arts and Science, Hindustan College of Arts and Science, SRMV College of Arts and Science, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, CBM College, Government Arts College, Coimbatore, Dr. NGP College of Arts and Science, NGM College Pollachi, Government Arts College, Udumalpet, LRG Govt Arts College forwomen, Tirupur, School of Chemistry Bharathiar University, Karpagam University, Sri Narayna Guru
College, Dept. of Physics, Vasavi College, Erode registered and participated in the Lecture Workshop Inaugural Session The programme started at 9.00 am with prayer and lighting of lamp, followed b y a warm welco me by the coordinator of the Lecture Workshop, Dr. V. G. Vasudha, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry, Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Sr. Dona Grace Jeyaseely, Principal, Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore who highlighted the importance of spectroscopy and its applications. She thanked the Academy for its generous support for organizing the workshop. Dr. V. Subramanian, Senior Principal Scientist, Chemical Laboratory, Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai, explained about the theme of Lecture workshop. Professor S. Umapathy, in his inaugural address, mentioned the various programmes conducted by the science academies to nurture science. He gave a brief
history about Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore and its association with other academies. He clearly explained the role of science academies in promoting strong science platform in colleges by conducting various programmes like Summer Research Fellowships for students and faculties to do advanced research, Refresher Courses for faculties on contemporary topics, Lecture Workshops to listen and interact with the scientific fellows to improve their career. He also mentioned about the journals that are published by the science academies. The first session for the day was chaired by, Dr. E. Arunan, Department of, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His talk was on- Why do atoms/molecules absorb/emit radiation? In Session I V, he described the application of Molecular Beam Microwave Spectroscopy. All the participants were inspired and motivated by his talk. He explained the identification of weak forces in molecules using supersonic microwave spectroscopy. D r. S. Umapathy, Professor,, Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru, chaired the II Session. He explained the fundamentals and applications of Laser Spectroscopy under the title of Laser Spectroscopy I. It was highly informative and effective. In the III session Dr. D. Jayaprakash, ITC LSTC, Bangalore, spoke about the applications of spectroscopic techniques to scientific research problems in industry. It was highly interesting, interactive and inspirational. He explained the identification of metal bound to proteins and discovery of new actives for skin care application using spectroscopic techniques.
Day 2 started with the Session V by Dr. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, It was highly interactive. In Session VI Dr. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, continue to describe the theoretical aspects of molecular, rotational torsional spectra and vibrational spectroscopy. He also gave a nutshell view about the role of NPTEL in higher education learning convenience anytime, anywhere. Session VII was chaired by Prof. S. Umapathy who in his topic Laser spectroscopy II, explained the fundamental aspects and applications of the ultrafast dynamics simulated Raman spectroscopy in medical and other fields. Session VIII and IX were chaired by Dr. V. Subramanian, Senior Principal Scientist, Chemical Laboratory, Central Leather Research Institute. He explained the prediction of vibrational spectra of various small molecules using computational chemistry methods. It was highly informative.
This was followed by the Feedback Session, where the students and staff from other college expressed their views about the Lecture Workshop. A brief account of the feed back: Hospitality and organization of the host institution were good Questionnaire on problems in spectroscopy could be discussed More applications of spectroscopy could be covered More such lecture workshops would be welcome In the Valedictory Session Prof. V. Subramanian gave a brief report of all the sessions. He advised the students to make the best use of the opportunities available in the present days and appreciated the efforts of the organizers for the successful conduct of the workshop. Programme came to an end with the vote of thanks by the coordinator of the workshop Dr.V.G.Vasudha. All the invited speakers gave very interesting lectures touching upon the fundamentals leading to the current day developments. All the sessions were interactive and the participants were motivated. As a whole, this two day lecture workshop was an eye opener to many students for planning their career.
