3 BUILDING F O R M Q ~ \ ^ S&R A R C H I T E C T U R A L D E S C R I P T I O N [ x ] see continuation sheet Describe architectural features Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community If its traditional construction date is correct, this is one of several houses of the C o l o n i a l and F e d e r a l periods i n Southborough which were later updated with G r e e k R e v i v a l details It is a 2 1/2-story, two-room-deep, side-gabled building with a five-bay facade and two-bay gable ends V e r y s i m i l ar i n p r o p o r t i on and configuration to its near neighbor at 79 T u r n p i k e R o a d ( F o r m #236), it retains more original material i n spite of its twentieth-century vinyl siding W h i l e the casings of the windows have been lost or covered, most of the rest of the G r e e k R e v i v a l architectural detailing remains T h e cornice is molde d and boxed, w i t h returns and a roof projection on the gable ends, and has a fully-developed frieze with bed m o l d i n g and architrave across the facade T h e house corners are trimmed with wide recessed-paneled pilasters with m o l d e d capitals T h e center entry continues the vocabulary of the house entablature, with the same type o f pilasters, frieze, and a molded, projecting cornice T h e door is a glass-and-panel V i c t o r i a n type w i t h two long round-headed lights and applied moldings, and is flanked by fivepane, full-length sidelights T h e 2-over-2-sash windows w o u l d probably have been installed sometime i n the second half of the nineteenth century T h e i r vinyl or a l u m i n u m shutters date to the m i d - or late-twentieth century T w i n chimneys rise from the roof ridge, and a small hiproofed porch wraps around the rear northeast corner of the house T h e porc h is supported on paneled square posts, and has both a square-doweled balustrade and frieze screen T h e porch w o u l d have been added sometime after 1898, when a long el l o r wing, with attached barn, is still shown extending f r o m the northeast corner of the house (Cont) H I S T O R I C A L N A R R A T I V E [ x ] see continuation sheet Explain history of the building Explain its associations with local (or state) history Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the ownersioccupants played within the community A l t h o u g h tradition places the date of this house to 1802, the Boston & Worcester T u r n p i k e o n which it fronts was not built until a few years later T h e proportions of the building indicate that it c o u l d possibly have been constructed as early as ; if that was the case, then its handsome G r e e k R e v i v a l details would represent an updating probably of the 1830s T h e earliest k n o w n owner of the building was Isaac S m i t h H e m a r r i e d M a r y R i c h a r d s o n i n 1815, and i f it was he w h o built the house, that would probably place its construction date to that time or later B y 1824 he was a Lieutenant i n the Southborough m i l i t i a ; he later saw action as a C a p t a i n i n the U S - M e x i c a n W a r i n 1847, when several Southborough m i l i t i a members were called up to fight i n the M e x i c a n campaign H e appears to have lived here for most of the rest of his life, and is still shown as the owner i n 1870, at which time he owned the house, barn, a carriagehouse/woodshed, and part interest i n a wheelwright shop that may have stood on the property B y 1898 the owner was one of the many members of the Newton family w h o had owned property, operated stores and manufacturing shops, and lived along the T u r n p i k e i n Fayville over m u c h of the nineteenth century T h e map of that year shows the owner as SB Newton T h i s was apparently S u l l i v a n B a l l Newton, who died i n 1907 at the age of seventy (Cont) B I B L I O G R A P H Y and/or R E F E R E N C E S [ ] see continuation sheet M a p s and Atlases: 1831; 1857: I Smith; 1870: I Smith; 1898: SB N e w t o n N o b l e, R i c h a r d Fences of Stone: a History of Southborough, M A Portsmouth, N H : R a n d a l l, 1990 Southborough M i l i t i a : Records of M i l i t i a Officers, 1824 T o w n of Southborough: V i t a l Records; Assessor's Reports, various dates [ ] Peter R e c o m m e n d e d for listing i n the N a t i o n a l Register of H i s t o r i c Places If checked, a completednational Register Criteria Statement form is attached
