6 0 T'^ l^oi, TIE OLD ELZI^R KOt^ Sometiine prior to 1890, Mr. P. 0. Elzner built a wood frame house on land bordering the Colorado River that he had purchased October 10, This structure consisted of the rooms now identified as the entrance foyer, parlor, front bedroom, middle bedroom and the kitchen. The present solarium was a porch originally. The West back bedroom and bathroom was later added by Mr. Elzner's son who also enclosed the open porch and built the library room. The house is historically classified as a transition. It was build during a period when builders were discarding the Greek Revival classical motiffs and attempting to explore the freedom of Victorian from the East. Even though built before 1890, heavily classical in plan and molding motiffs, the Victorian is easily recognized by the elongated double-hung windows, the "two-over-two" lights which stressed verticallty and the steamboat "gingerbread" placed upon the entry porch. The hall floors, like that throughout the house are three layers thick due to the practice of simply covering an old floor when a new floor was needed. These floors are made of edge grain pine milled in a Bastrop mill. One of the most talked about features of the house is the front door. It is made of handworked wood and cut class through which various shades of blue, amber and white lights bathe the entrance foyer. The sloping site on which the house is built posed a problem for foundation work. This was solved when large cedar tree trunks cut at differing lengths were used as piers. There's no doubt that Mr. P. 0. Elzner envisioned future generations who would also live in his sturdily built house. As an added bonus, the house which he built succeeded in recording the times in which he lived. His creation accomodated three generations of Elzner's. Du Bois bought the property from 7 Mrs. Bruno Elzner, Jr. They found the Old Elzner Home had not been defaced, f despite all the intervening years. In the restoration work, they dedicatedi their efforts to faithfully keeping the original structure intact. < ^"""^ Ihe Oil Bois' added two additional bathrooms. A specially milled siding and trim matches the original.
