3 NPS Fom * (g.^) OMB Appmml Na United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Piaces Continuation Sheet Section number 7 Page 1 7. Description The Santa Fe Railway Freight Depot is a 2-story, brick building with 1-story loading dock located along the original Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company tracks on the western edge of downtown Brenham. It reflects the fimctional or utilitarian architecture of railroad buildings and retains its architectural integrity. The Santa Fe Railway Freight Depot is a two-part, brick building arranged in an elongated rectangular plan on a north-south axis. It rests on a stuccoed brick foundation with a flat built-up roof. South Austin Street runs along the eastem side of the building; a railroad spur along the westem side. No formal vegetation surrounds the property. The 2-story southernmost section serves as the headquarters and office. Raised letters found below the stone parapet on the south facade read "Santa Fe Freight Depot." An even fenestration of l / l double-hung wooden windows with stone sills highlights each floor of each facade. A single wooden door behind a stairway parapet provides access to the business office on the south facade. The 1-story northernmost section serves as the loading area with frame docks projecting to the east. Large, wooden freight doors punctuate the east and west facades with the eastern ones providing direct access from trucks to the storage area and the western ones providing the same to and from the rail cars on the spur. The property is currently privately owned and vacant. It is, however, in fair condition and retains its architectural integrity in spite of a few alterations.
4 NPS form 10-aOO-m OMB Appmml Na is-sai United States Department of the Interior National Pari< Sen/ice National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section number a Page i 8. Significance The Santa Fe Freight Depot (c.1925) is eligible under Criterion A and significant in the area of transportation for its role in linking the Brenham area to a broader market for local goods. It is also eligible under Criterion C and significant for representing a functional approach to architecture by providing simple office space and spacious loading areas. The Santa Fe Depot is associated with the local context "Community Development and Regional Expansion, " and is one of two properties remaining with an association to the railroads. Criterion A: Transportation Brenham served as the junction of two major railroad lines, the Houston and Texas Central Railway (H&TC) and the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railway (GC&SF). The two lines intersected southwest of the central business district in the 1880s thereby influencing the development of the town. They shared a common passenger depot nearby, now demolished. (See context statement for more discussion.) Criterion C: Architecture The Santa Fe Freight Depot is a functional and utilitarian form of architecture designed to accommodate frequent usage with minimal obstruction. Few embellishments adorn the facade. Broad and open loading spaces were built to allow goods to be unloaded from trains on the west side and then temporarily stored before being loaded onto trucks on the east side and delivered. Office and administrative spaces were limited but conveniently located so that employees could oversee loading activities and handle paperwork. This property is almost identical to the freight depot of the competing railway, Houston and Texas Central (later Southern Pacific, whose line is now abandoned), located at 306 South Market. It is unusual for this to have occurred in such a close geographic area. Moreover, these are the only properties remaining that represent the railroad and thus this mode of transportation.
