1 A SWAP gate for quits Juan Carlos Garcia-Escartin an Pero Chamorro-Posaa Universia e Vallaoli, Dpto. Teoría e la Señal e Ing. Telemática, Paseo Belén n o 15, Vallaoli, Spain (Date: April 18, 2013) We present a quantum SWAP gate vali for quantum systems of an arbitrary imension. The gate generalizes the CNOT implementation of the SWAP gate for qubits an keeps its most important properties, like symmetry an simplicity. We only use three copies of the same controlle quit gate. This gate can be built with two stanar higher-imensional operations, the Quantum Fourier Transform an the -imensional version of the CZ gate. arxiv: v1 [quant-ph] 17 Apr 2013 I. INTRODUCTION Quantum information protocols an quantum algorithms are usually esigne for a group of two level quantum systems (qubits). With n qubits, we can access Hilbert spaces of imension = 2 n. However, in some occasions it is a goo iea to look into systems with an arbitrary imension which is not necessarily a power of two. Quantum information units with possible states are calle quits. The basic quantum operations performe by the quantum gates of the stanar toolbox are not always easy to generalize to the quit setting. In many cases, there is more than one possible generalization, each preserving some of the features of the original qubit gate. We present an implementation for a SWAP gate which interchanges two quits. For two -imensional states, φ an ψ, the SWAP gate will act as: The gate is compose of three equal controlle gates. SWAP φ ψ = ψ φ. (1) II. QUBIT SWAP GATES An elegant way to implement the SWAP operation for qubits is the CNOT circuit shown in Figure 1. The CNOT, or CX, gate is a controlle NOT operation. It has a control qubit, represente as a black ot, an a target qubit, represente with the XOR symbol. If the control qubit is in state 1, the target qubit changes its value from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0. The quantum gate operation can be escribe as The XOR operation is both moulo 2 aition an subtraction. CNOT x y = x x y. (2) φ ψ ψ φ FIG. 1: CNOT swapping circuit. This SWAP implementation concatenates three CNOT gates to perform a classical XOR swapping operation in three steps x y CNOT2,1 x y y, (3) x y y CNOT1,2 x y y x y = x y x, (4) Electronic aress: juagar@tel.uva.es
2 2 x y x CNOT2,1 x y x x = y x. (5) Here, CNOT i,j is a CNOT gate controlle by qubit i an with qubit j as target. The evolution we have escribe is vali for input states x an y which are 0 or 1, but general qubit states φ an ψ can be written as a superposition of these 0 an 1 states. All the terms in the superposition are swappe an so are the input general states. The resulting SWAP circuit works for arbitrary φ ψ inputs. An input ψ φ will also be swappe. Due to this symmetry of operation, the alternative reflecte circuit of Figure 2 is also a SWAP gate. φ ψ ψ φ FIG. 2: Alternative configuration for the CNOT swapping circuit. III. THE QUDIT SWAP GATE There are many quit generalizations of the CNOT operation. Some of them help to buil partial swapping circuits [1], but, in general, they o not offer a complete SWAP gate unless combine with aitional gates [2, 3]. We propose a new quit SWAP gate with a symmetric configuration that generalizes the circuits of Figures 1 an 2. The basic builing block is what we call the C X gate, an alternativegeneralizationof the CNOT gate which is particularly useful for the SWAP operation. The C X gate an the resulting SWAP circuit will be compare to other generalizations in Section IV. A. The C X gate We efine a gate C X acting on quits x an y from the basis { 0, 1,..., } so that C X x y = x x y. (6) x y enotes a state i in the range i = 0,..., with i = x y mo. All the aition an subtraction operations in this paper are consiere to be moulo. When = 2, the C X gate performs a CNOT operation. B. The quit SWAP gate φ C X C X ψ ψ C X φ FIG. 3: Quit swapping circuit. The SWAP gate of Figure 1 can be extene to quit inputs using three C X gates (Figure 3). If C X i,j is a C X gate where the control is quit i an the target quit j, the evolution through the quit SWAP gate is x y C X 2,1 x y y, (7) x y y C X 1,2 x y x+y y = x y x, (8) x y x C X 2,1 x+x+y x = y x. (9)
3 3 The final state is a swappe version of the inputs. Any possible quit from the input pair is a superposition of states from { 0, 1,..., }. Therefore, the gate acts as a SWAP for arbitrary input quits. We can also give an alternative circuit inverting the orer of the inputs. As the gate is vali for arbitrary inputs, the upsie-own circuit of Figure 4 must also perform the SWAP operation. φ C X ψ ψ C X C X φ FIG. 4: Alternative configuration for the quit swapping circuit. C. Decomposition of the C X gate in elementary blocks The C X gate can be ecompose into three elementary quit gates, two Quantum Fourier Transform operations, QFT, an the quit generalization of the CZ gate, CZ. The Quantum Fourier Transform is the quantum version of the Discrete Fourier Transform. It takes any quit state x into a uniform superposition QFT x = 1 e i2πxk k. (10) The CZ gate is a selective phase shift. A control quit etermines the phase shift of the target. Its effect on two input quits is We also consier its inverse CZ x y = e i2πxy x y. (11) CZ x y = e i2πxy x y. (12) Figure 5 shows the ecomposition of the C X gate in terms of these primitives. We apply a QFT on the target (operation QFT 2 ), then apply a CZ gate an perform a secon QFT 2. x x y QFT CZ QFT x y FIG. 5: Decomposition of the C X gate. The total evolution is the esire C X operation, as x y QFT 2 1 CZ 1 QFT 2 1 l=0 The last step comes from noticing the geometric sum e i2πky x k (13) e i2πky e i2πxk x k = 1 e i2πk(x+y) x k (14) e i 2πk(x+y) e i2πkl x l = x x y. (15) ) k (e i2π(x+y+l) = δ(x+y +l mo ). (16)
4 4 We can see the C X gate is its own inverse. If we apply twice the operation C X x y = x x y, we get C X C X x y = C X x x y = x x ( x y) = x y. (17) All quantum gates are unitary operations. If C X is its own inverse, then C X = C X. The ecomposition C X = (QFT 2 CZ QFT 2 ) = IQFT 2 CZ IQFT 2 of Figure 6 is also a vali implementation of C X. x x y IQFT CZ IQFT x y FIG. 6: Alternative ecomposition of the C X gate. Now the elementary gates that give C X are two inverse Quantum Fourier Transforms (IQFT = QFT ) an a CZ gate in the mile. IV. DISCUSSION We have presente an implementation of the SWAP gate vali for states of any arbitrary imension. The gate preserves some nice properties of the CNOT ecomposition of the qubit SWAP. Previous quit SWAP gate proposals use a ifferent generalization of the CNOT gate. The most extene alternative is the CX gate that transforms states accoring to CX x y = x x+y, (18) with a moulo aition. For qubits, moulo 2 aition an subtraction are the same operation. For quits, we nee a ifferent operation for the inverse. The gate CX is given by CX x y = x y x, (19) with a moular subtraction. Combining CX an CX gates, we can give partial SWAP circuits if we know one of the input states. For instance, we can take an input φ 0 into 0 φ [1]. However, these gates are not enough to complete a quit SWAP gate for any value of [4, 5]. The resulting circuits nee to be complete with the operation which offers the moulo complement of the input. X x = x = x (20) φ CX CX ψ ψ CX X φ φ CX CX X ψ ψ CX φ φ X CX X ψ ψ X CX CX φ FIG. 7: Quit SWAP circuits with the CX, CX an X gates. The three gates, CX, CX an X, appear in ifferent implementations of the quit SWAP gate [2, 3]. Figure 7 shows some possible circuits. These gates can be irectly aapte to prouce a quantum SWAP gate for continuous variables [3, 6]. We can similarly give a continuous C X gate. The quit SWAP circuit presente in this paper offers a new, simple alternative with only one type of gate. The C X gate we have escribe is its own inverse an can be ecompose into stanar quit gates.
