ON THE VOLUME BOUND IN THE DVORETZKY ROGERS LEMMA FERENC FODOR, MÁRTON NASZÓDI, AND TAMÁS ZARNÓCZ arxiv: v1 [math.mg] 10 Apr 2018 Abstract. The classical Dvoretzky Rogers lemma provies a eterministic algorithm by which, from any set of isotropic vectors in Eucliean -space, one can select a subset of vectors whose eterminant is not too small. Pivovarov (2010), on the other han, etermine the expectation of the square of the volume of parallelotopes spanne by inepenent ranom vectors in R, each one chosen accoring to an isotropic measure. We improve the lower boun on the maximal volume of such parallelotopes, with the help of an extension of Pivovarov s result to a class of more general probability measures. Our improvement is significant in the case when the support of the isotropic measure is small. By John s theorem, this case is relevant in the stuy of polytopes with few facets. 1. Introuction Given a set of isotropic vectors in Eucliean -space R (see efinition below), the Dvoretzky Rogers lemma states that one may select a subset of well sprea out vectors. As a consequence, the eterminant of these vectors is at least!/. This selection is eterministic: we start with an arbitrary element of the set, an then select more vectors one-by-one in a certain greey manner. Pivovarov [7, Lemma 3, p. 49], on the other han, chooses vectors ranomly an then computes the expectation of the square of the resulting eterminant. In this note, we exten Pivovarov s result to a wier class of measures, an apply this extension to obtain an improve lower boun on the maximum of the volume of parallelotopes spanne by vectors from the support of the measure; thus, we improve the volume boun in the Dvoretzky Rogers lemma. We enote the Eucliean scalar prouct by,, the inuce norm by. We use the usual notation B for the unit ball of R centere at the origin o, an S 1 for its bounary bb. We call a compact convex set K R with non-empty interior a convex boy. For etaile information on the properties of convex boies, we refer to the books by Gruber [4] an Schneier [8]. Let I be the ientity map on R. For u, v R, let u v : R R enote the tensor prouct of u an v, that is, (u v)(x) v, x u for any x R. Note that when u S 1 is a unit vector, u u is the orthogonal projection onto the linear subspace spanne by u. For two functions f(n), g(n), we use the notation f(n) g(n) (as n ) if lim n f(n)/g(n) 1. An isotropic measure is a probability measure µ on R with the following two properties. (1) x x µ(x) I, R an the center of mass of µ is at the origin, that is, (2) x µ(x) 0. R Pivovarov [7] prove the following statement about the expectation of the volume of ranom parallelotopes spanne by inepenent vectors selecte accoring to isotropic measures. Lemma 1 (Pivovarov [7], Lemma 3). Let x 1,..., x be inepenent ranom vectors istribute accoring to the isotropic measures µ 1,..., µ in R. Assume that x 1,..., x are linearly inepenent with probability 1. Then (3) E([et(x 1,..., x )] 2 )! Mathematics Subject Classification. 52A22,52B11,52A38,52A40. 2 We exten Lemma 1 in the following way, which allows us to apply it in the context of iscrete isotropic measures. Lemma 2. Let x 1,..., x be inepenent ranom vectors istribute accoring to the measures µ 1,..., µ in R satisfying (1). Assume that µ i ({0}) 0 for i1,...,. Then (3) hols. Our primary, geometric motivation in stuying isotropic measures is the following celebrate theorem of John [6], which we state in the refine form obtaine by Ball [1] (see also [2]). Theorem 1. Let K be a convex boy in R. Then there exists a unique ellipsoi of maximal volume containe in K. Moreover, this maximal volume ellipsoi is the -imensional unit ball B if an only if there exist vectors u 1,..., u m bk S 1 an (positive) real numbers c 1,..., c m > 0 such that m (4) c i u i u i I, an (5) i1 m c i u i 0. i1 Note that taking the trace in (4) yiels m i1 c i. Thus, the Borel measure µ K on S 1 with suppµ K { u 1,..., u k } an µ K ({ u i }) c i / (i 1,..., m) is a iscrete isotropic measure. If a finite system of unit vectors u 1,..., u m in R, together with a set of positive weights c 1,..., c m satisfies (4) an (5), then we say that it forms a John ecomposition of the ientity. For each convex boy K, there exists an affine image K of K for which the maximal volume ellipsoi containe in K is B, an K is unique up to orthogonal transformations of R. The classical lemma of Dvoretzky an Rogers [3] states that in a John ecomposition of the ientity, one can always fin vectors such that the selecte vectors are not too far from an orthonormal system. Lemma 3 (Dvoretzky Rogers lemma [3]). Let u 1,..., u m S 1 an c 1,..., c m > 0 such that (4) hols. Then there exists an orthonormal basis b 1,..., b of R an a subset {x 1,..., x } {u 1,..., u m } with x j lin{b 1,..., b j } an (6) j 1 x j, b j 1 for j 1,...,. Consier the parallelotope P spanne by the selecte vectors x 1,..., x. The volume of P is boune from below by (7) (Vol(P )) 2 [et(x 1,..., x )] 2!. Our stuy of (7) is motivate in part by the recent proof [9] of a conjecture of Bárány, Katchalski an Pach, where this boun is heavily relie on. The main result of this paper is the following theorem in which we improve (7) with the help of Lemma 2 (7) in the following way. Theorem 2. Let u 1,..., u m S 1 be unit vectors satisfying (4) with some c 1,..., c m > 0. Then there is a subset {x 1,..., x } {u 1,..., u m } with [et(x 1,..., x )] 2 γ(, m)!, ( where γ(, m) m m ) 1,! an m min{m, ( + 1)/2}. Moreover, for γ(, m), we have (i) γ(, m) γ(, ( + 1)/2) 3/2 for any 2 an m. An γ(, ( + 1)/2) is monotonically increasing, an lim γ(, ( + 1)/2) e. 2
(ii) Fix a c > 1, an consier the case when m c with c 1 + 1/. Then ( ) (c 1) c 1 c 1 γ(, m) γ(, c ) e, as. c c (iii) Fix an integer k 1, an consier the case when m + k. Then γ(, m) γ(, + k) k!ek e, as. 2π ( + k) k+1/2 We note that in (ii) an (iii), the improvements are exponentially large in as tens to infinity. The geometric interpretation of Theorem 2 is the following. If K is a convex polytope with n facets, an B is the maximal volume ellipsoi in K, then the number of contact points u 1,..., u m in John s theorem is at most m n. Thus, Theorem 2 yiels a simplex in K of not too small volume, with one vertex at the origin. In particular, consier k 1 in Theorem 2 (iii), that is, when K is the regular simplex whose inscribe ball is B. Then the John ecomposition of the ientity etermine by K consists of + 1 unit vectors that etermine the vertices of a regular -simplex inscribe in B, which we enote by, an note that Vol( ) (+1) +1 2 /( /2!). Clearly, in this John ecomposition of the ientity, the volume of the simplex etermine by any of the vectors u 1,..., u +1 is (8) Vol( )/( + 1) By Theorem 2, we obtain that 1 ( + 1) 2 /2! max[et(u i1,..., u i )] 2 ( + 1) 1! ( + 1) 1!, which yiels the same boun for the largest volume simplex as the right-han-sie of (8). Thus, Theorem 2 is sharp in this case. We will use the following result of Gruber an Schuster [5]. Theorem 3 (Gruber, Schuster [5]). If a set of unit vectors satisfies (4) (resp., (4) an (5)) with some positive scalars c i, then a subset of m elements also satisfies (4) (resp., (4) an (5)) with some positive scalars c i, where (9) + 1 m ( + 1)/2 (resp., + 1 m ( + 3)/2). In Section 4, we outline a proof of Theorem 3 for two reasons. First, we will use the part when only (4) is assume, which is only implicitly present in [5]. Secon, in [5], the result is escribe in terms of the contact points of a convex boy with its maximal volume ellipsoi, that is, in the context of John s theorem. We, on the other han, woul like to give a presentation where the linear algebraic fact an its use in convex geometry are separate. Nevertheless, our proof is very close to the one given in [5]. 2. Proof of Lemma 2 The iea of the proof is to slightly rotate each istribution so that the probability that the vectors are linearly inepenent is 1. Then we may apply Pivovarov s lemma, an use a limit argument as the rotations each ten to the ientity. Let A 1,..., A be matrices in SO() chosen inepenently of each other an of the x i s accoring to the unique Haar probability measure on SO(). Fix an arbitrary non-zero unit vector e in R. Note that A i x i / x i an A i e have the same istribution: both are uniformly chosen points of the unit sphere accoring to the uniform probability istribution on S 1. A bit more is true: the joint istribution of A 1 x 1 / x 1,..., A x / x an the joint istribution of A 1 e,..., A e are the same: they are inepenently chosen, uniformly istribute points on the unit sphere. It follows that P(A 1 x 1,..., A x are lin. inep.) P(A 1 e,..., A e are lin. inep.) 1. 3.
Denote the Haar measure on Z : SO() by ν. Thus, we have Z R 1 P(A 1 x 1,..., A x are lin. inep.)... {A1x 1,...,A x are lin. inep.}(x 1,..., x, A 1,..., A ) R R Z µ 1 (x 1 )... µ (x ) ν(a 1,..., A ) P(A 1 x 1,..., A x are lin. inep. A 1,..., A ) ν(a 1,..., A ), where enotes the inicator function. Thus, [ ] (10) 1 P P(A 1 x 1,..., A x are lin. inep. A 1,..., A ) 1. We call a -tuple (A 1,..., A ) Z goo if A 1 x 1,..., A x are linearly inepenent with probability 1. In (10), we obtaine that the set of not goo elements of Z is of measure zero. Thus, we may choose a sequence (A (j) 1, A(j) 2,..., A(j) ), j 1, 2,... in Z, such that A(j) i I < 1/j for all i an j, an (A (j) 1,..., A(j) ) is goo for each j. Note that for any j, (11) an [ ( et A (j) (12) E We conclue that x )] 2 (j) A 1 x 1 2 A (j) 2 x A (j) x 2, [ A (j) 1 x 1 2 A (j) 2 x A (j) x 2]. ( E [et (x 1,..., x )] 2) ( [ ( E et lim A (j) j ( [ ( E lim et A (j) j ( [ ( lim E et A (j) j x x ) ] ) 2 (a) ) ] ) 2 (b) x )] ) 2, where, in (a), we use that the eterminant is continuous. In (b), Lebesgue s Dominate Convergence Theorem may be applie by (11) an (12). Fix j an let y 1 A (j) 1 x 1,..., y A (j) x. In orer to emphasize that the assumption (2) is not neee, an also for completeness, we repeat Pivovarov s argument. For k 1,..., 1, let P k enote the orthogonal projection of R onto the linear subspace span{y 1,..., y k }. Thus, (13) et(y i,..., y ) y 1 P 1 y 2 P 1 y. Note that with probability 1, rankp k k. It follows from (1) that E P k y k+1 k. Fubini s Theorem applie to (13) completes the proof of Lemma 2. 4
3. Proof of Theorem 2 Let u 1,... u m S 1 be a set of vectors satisfying (4) with some positive weights c 1,..., c m. We set the probability of each vector u i, i 1,... m as p i c i /, an obtain a iscrete probability istribution. Let u i1,..., u i be inepenent ranom vectors from the set u 1,..., u m chosen (with possible repetitions) accoring to the above probability istribution. By Lemma 2, we have that E ( [et(u i1,..., u i )] 2)!. Since the probability that the ranom vectors u i1,..., u i are linearly epenent is positive, max[et(u i1,..., u i )] 2 >!. Our goal is to quantify this inequality by bouning from below the probability that the eterminant is 0. Let M 2 : max[et(u i1,..., u i )] 2. Note that if an element of {u 1,..., u m } is selecte at least twice, then et(u i1,..., u i ) 0. Thus, E ( [et(u i1,..., u i )] 2) M 2 P 1, where P 1 enotes the probability that all inices are pairwise istinct. Therefore, M 2! 1. P 1 Note that P 1 is a egree elementary symmetric function of the variables p 1,..., p m. Furthermore, p p m 1 an p i 0 for all i 1,..., m. It can easily be seen (using Lagrange multipliers, or by inuction on m) that for fixe m an, the maximum of P 1 is attaine when p 1... p m 1/m. Thus, ( ) m 1 P 1! m. In summary, ( First, we note that γ(, m) : m m! M 2! ( ) 1 m m.! ) 1 is ecreasing in m. Thus, by (9), we may assume that m is as large as possible, that is, m (+1) 2 proving the first part of Theorem Proof of Theorem 2 (i). Let γ() : γ (, ( + 1)/2). We show that γ() is increasing in. With the notation m : ( + 1)/2, we note that ( + 1)( + 2)/2 m Thus, γ( + 1) (m + + 1)+1 m (m + 1) γ() m (m + + 1) (m + 1) Thus, we nee to show that m > ( 1 + m which, by the AM/GM inequality follows, if (m + + 1) m ) ( 1 + ) ( 1 + m 1 m (m + 1) (m + ) (m + 1) ), m + 1 which is equivalent to m 1 + m + 1 m m +1, m 1 m m m + 1. For this to hol, it is sufficient to show that for every integer or half of an integer 1 i /2, we have that 5
(14) 2 ( 1)m 1 m i + 1 m + i. After substituting m ( + 1)/2, it is easy to see that (14) hols. Finally, lim γ() e follows from Stirling s formula Proof of Theorem 2 (ii) an (iii). Stirling s formula yiels both claims. 4. Proof of Theorem 3 First, observe that (4) hols with some positive scalars c i, if an only if, the matrix I / is in the convex hull of the set A {v i v i : i 1,..., m} in the real vector space of matrices. The set A is containe in the subspace of symmetric matrices with trace 1, which is of imension ( + 1)/2 1. Carathéoory s theorem [8, Theorem 1.1.4] now yiels the esire upper boun on m. In the case when both (4) an (5) are assume, we lift our vectors into R +1 as follows. Let ˆv i +1 (v i, 1/ ) R +1. It is easy to check that ˆv i 1, an that (4) hols for the vectors ˆv i with some positive scalars ĉ i if, an only if, (4) an (5) hol for the vectors v i with scalars c i +1ĉi. Now, ˆv i ˆv i, i 1,..., m are symmetric ( + 1) ( + 1) matrices of trace one, an their ( + 1, +1)th entry is 1/( + 1). The imension of this subspace of R (+1) (+1) is ( + 3)/2 1, thus, again, by Carathéoory s theorem, the proof is complete. 5. Acknowlegements F. Foor an T.
