Noname manuscript No. (will be inserte by the eitor) Scaling properties of the number of ranom sequential asorption iterations neee to generate saturate ranom packing arxiv: v2 [con-mat.stat-mech] Nov 206 Micha l Cieśla Receive: ate / Accepte: ate Abstract The properties of the number of iterations in ranom sequential asorption protocol neee to generate finite saturate ranom packing of spherically symmetric shapes were stuie. Numerical results obtaine for one, two, an three imensional packings were supporte by analytical calculations vali for any imension. It has been shown that the number of iterations neee to generate finite saturate packing is subject to Pareto istribution with exponent / an the meian of this istribution scales with packing size accoring to the power-law characterize by exponent. Obtaine results can be use in esigning effective RSA simulations. Introuction Ranom sequential asorption (RSA) is one of numerical protocols that allow to generate ranom packing of any objects [,2]. It is base on the iteration of two simple steps: - a virtual particle is create. Its position an orientation within a packing is selecte ranomly. - the virtual particle is teste for overlaps with any of the other particles in the packing. If no overlap is foun, it is ae to the packing an hols its position an orientation until the en of simulations. Otherwise, the virtual particle is remove from the packing an abanone. A ranom packing is saturate when there is no possibility to place another particle in it. The name of RSA is relate to irreversible asorption processes where particles are ranomly place on a surface or interface [3,4,5] one iteration of RSA algorithm correspons to one asorption attempt of a single M. 2 2 Micha l Cieśla particle. However, RSA applications are much wier incluing soft matter [6], telecommunication [7], information theory [8] an mathematics [9]. The main problem of RSA is its efficiency when packing is almost saturate. For such packings the probability of placing another particle is very small. Therefore, a large number of iterations is neee to a a particle an packing s growth becomes very slow. Accoring to Feer s law, ensity of particles in an infinite packing changes with the number of asorption attempts accoring to the following relation [0,, 2, 3]: ρ(t) = ρ At /. () Here, ρ is the ensity of particles in a saturate packing, ρ(t) is the ensity of particles in a packing after time t, A is a positive constant an equals to packing imension in case of spherically symmetric shapes (line segments in one imension, isks in two imensions, spheres in three imensions, etc.). The time t equals to the number of attempts of aing a particle per unit length for one imensional packings, area for two imensional packings, volume for three imensional packings, etc. The relation () was teste numerically to be vali for large enough, but finite packings [,4,5,6]. It is commonly use to estimate the number of particles at jamming, however it oes not give any hints relate to the number of RSA iterations neee to saturate a packing. Recently, Zhang et al. have improve RSA algorithm, an showe that it is possible to generate saturate ranom packings of spherically symmetric particles in a reasonable simulation time[7]. The algorithm is base on tracking the area where placing subsequent particles is possible. The iea comes from earlier works concerning RSA on iscrete lattices [8] an eposition of oriente squares on a continuous surface [9]. When particle is ae to the packing this available area ecreases. When it vanishes completely the packing is saturate. Because a single sampling of a particle centre from the available area of size s is equivalent to S/s samplings from the whole packing, this metho makes it possible to etermine number of RSA iterations in original protocol neee to saturate finite packing. The aim of this paper is to analyse properties of this number as a ranom variable. In particular, it is interesting to investigate how it epens on packing size, since a recent stuy suggests that its meian scales accoring to the power-law with an exponent equal to packing imension [20]. 2 Details of numerical simulations Saturate ranom packing were generate using metho escribe in etail in[7]. Line segments, isks an spheres, were packe onto a large line segment, square, an cube, respectively. In all these cases, perioic bounary conitions were use. The size(length, area or volume epening on a packing imension) of packings varie from 0 4 to an a single shape ha a unit volume. For each particular set-up at least 00 of inepenent packings were create.
Title Suppresse Due to Excessive Length 3 For each of the saturate packings, the value of t was recore at the moment when the last particle was ae. 3 Results an iscussion 3. Distribution of simulation time Example of istributions of time neee to get saturate packings of line segments, isks, an spheres obtaine from RSA simulations are shown in Fig.. To stuy the time after which simulation ens lets focus on the probability 0 4 = = 2 = t Fig. Histograms of RSA iterations per unit area neee to saturate -imensional packings. Dots represent numerical ata obtaine from numerically generate 0 4 packings of size S = 0 6 for = an = 2, an S = 0 5 for = 3. Lines correspon to power fits: t 2, t.5 an t.333 for =, 2, an 3, respectively. of placing a particle in the packing, as the inverse of this probability is proportional to the expecte number of iterations neee to fin a large enough place for that particle. This probability has alreay been stuie by Pomeau [0] an Swensen []. For sufficiently long times, in a non-saturate packing, there are separate regions where subsequent particles can be place (see Fig. 2) Swensen assume that inepenently of packing imension, the linear size of such regions is uniformly istribute [], which has been recently confirme in numerical experiments for two imensional ranom packings[20].
4 Micha l Cieśla Fig. 2 Fragment of a non-saturate two-imensional packing of isks with regions (the black triangle-like areas) where centres of subsequent isks can be place. On the right the magnification of one such region. The iameter of re circles is twice as large as the iameter of re isks. This assumption leas to the following istribution of regions sizes: x p s (x) = s 0 (2) where s is a ranom variable enoting the volume of a region, s 0 is the volume of the largest region, an Prob(x < s < x+x) p s (x) lim x 0 x (3) To saturate a packing all such regions shoul be fille. Probability of placing a centre of a particle insie a region is proportional to its area. Because these regions are well separate, placing a subsequent isk in one region oes not affect the probability of filling any other region. This means that, statistically, smaller regions will be fille later than larger ones; thus, the last region to be fille shoul be the smallest one. Therefore, the istribution of iterations neee to generate saturate packing is irectly relate to the istribution of the sizes of the smallest region. As the cumulative istribution function of region area size is F s (x) Prob(s < x) = x 0 ( x p s (t)t = s 0 ). (4) The probability that a ranom variable s min, being the minimum of n inepenent ranom variables s is smaller than a given value x is: Prob(s min < x) = Prob(s > x) Prob(s > x)... Prob(s > x) }{{} n times = [ Prob(s < x)] n. (5)
Title Suppresse Due to Excessive Length 5 Thus, the cumulative istribution function of the s min, is equal to: [ ( ) ] n F smin (x) = [ F s (x)] n x =, (6) an the probability istribution function of s min is p smin (x) = n s 0 s 0 ( ) ] n x x [. (7) s 0 Note that asymptotically for x s 0, the expressionin square bracketsis practically equal to, thus, p smin (x) x /. As note previously, the number of iterations t max neee to create saturate packing is inversely proportional to s min : t max /s min. Thus, taking into account the above relation, asymptotically p tmax (x) x, (8) which is in a quite goo agreement with numerical experiments (see Fig.). 3.2 Meian of simulation time To explain recently observe scaling of the meian of t max with packing size [20], it is necessary to move back to Eq.(6) an solve the equation F smin (x) = /2, which gives the meian of s min. M[s min ] = s 0 [ ( ) ] n (9) 2 Again, as t max /s min, which is monotonic, then M[t max ] /M[s min ], thus M[t max ] [ ( ) ] n (0) 2 Number of regions n that have to be fille scales linearly with packing size S. Moreover, the expression in square brackets may be expane in the series [ (/2) /n ] = ln2/n /2(ln2/n) 2 +o(/n 2 ). Thus, asymptotically for large S (an small /n): [ ] ln2 M[t max ] S () S Numerical confirmation of this result is shown in Fig.3. It is rather obvious that generating larger packings nees more computational time. But, the plot also shows that RSA in higher imensions may be extremely time consuming as the time neee to generate a packing of the same size grows with imension, as well as it scales with packing size with higher exponent. Moreover, packing fraction ecreases with the growth of packing imension [7,
6 Micha l Cieśla M[t max ] = = 2 = S Fig. 3 The epenence of the meian of imensionless time neee to obtain saturate packing on packing size for segments ( = ), isks ( = 2), an spheres ( = 3). Dots represent ata obtaine from numerical analysis of 0 2 packings of size S [0 4,4 0 8 ]. Lines correspons to fits: S, S 2 an S 3 for =, 2, an 3, respectively. 4], which aitionally spoils statistics in numerical simulations. Aitionally, it is worth noting that Feer s law () seems to be vali also for fractional packing s imensions [5, 6]. As its erivation bases on the same assumption as mae here, namely (2), presente results shoul be vali also for fractional s. At last, the relation () works also for anisotropic shapes [2, 22], with parameter enoting a number of egrees of freeom of asorbe particle instea of packing imension [6]. Therefore, the question arises if relations (8) an () are vali for anisotropic particles. But to answer it, the algorithm that generates saturate ranom packing in reasonable computational time is neee. 4 Conclusions The number of RSA iterations neee to generate finite saturate ranom packing of spherically symmetric objects seems to subject to Pareto istribution with an exponent (+/) where is packing imension. The meian of this istribution scales with packing size accoring to the power-law characterize by exponent. Obtaine results can be use to optimize an control time complexity of RSA simulations. In particular, together with results escribe in [20], they allow to esign an RSA simulation that gives possibly the most accurate results within existing time limits.
