FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS WITH SECTIONAL CURVATURE BOUNDED FROM ABOVE arxiv: v [math.dg] Jun 206 ZHUHONG ZHANG Abstract. Given an Einstein structure with positive scalar curvature on a four-imensional Riemannian manifols, that is Ric = λg for some positive constant λ. For convenience, the Ricci curvature is always normalize to Ric =. A basic problem is to classify four-imensional Einstein manifols with positive or nonnegative curvature an Ric =. In this paper, we firstly show that if the sectional curvature satisfies K M = , then the 2 sectional curvature will be nonnegative. Next, we prove a family of rigiity theorems of Einstein four-manifols with nonnegative sectional curvature, an satisfies K ik +sk ij K s = s for every orthonormal 4 6 basis {e i } with K ik K ij, where s is any nonnegative constant. Inee, we will show that these Einstein manifols must be isometric either S 4, RP 4 or CP 2 with stanar metrics. As a corollary, we give a rigiity result of Einstein four-manifols with Ric =, an the sectional curvature satisfies K M 2 = Introuction A Riemannian manifol (M, g) is calle Einstein if the Ricci curvature satisfies the Einstein equation Ric = λg for some constant λ. In ifferential geometric, a basic problem is to classify Einstein manifols with positive or nonnegative sectional curvature in the category of either topology, iffeomorphism, or isometry. By the work of Berger[2], fourimensional Einstein manifol with nonnegative sectional curvature an positive scalarcurvaturemusthaveitseulercharacteristicχ(m)bouneby χ(m) 9. Furthermore, Hitchin [5] ha shown that τ(m) ( 2 )/2 χ(m), where τ(m) is the signature. Later, Gursky an Lebrun [] improve this result, showe that χ(m) > 5 4 τ(m) if the manifol is not half conformally flat. These results suggest that there are few four-imensional manifols can carry Einstein structure with nonnegative sectional curvature an positive scalar curvatur. Inee, Up to now, the only known examples of oriente four-imensional Einstein manifols with nonnegative sectional curvature an positive scalar curvature arethe sphere S 4, the prouct of2-spheress 2 S 2, an the complex projective space CP 2. In the isometric category, Hitchin s classification theorem (see [0] Theorem.0) states that half conformally flat Einstein four-manifols with positive scalar curvature are isometric to either S 4 or CP 2. If Einstein manifols have positive Key wors an phrases. Einstein manifol, Ricci flow, sectional curvature, curvature pinching estimate.
2 ZHUHONG ZHANG curvature, Tachibana[8] prove that Einstein manifols with positive curvature operator are space forms. Recently, Branle[4] improve this result an showe that Einstein manifols with positive isotropy curvature are space forms, an with nonnegative isotropy curvature are locally symmetric. On the other han, If Einstein manifols have positive or nonnegative sectional curvature, Gursky an LeBrun [] showe that compact Einstein four-manifols of nonnegative sectional curvature an positive intersection form are CP 2. While Yang [20] consiere Einstein four-manifol with Ric =, an with nonnegative sectional curvature. If the sectional curvature further satisfies conition (a): K ( 249 2)/ or conition (b): 2K ik + K ij 9 4 for every orthonormal basis {e i } with K ik K ij, then it must be isometric either S 4, RP 4 or CP 2 with stanar metrics. Later, Costa [9] improve Yang s result, showe that if K ǫ 0 = (2 2)/ , then Yang s result remains true. In this paper, we will consier Einstein four-manifols with sectional curvature boune from above by a constant less than. Firstly, we obtain a important observation of Einstein four-manifols as follow. Theorem.. Let (M, g) be a complete four-imensional Einstein manifol with Ric =, an the sectional curvature satisfies K M = Then, (M, g) must have nonnegative sectional curvature. In the next part, we consier the rigiity of Einstein four-manifols with nonnegative sectional curvature Theorem.2. For any constant s 0, let K s = s, an we have the following property. Suppose (M,g) be a complete four-imensional Einstein manifol with nonnegative sectional curvature, an Ric =. If we further assume that K ik +sk ij K s for every orthonormal basis {e i } T o M, which satisfies K ik K ij. Then, (M,g) must be isometry to either the Eucliean sphere S 4, the real projective space RP 4 with constant sectional curvature K =, or the complex projective space CP2 with the normalize Fubini-Stuy metric. Take s = 2, then we have the following rigiity theorem, which generalizeyang s result [20]. Corollary.. Let (M, g) be a complete four-imensional Einstein manifol with nonnegative sectional curvature, an Ric =. If we further assume that 2K ik +K ij for every orthonormal basis {e i } T o M, which satisfies K ik K ij. Then, (M,g) must be isometry to either the Eucliean sphere S 4, the real projective space RP 4 with constant sectional curvature K =, or the complex projective space CP2 with the normalize Fubini-Stuy metric. Remark.4. In [20], Yang showe the rigiity theorem uner the conition that 2K ik +K ij
FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS WITH SECTIONAL CURVATURE BOUNDED FROM ABOVE Combine the above two theorems, we obtain the following rigiity theorem of Einstein four-imensional with sectional curvature boune from above. Theorem.5. Let (M, g) be a complete four-imensional Einstein manifol with Ric =, an the sectional curvature K satisfies K M 2 = Then, (M,g) must be isometry to either the Eucliean sphere S 4, the real projective space RP 4 with constant sectional curvature K =, or the complex projective space CP 2 with the normalize Fubini-Stuy metric. Remark.6. In [9], Costa showe a similar rigiity theorem uner the conition that the sectional curvature satisfies K 2. Our theorem can be consiere as a generalization of Costa s result. A curial iea on the classification theorem of Einstein four-manifols is the Weitzenböak formula. Usually one nee to prove a Kato type inequality to get some curvature estimates for the self-ual an anti-ual Weyl tensor W ± in terms of the length function W ±. However, our proof will base on the Ricci flow theory. In 982, Hamilton [2] introuce Ricci flow to stuy compact three-manifols with positive Ricci curvature. Later, Ricci flow theory have become a important tool in ifferential geometry. For example, by using the Ricci flow, we obtaine the classification theorem of manifols with positive curvature operator [, ], Poincaré an geometrization conjecture [6, 7, 6], /4-pinche ifferential sphere theorem [5], the classification theorem of manifols with positive isotropy curvature [4, 8, 7], etc.. In this paper, we will use the avance maximum principle to construct some pinching sets that invariant uner the Ricci flow, which suggest that the curvature will become better an better along the Ricci flow. But since manifols we consier are Einstein, the metric only change by scaling along the Ricci flow, so the initial metric must be goo enough, an we get our rigiity theorem. The rest of the paper is organize into five sections. In Section 2, we introuce some basic facts about Einstein four-manifols that will be use throughout the paper, an obtain a key estimate Lemma 2.2. We will introuce sone basic facts anode systemabout Ricci flowon four-manifolsin Section, anthen weprove Theorem. by using Lemma 2.2. In Section 4 an Section 5, we will prove rigiity results Theorem.2 an Theorem.5, respectively. The arguments are base on the pinche estimate Claim 4.2, which will be prove by using a key estimate Lemma 4.. Acknowlegements The author was partially supporte by NSFC Preliminaries Let (M, g) be a close oriente four-imensional Einstein manifol. The space Λ 2 ± ofself-ualananti-selfual2-formsonm aretheeigenspacesoftheeigenvalues + an of the Hoge star operator on 2-forms, respectively. This gives an orthogonal ecomposition Λ 2 = Λ 2 + Λ 2.
4 ZHUHONG ZHANG Furthermore, this ecomposition inuces a block ecomposition of the curvature operator matrix as ( ) A B M αβ = t, B C an B 0 on M since M is Einstein. For any point o M, we will enote by K(π) the sectional curvature of the plane π T o M. It is well known that K(π) = K(π ), where π T o M is the plane perpenicular to π. More precisely, by choosing a positive oriente orthonormal basis {e i } of T o M, we have K 2 = K 4, K = K 24 an K 4 = K 2, where K ij is the sectional curvature of the plane spanne by e i,e j. Let {θ i } be the ual orthonormal coframe, then a basis of Λ 2 + is ϕ = θ θ 2 +θ θ 4, ϕ 2 = θ θ +θ 4 θ 2, ϕ = θ θ 4 +θ 2 θ, while a basis for Λ 2 is ψ = θ θ 2 θ θ 4, ψ 2 = θ θ +θ 4 θ 2, ψ = θ θ 4 +θ 2 θ. In orer to give a representation more specific for the curvature operator matrix A an C, we shall nee the following lemma ue to Berger [2]. Proposition 2.. Let (M, g) be an oriente four-imensional Einstein manifol. For a point o M, there exists a positive oriente orthonormal basis {e i } of T o M, such that the curvature tensor {R ijkl } satisfies the following properties. (). K 2 = R 22 = min{k(π) π T o M}. (2). K 4 = R 44 = max{k(π) π T o M}. (). R ikjk = 0 for all i j. (4). R 42 R 24 K K 2, R 42 R 42 K 4 K, an R 42 R 24 K 4 K 2. Throughout this paper, we always choose the above basis {e i } of T o M to get some estimates. A simple fact is the following observation of curvature operator matrix. For the above basis {e i } of T o M, we obtain the ual coframe {θ i }, an then a basis {ϕ i } of Λ 2 +, a basis {ψ i } of Λ 2. a 0 0 c 0 0 AirectcomputationshowsthatA = 0 a 2 0,anC = 0 c 2 0, 0 0 a 0 0 c where a = 2(K 2 + R 24 ) a 2 = 2(K + R 42 ) a = 2(K 4 + R 42 ) an c = 2(K 2 R 24 ) c 2 = 2(K R 42 ) c = 2(K 4 R 42 ). Define a quaratic function of curvature operator as follow I = (c 2 c )c +(c c )c 2 +(a 2 a )a +(a a )a 2. Now we can pose our key lemma in this section. Lemma 2.2. Let (M, g) be a complete oriente four-imensional Einstein manifol with Ric =, an with the sectional curvature boune from above by K 2. Fixe a point o M, if at this point the least sectional curvature K 2 ǫ < 0 for some positive constant ǫ. Then the following hol.
FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS WITH SECTIONAL CURVATURE BOUNDED FROM ABOVE5 (). If a 2 0 an c 2 0, then (2). If a 2 < 0 or c 2 < 0, then I 6 ǫ. I > 4 ǫ. Proof. Choose the basis {e i } of Proposition 2.. Note that K 2 +K = K 4 2 > 0, the manifol has two-positive sectional curvature. (). Since a 2 0 an c 2 0, we have I (c 2 c )c +(a 2 a )a. Now Ric =, so a + a 2 + a = c + c 2 + c = R 2 = 2. An then a (a +a 2 +a ) = 2. Similarly, c 2. So we can obtain I 2 [(a 2 +c 2 ) (a +c )] = 8 (K K 2 ) = 8 (K 2 +K 2K 2 ) > 6 ǫ. (2). Without lose of generality, we can assume a 2 < 0. By irect computation, we have 4 I =[(K R 42 ) (K 2 R 24 )](K 4 R 42 ) +[(K +R 42 ) (K 2 +R 24 )](K 4 +R 42 ) +[(K 4 R 42 ) (K 2 R 24 )](K R 42 ) +[(K 4 +R 42 ) (K 2 +R 24 )](K +R 42 ) =2(K K 2 )K 4 +2(R 42 R 24 )R 42 +2(K 4 K 2 )K +2(R 42 R 24 )R 42. Hence by the first Bianchi ientity, 8 I = (K K 2 )K 4 +(K 4 K 2 )K +R R 42 R 42. The conition of two-positive sectional curvature implies that K > K 2 ǫ > 0. It is easy to see that K 4 K4+K 2 > K4+K+K2 2 = 2. Denote by x = R 24, y = R 42. Then R 42 = x+y, an hence R R 42 R 42 = x 2 2y(x+y). In the following, we ivie the argument into three cases. Case : K 4 K 7 2 (K K 2 ). In this case, K 4 K < 7K, an then 8K > K 4. Note that R R 42 R 42 = [2(x y)2 +2(x y)(x+2y) (x+2y) 2 ] 2 (x+2y)2. Now since a 2 < 0, we obtain a < 0, an hence x > K 2, y > K > 0.
6 ZHUHONG ZHANG This implies that x + y > K 2 + K > 0, an x + 2y > 0. Furthermore, by Proposition 2., we have x+2y = R 42 R 42 K 4 K, so we have 8 I (K K 2 )K 4 +(K 4 K 2 )K 2 (K 4 K ) 2 =(K K 2 )(K 4 +K )+(K 4 K )K 2 (K 4 K ) 2 >(K K 2 )(K 4 +K ) ( 2 7 )(K 4 K ) 2 >(K K 2 )(K 4 +K ) 5 4 (K K 2 )(K 4 K ) = 4 (K K 2 )(9K K 4 ) > 4 2( K 2) 8 K 4 > 2 ǫ. Case 2: K 4 K > 7 2 (K K 2 ), an x 0. By Proposition 2., we have An then y x = R 42 R 24 K K 2. R R 42R 42 =x 2 6xy 2(x y) 2 2(K K 2 ) 2. so we have 8 I (K K 2 )K 4 +(K 4 K 2 )K 2(K K 2 ) 2 (K K 2 )(K 4 +K )+(K 4 K )K 2(K K 2 ) 2 >(K K 2 )[K K +2(K +K 2 )] >2( K 2 )K 4 > ǫ. Case : K 4 K > 7 2 (K K 2 ), an x > 0. Similarly, we have x+2y K 4 K, y > 0, an R R 42R 42 = [2(x y)2 +2(x y)(x+2y) (x+2y) 2 ] [2(x y)2 +2(x y)(k 4 K ) (K 4 K ) 2 ]. Furthermore, by y x K K 2, an x y > 2 (x+2y) 2 (K 4 K ), so we have R24+2R 2 42 R 42 [2(K K 2 ) 2 2(K K 2 )(K 4 K ) (K 4 K ) 2 ].
FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS WITH SECTIONAL CURVATURE BOUNDED FROM ABOVE7 Denote by m = K 2, M = K 4, then z = K = (m+m), an 8 I =M(z m)+z(m m)+[2(z m)2 2(z m)(m z) (M z) 2 ] =M( M 2m)+( M m)(m m)+2( M 2m) 2 2( M 2m)(2M +m ) (2M +m ) 2 = 4M 2 ++8mM 5m+4m 2 = 4M 2 ++( m)(5 8M)+4m 2 >7ǫ, the last inequality hols because 4M Combining the above argument, we complete the proof of Lemma Einstein four-manifols with two-positive sectional curvature Let (M,g) be a close Riemannian manifol, an g ij (t) is the unique short time solution of Ricci flow t g ij(t) = 2R ij (t). In terms of moving frames [], the curvature operator M αβ evolves by t M αβ = M αβ +M 2 αβ +M # αβ, where M # αβ is the Lie algebra ajoint of M αβ. An the ODE corresponing to the above equations is t M αβ = Mαβ 2 +M # αβ. (ODE) Suppose (M, g) is a close oriente four-imensional normalize Einstein manifol with positive scalar curvature, it is easy to see that the unique solution of Ricci flow is a self-similar solution given by g(t) = ( 2t)g, t (, 2 ). Follow by the iscussion in the last section, we have a goo block ecomposition of the curvature operator matrix ( ) A 0 M αβ =, 0 C where A an C are iagonalize by the eigenvalues {a i } an {c i }, respectively. Furthermore, the ODE corresponing to the Ricci flow of A an C becomes t A = A2 +2A, t C = C2 +2C. So the ODE system of eigenvalues are given by t a = a 2 +2a 2 a, t a 2 = a a a, t a = a 2 +2a a 2, Now we can prove Theorem.. t c = c 2 +2c 2 c, t c 2 = c c c, t c = c 2 +2c c 2,.
8 ZHUHONG ZHANG Proof. of Theorem. If M is not orientable, we can lift the Einstein metric onto an oriente 2-cover of M. So we always assume (M,g) is an oriente fourimensional Einstein manifols with Ric =, an K 2. Let κ = min K R, where R is the scalar curvature. We only nee to prove κ 0. If not, then there exist some constant ǫ > 0, such that K 2 = mink(π) < ǫ. Now for the self-similar solution of Ricci flow g(t), we have the following claim. Claim.. There exist a constant δ > 0, such that a +c (κ+δt)r is preserve uner the Ricci flow for all t 0. proof of Claim.. Consier the set Ω of matrices efine by the above inequality. It is easy to see that Ω is close, convex an O(n)-invariant. By using the avance maximum principle, we only nee to show the set Ω is preserve by the (ODE) system. Inee, we only nee to look at points on the bounary of the set. Suppose at some point (o,t), a +c = (κ+δt)r. Then t (a +c ) =a 2 +2a 2a +c 2 +2c 2c =a (a +a 2 +a )+c (c +c 2 +c )+I =(a +c ) R 2 +I =(κ+δt) R2 2 +I On the other han, since g(t) is just a scaling of Einstein matric g, R ij (t) = λ(t)g ij (t) = R(t) 4 g ij(t), [ ] (κ+δt)r =(κ+δt) t t R+δR =(κ+δt) 2 Ric 2 +δr =(κ+δt) R2 2 +δr Furthermore, follow by Lemma 2.2, I > C(ǫ)R for some positive constant C = C(ǫ). Take δ = C(ǫ), an we complete the proof of Claim.. By Claim., we obtain that a +c > κr for all small t > 0, but this is impossible, since g(t) is a scaling of g, an then a +c = κr at some point for all t.
FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS WITH SECTIONAL CURVATURE BOUNDED FROM ABOVE9 4. Rigiity of Einstein four-manifols with curvature boune from below In this section, we will consier the rigiity of Einstein four-manifols with curvature boune from below. Given any constant s 0, let K s = s. 4 6 Then we can get the following key lemma. Lemma 4.. Suppose (M, g) is a complete oriente four-imensional Einstein manifol with nonnegative sectional curvature an Ric =. If we further assume that K ik + sk ij K s for every orthonormal basis {e i } with K ik K ij, an the least sectional curvature K 2 ǫ 0 ǫ, where ǫ 0 = Then the following hol. (). If a 2 0 an c 2 0, then I > 8 ǫ. (2). If a 2 < 0 or c 2 < 0, then I > ǫ. Proof. Choose the basis {e i } of Proposition 2.. It is easy to see that K +sk 2 < s < s (). Follow the same argument as Lemma 2.2, I (c 2 c )c +(a 2 a )a 2 [(a 2 +c 2 ) (a +c )] = 8 (K K 2 ) = 8 [K +sk 2 (+s)k 2 ] 8 [K s (+s)ǫ 0 +(+s)ǫ] [ 2 +(+s)ǫ] > 8 4 ǫ. (2). Similarly, we can assume a 2 < 0. Then a < 0. Let x = R 24, y = R 42. We have Furthermore, an Since x > K 2 0, y > K > 0. 0 < x+2y = R 42 R 42 K 4 K, y x = R 42 R 24 K K 2. 8 I = (K K 2 )K 4 +(K 4 K 2 )K +R R 42 R 42,
0 ZHUHONG ZHANG an R R 42R 42 =x 2 2y(x+y) = [2(x y)2 +2(x y)(x+2y) (x+2y) 2 ] [2(x y)2 +2(x y)(k 4 K ) (K 4 K ) 2 ] Note that x y 2 (x+2y) 2 (K 4 K ), so we have R R 42 R 42 [2(K K 2 ) 2 2(K K 2 )(K 4 K ) (K 4 K ) 2 ]. Denote by m = K 2, z = K +sk 2, then K 4 = K 2 K, an 8 I =(K K 2 )( K 2 K )+( 2K 2 K )K +2(K K 2 ) 2 2(K K 2 )( K 2 2K ) ( K 2 2K ) 2 = +K 2 +8K +2K 2 2 4K2 6K 2K = 4z 2 +8(+sm 2m)z +[ +( 8s)m+2(+8s 2s 2 )m 2 ] It is easy to see that m ( 8 I) =8z(s 2)+ 8s+4m(+8s 2s2 ) = (6z 4m) 8s(+ms z 4m). Since s is nonnegative, z K s , an m ǫ , we have On the other han, 6z 4m >. +ms z 4m = K 4 m ǫ 0 > 0. Hence So While m ( I) <. 8 8 I 8 I m=ǫ0 ǫ > 8 I m=ǫ0 +ǫ. 8 I m=ǫ0 = 4z 2 +8(+sǫ 0 2ǫ 0 )z +[ +( 8s)ǫ 0 +2(+8s 2s 2 )ǫ 2 0] 0,
FOUR-DIMENSIONAL EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS WITH SECTIONAL CURVATURE BOUNDED FROM ABOVE because the facts that z = K +sk 2 < s+ 4, an z 2ǫ 0 +sǫ 0 2 ( 2ǫ0 )( ǫ 0 ) = s Now we can following a similar argument to prove our main theorem.2. Proof. of Theorem.2 Follow the same argument as Theorem., we can assume (M, g) is an oriente four-imensional Einstein manifols with nonnegative sectional curvature an Ric =. In the following, we will ivie the argument into two cases. Case. mink ǫ 0. In this case, by the theorem of Costa [9], the theorem hols. Case 2. mink < ǫ 0. But this is impossible. We will argue by contraiction. Since M is compact, there exist a constant ǫ > 0, such that mink ǫ 0 ǫ. Let κ = min K R, where R is the scalarcurvature. We havethe followingassertion. Claim 4.2. There exist a constant δ > 0, such that a +c (κ+δt)r is preserve uner the Ricci flow for all t 0. proof of Claim 4.2. Similarly, weonlyneetoshowthatalongthe(ode)system, t (a +c ) t [(κ+δt)r] at the bounary a +c = (κ+δt)r. Note that an Then by Lemma 4., t (a +c ) = (κ+δt) R2 2 +I, [ ] (κ+δt)r = (κ+δt) R2 t 2 +δr. I > C(ǫ)R for some positive constant C = C(ǫ). Take δ = C(ǫ), an we get our assertion. But Claim 4.2 evelops a contraiction that a +c > κr for all small t > 0. An we complete the proof of Theorem.2.
2 ZHUHONG ZHANG 5. Rigiity of Einstein four-manifols with two-positive sectional curvature In this section, we will consier the rigiity of Einstein four-manifols with twopositive sectional curvature. Take s = in Lemma 4.. Then the assumption of curvature becomes K ik + K ij K, that means the sectional curvature satisfies K K = Now we can prove our main theorem = M 2. 4 Proof. of Theorem.5 Similarly, we can assume (M,g) is an oriente fourimensional Einstein manifols with Ric =. An the sectional curvature has a upper boun M 2 means K ik +K ij K. On the other han, M 2 < M, so Theorem. implies that the sectional curvature must be nonnegative. Hence mink ǫ 0. (Otherwise, we can follow the same argument as Theorem.2, by using Lemma 4. to construct a pinche set invariant uner the Ricci flow, an evelop a contraiction.) So we can apply Costa s result [9] to get our rigiity theorem. References. M. Berger, Sur quelques varietes riemanniennes suffisamment pincees, Bull. Soc. Math. France 88 (960), M.
