VARIATION OF THE ODUUS OF A FOIATION. CISKA arxiv: v1 [math.dg] 30 ay 2012 Abstract. The p moulus mo p (F) of a foliation F on a Riemannian manifol is a generalization of extremal length of plane curves introuce by. Ahlfors. We stuy the variation t mo p (F t ) of the moulus. In particular, we consier prouct of mouli of orthogonal foliations. 1. Introuction oulus, an inverse of extremal length, of a family of a plane curves is a conformal invariant [1]. The notion of a moulus can be generalize to any family of submanifols [4, 2] an, hence, to a foliation. Roughly speaking, the p moulus mo p (F) of a k imensional foliation on a n imensional Riemannian manifol is the infimum of p th norm over all nonnegative, p integrable functions f such that f 1 for almost every F. If n = kp, then the amount mo p (F) is a conformal invariant. In this paper, we stuy the variation of a moulus. We generalize the result obtaine by Kalina an Pierzchalski [5] for coimension one foliations given by a submersion. We assume the existence of a function f 0 which realizes the p moulus an o not put any requirements on the imension an coimension of a foliation on a Riemannian manifol (, g). The methos use hereareifferent thanthe oneusein[5] anrelyonaintegral formula obtaine by the author in [3]: f 0 ϕµ = f p 0 ϕµ, where ϕ(x) = ϕµ x. x The main formula is the following (1.1) t mo p(f t ) p t=0 = p f 0 (g( f 0,X)+f 0 iv F0 X) µ. which is vali for all amissible foliations i.e. foliations satisfying certain assumptions (see Theorem 4.1). We show that all foliations given by a submersion are amissible (Theorem 3.1). Usingtheformula(1.1)weobtainconitionsforafoliationtobeacritical point of a variation. We show that foliation is a critical point of a variation if an only if the graient of extremal function f 0 is a combination of 2000 athematics Subject Classification. 53C12; 58C35; 58E30. 2 2. CISKA mean curvature of a foliation an istribution orthogonal to this foliation (Corollary 4.4). 2. Preliminaries et(,g)beariemannianmanifol,f ak imensional foliationon. et µ an µ enote ebesgue measures on an F, respectively. Fix the coefficient p > 1 an let p () be a space of all p integrable functions on with respect to µ with the norm f p = ( )1 f p µ p. Denote by am p (F) a subfamily of p () of all nonnegative functions f such that f µ 1 for almost every F. The p moulus mo p (F) of F is efine as follows mo p (F) = inf f am p(f) f p if am p (F) an mo p (F) = otherwise [3]. Function f 0 am p (F) which realizes the moulus i.e. f 0 p = mo p (F) is calle extremal function for p moulus of F. An extremal function oes not exist for any foliation. Namely, we have the following characterization of existence of f 0. Proposition 2.1 ([3]). There exists an extremal function for p moulus of a foliation F if an only if for any subfamily F such that mo p (F) = 0 we have µ( ) = 0. Remark 2.2. Notice that the moulus for any subfamily F is efine in the same way consiering functions efine on not only on. The extremal function has the following properties. Proposition 2.3 ([3]). Assume there exists an extremal function f 0 for p moulus of F. Then (1) f 0 = 1 for almost every leaf F, (2) f 0 > 0, (3) for any ϕ p () we have ϕ 1 () for almost every leaf F. Assume there exists an extremal function for a p moulus of a foliation F. Then, by Proposition 2.3, for any ϕ p () we have ϕ 1 () for almost every F. Hence, the following function ϕ(x) = ϕµ x, x x F. x is well efine.
VARIATION OF THE ODUUS OF A FOIATION 3 Theorem 2.4 ([3]). et f 0 be an extremal function for p moulus of F. et ϕ p () be such that esssup ϕ < an esssup ϕ <. Then f 0 ϕµ = f p 0 ϕµ. Consier now a foliation F given by the level sets of a submersion Φ : N i.e. F = {Φ 1 (y)} y N. Decompose the tangent bunle T into vertical an horizontal istributions T = V H, V = kerφ, H = V, where enotes the orthogonal complement with respect to Riemannian metric on. Then Φ x : H x T Φ(x) N, x, is a linear isomorphism. et Φ x : T Φ(x)N H x be an ajoint linear operator. The Jacobian JΦ of Φ is equal JΦ(x) = et(φ x Φ x : H x H x ), x. The conition for existence of an extremal function for a foliation given by the level sets of a submersion takes the following form. Proposition 2.5 ([3]). et F be a foliation efine by a submersion Φ : N such that JΦ < C for some constant C. et x enotes the leaf of F through x an put F = {x : µ x ( x ) = }. Assume moreover µ () <. Then, there is an extremal function for p moulus of F (for any p > 1) if an only if µ (F ) = 0. There is an explicit formula for an extremal function in the case of a foliation given by a submersion. Proposition 2.6 ([5, 3]). If f 0 is an extremal function for p moulus of a foliation F given by the level sets of a submersion Φ : N, then f 0 =. 3. Amissible foliations et (,g) be a Riemannian manifol, p > 1. et X be a compactly supporte vector fiel on, ϕ t a flow of X. et F be a foliation on an put F t = ϕ t (F). We say that X is amissible for p moulus of F if, for some interval I = ( ε,ε), we have (A1) there exists anextremal function f t for p moulus of F t for all t I, (A2) the function α(x,t) = (f t ϕ t )(x) is C 1 smooth with respect to variable t I, (A3) there is h 1 p () such that α(x,t) < h 1 (x) for all t I,
4. CISKA (A4) there is h 2 p () such that α t (x,t) < h 2(x) for all t I. In aition, if every compactly supporte vector fiel is amissible for p moulus of F, then we say that F is p amissible. The main result of this section is the following. Theorem 3.1. et F be a foliation on a Riemannian manifol given by the level sets of a submersion Φ : N. Assume (1) C 1 < JΦ < C 2 an ˆ1 < C 3 for some positive constants C 1,C 2,C 3, (2) an extremal function for p moulus of F is smooth (p > 1). Then F is p amissible. Proof. et X be compactly supporte vector fiel on an let ϕ t be a flow of X. Put F t = ϕ t (F). Then F t is given by the level sets of the submersion Φ t = Φ ϕ 1 t : N. oreover JΦ t = JΦ J ϕ 1 t, where J ϕ 1 t is a smooth function epening only on ifferential ϕ t of the map ϕ t. et t z enotes the leaf of F t through z i.e. t z = Φ 1 t (Φ t (z)), z. We ivie the proof into few steps. Step 1 there exist an extremal function f t for p moulus of F t. Since C 1 < JΦ < C 2 an ϕ t is a flow of compactly supporte vector fiel thenthejacobianjφ t isboune. Sinceµ (F ) = 0,thenµ ((F t ) ) = 0, hence,byproposition2.5,thereexistsanextremalfunctionf t forp moulus of F t. By Proposition 2.6 we have (3.1) f t (z) = (JΦ t) 1 (z) (JΦ t ) 1 µ t z = t z 0 ϕ 1 t (z) (JΦ ϕ 1 t (z)) 1 (J ϕ 1 t (z)) 1 ((J ϕ 1 t ) ϕ t ) 1 J ϕ t µ 0 Step 2 function t α(x,t) = (f t ϕ t )(x) is C 1 smooth. By (3.1) (3.2) (f t ϕ t )(x) = Functions an 0 x (JΦ(x)) 1 (J ϕ 1 t (ϕ t (x))) 1 ϕ 1 t (z) ((J ϕ 1 t ) ϕ t ) 1 J ϕ t µ 0 x t β 1 (x,t) = (J ϕ 1 t (ϕ t (x))) 1 t β 2 (x,t) = ((J ϕ 1 t ) ϕ t ) 1 J ϕ t.
VARIATION OF THE ODUUS OF A FOIATION 5 are smooth an positive. Since X is compactly supporte, for any close interval I containing 0 R, functions β 1 (x,t), β 1 t (x,t), β 2(x,t), β 2 (x,t), (x,t) I t are boune. By ebesgue ominate convergence theorem, function I t α(x, t) is ifferentiable. Analogously, we show that this function is twice ifferentiable, hence is C 1 smooth. Step 3 f t ϕ t < Cf 0 an (f t t ϕ t ) < Cf 0 for some C > 0. By (3.2) (f t ϕ t )(x) = an t (f t φ t ) = x 0 0 x β1 (x,t) β2 (x,t)µ x 0 β 1 (x,t) t β2 (x,t)µ 0 x β1 (x,t) C = Cf 0 0 x 0 x C β 2 0 x ( ) 2 0 β2 (x,t)µ 0 x x µ 0 x +C (JΦ) 1 µ 0 x = Cf 0 (x,t)µ t 0 x 0 x ( ) 2 0 µ 0 x x µ 0 x Step 4 inff 0 > 0. Follows from the fact that C 1 < JΦ < C 2 an ˆ1 < C 3 i.e. f 0 C 1 1 > 0. C 1 2 C 3 By above theorem we get immeiately the following corollary. Corollary 3.2. et F be a foliation given by the level sets of a submersion Φ : N, where is compact. Assume an extremal function for p moulus of F is smooth. Then F is p amissible. 4. Variation of moulus In this section, we consier the variation of p moulus uner the flow of compactly supporte vector fiel. The formula for a variation implies some results about an extremal function.
6. CISKA et F be a k imensional foliation on a Riemannian manifol (, g). Denote by iv F X the ivergence of a vector fiel X Γ(T) with respect to leaves of F i.e. k iv F X = g( ei X,e i ), i=1 where e 1,...,e k is a local orthonormal basis of TF an the evi Civita connection on. et H F an H F enote the mean curvatures of F an the istribution F orthogonal to F, respectively. If X is tangent to F then the ivergence iv X on an the ivergence on the leaves iv F X are relate as follows (4.1) iv X = iv F X g(x,h F ), X Γ(TF). oreover, if ϕ t is a flow of a vector fiel X Γ(T) an F t = ϕ t (F), then (4.2) t J ϕ t (x) t=t0 = J ϕ t0 (x)iv Ft0 X, where J ϕ t is the Jacobian of ϕ t restricte to leaves of F. In particular, t J ϕ t (x) t=0 = iv F X. Theorem 4.1. et F be a foliation on a Riemannian manifol (,g). et X be compactly supporte vector fiel on, which is amissible for p moulus of F. Assume there exists smooth extremal function f 0 for p moulus of F. Then, the following formula hols (4.3) t mo p(f t ) p t=0 = p f 0 (g( f 0,X)+f 0 iv F X)µ. Before we prove above theorem we will nee the following technical lemma. emma 4.2. et h : R 2 R be efine as follows h(x,t,s) = (f s ϕ t )(x). Then h x (x,t,s) = g( f s(ϕ t (x)),x ϕt(x)), In particular, (4.4) h s (x,t,s) = f s s (ϕ t(x)). t (f t ϕ t )(x) = g( f t (ϕ t (x)),x ϕt(x))+ f t t (ϕ t(x)). Proof. Consier two maps F : R R an ϕ : R R, Then h = F (ϕ,i R ). Hence F(x,s) = f s (x), ϕ(x,t) = ϕ t (x). h t = h t = F (ϕ t,0) = F (X,0) = f s X = g( f s,x)
VARIATION OF THE ODUUS OF A FOIATION 7 an h t = h s = F (0, s ) = f s s. Proof of Theorem 4.1. SinceX isamissible forp moulusoff, thenthere are functions h 1,h 2 p () such that conitions (A1) an (A2) hol. By emma 4.2 an (4.2) we have t ( (ft ϕ t )J ϕ t ) = t (f t ϕ t )J ϕ t +(f t ϕ t )J ϕ t iv F X t (f t ϕ t ) J ϕ t + f t ϕ t J ϕ t iv F X C 1 h 2 +C 1 C 2 h 1, where J ϕ t < C 1,t I, aniv F X < C 2. Functionh = C 1 h 2 +C 1 C 2 h 1 isin p (), hence, the existence of extremal function f 0 implies that h 1 () for almost every leaf F (Proposition 2.3). By ebesgue ominate convergence theorem, emma 4.2 an (4.2) for any F we have t ( ) (f t ϕ t )J ϕ t µ = t=0 t ((f t ϕ t )J ϕ t ) t=0 µ = (g( f 0,X)+( f t t ) t=0 +f 0 iv F X)µ. et t enotes the leaf of F t i.e. t = ϕ t (), F. Since, by Proposition 2.3, t f t µ t = 1, then 0 = ( ) f t µ t = ( ) (f t ϕ t )J ϕ t µ. t t t t=0 t=0 Hence, by above, ( f t t ) t=0µ = (g( f 0,X)+f 0 iv F X)µ. Notice that ( f t t ) t=0µ = t (f t ϕ t ϕ 1 t ) t=0 µ = t (f t ϕ t ) t (ϕ 1 t ) t=0 µ C h 1 µ for some constant C > 0. Since esssup ĥ1 <, it follows that esssup ( f t t ) t=0 <.
8. CISKA Hence we may use Theorem 2.4 for ϕ = ( ft ) t t=0. oreover, we have f p t µ = f p t µ = (f t ϕ t ) p Jϕ t µ an ϕ t() t ((f t ϕ t ) p Jϕ t ) = p(f t ϕ t ) t (f t ϕ t )Jϕ t +(f t ϕ t ) p t (Jϕ t) C h 1 h 2 +C h p 1 for some constants C,C > 0. By Höler inequality function h 1 h 2 is integrable on, hence function C h 1 h 2 +C h p 1 is integrable on. Thus, by ebesgue ominate convergence theorem an emma 4.2 t mop p (F t) t=0 = ( ) f p t µ t t=0 = ( ) (f t ϕ t ) p Jϕ t µ t t=0 = t ((f t ϕ t ) p Jϕ t ) t=0 µ = (pf 0 t (f t ϕ t ) t=0 +f p 0 ivx)µ = (pf 0 (g( f 0,X)+( f t t ) t=0)+f p 0 ivx)µ = (pf 0 g( f 0,X)+f p 0 ivx)µ +p = iv(f p 0 X)+p f 0 ( f t t ) t=0µ = p f 0 ( f t t ) t=0µ. Finally, by Theorem 2.4, we obtain t mop p(f t ) t=0 = p f p 0( f t t ) t=0µ = p f p 0 ( g( f 0,X)+f 0 iv F X)µ = p f 0 (g( f 0,X)+f 0 iv F X)µ. f 0 ( f t t ) t=0µ Variation of moulus implies the conition for tangent graient of an extremal function (compare Corollary 4.4 [3]) Corollary 4.3. et F be a foliation on a Riemannian manifol (, g). Assume all compactly supporte vector fiels X tangent to F are amissible
for p moulus of F. Then VARIATION OF THE ODUUS OF A FOIATION 9 (logf 0 ) = 1 H F. Proof. et X Γ(TF) be compactly supporte. Then the flow ϕ t of X maps F to F, hence F t = F for all t. Thus, by Theorem 4.1 an formula 4.1, we have 0 = p f 0 (g( f 0,X)+f 0 iv F X)µ = p f 0 (g( f 0,X)+f 0 (iv X +g(h F,X)))µ = ( pf 0 g( f 0,X) pf p 0 (iv X +g(h F,X)))µ = ( g( f p 0,X) p(iv (f p 0 X) g( fp 0,X)) pfp 0 g(h F,X))µ = (g(p f0,x) g( f p 0,X) pf p 0g(H p F,X))µ. Therefore, for compactly supporte vector fiel X Γ(TF) 0 = t mo p(f t ) p t=0 = p f 0 g(() f 0 f 0 H F,X)µ. Since X Γ(TF) is arbitrary, it follows that () f 0 f 0 H F = 0. et F be a p amissible foliation on a Riemannian manifol. We say that F is a critical point of a functional (4.5) F mo p (F), if for any compactly supporte vector fiel X we have t mo p(f t ) = 0, where F t = ϕ t (F) an ϕ t is a flow of X. The following result gives the characterization of critical points. Corollary 4.4. et F be a p amissible foliation on a Riemannian manifol. Then, F is a critical point of (4.5) if an only if (4.6) (logf p 0) = ph F +qh F. where f 0 is an extremal function for p moulus of F an p,q are conjugate coefficients i.e. 1 p + 1 q = 1. Proof. We begin proof by stating general facts. By Corollary 4.3 (4.7) (logf p 0 ) = p H F = qh F.
10. CISKA oreover, since iv F X = g(x,h F ) for X Γ(T F), then (4.8) t mo p(f t ) p t=0 = p g( f p 0 f0h p F,X)µ for all compactly supporte vector fiels X Γ(T F). Assume F is a critical point of a functional (4.5). Then by (4.8) we get f p 0 = f p 0H F, hence (logf p 0 ) = ph F. This, together with (4.7), implies (4.6). Assume now (4.6) hols. Right han sie of (4.3) is linear with respect to X. oreover, for X tangent to F we have (compare proof of Corollary 4.3) mo t p(f t ) t=0 = 0. Hence, by (4.8), it suffices to show that g( f p 0 fp 0 H F,X)µ = 0 for all compactly supporte vector fiels X Γ(T F). This follows by assumption (4.6), which implies (f p 0 ) = fp 0 H F. Now, we consier the case of two orthogonal foliations i.e. we assume that for a given foliation F on a Riemannian manifol (, g) the istribution G = F is integrable. et p,q > 1, be conjugate coefficients i.e. 1 p + 1 q = 1. Theorem 4.5. Assume F is p amissible an G is q amissible. Then the following conitions are equivalent: (1) F an G are a critical points of the functionals F mo p (F) an G mo q (G), respectively, (2) the pair (F,G) is a critical point of a functional (F,G) mo p (F)mo q (G), (3) the extremal functions f 0 of p moulus of F an g 0 of q moulus of G are relate as follows (4.9) mo q (G) q f p 0 = mo p (F) p g q 0. Proof. (1) (2) Follows from the equality (4.10) t (mo p(f t )mo q (G t )) t=0 = t mo p(f t ) t=0 mo q (G)+mo p (F) t mo q(g t ) t=0. (2) (1) By existence of extremal functions of p moulus of F an q moulus of G, it follow by Proposition 2.1 that p moulus of F an q moulus of G are positive. If X Γ(T F), then mo t q(g t ) t=0 = 0, hence,
VARIATION OF THE ODUUS OF A FOIATION 11 by (4.10), t mo p(f t ) t=0 = 0. If X Γ(TF), then mo p (F t ) t=0 = 0. Since the variation of moulus is linear with respect to X, it follows that mo t p(f t ) t=0 = 0 for any compactly supporte vector fiel X. Analogously mo t q(g t ) t=0 = 0 for any compactly supporte vector fiel X. (1) (3) By Corollary 4.4 conition (1) is equivalent to the following (4.11) (logf p 0) = ph F +qh G = (logg q 0). Assume (1) hols. Then by (4.11), f p 0 = Cgq 0 for some constant C > 0. Hence f 0 an g 0 are Höler epenent. Thus ( )1 ( )1 mo p (F)mo q (G) = f0µ p p g0µ q q = f 0 g 0 µ = C 1 q p g p +1 0 µ = C 1 p g0µ q Therefore = C 1 p moq (G 0 ) q. C = mo p(f) p mo q (G) q, so (4.9) hols. Assume now f 0 an g 0 are Höler epenent an (4.9) hols. Thus (4.12) (logf p 0 ) = (loggq 0 ). By Corollary 4.3 we have F (logf p 0 ) = qh G an G (logg q 0 ) = ph F, where F an G enote tangent to F an to G part of the graient, respectively. By above equalities an by (4.12) (logf p 0 ) = F (logf p 0 )+ G (logg q 0 ) = qh G +ph F, hence, by Corollary 4.4, F is a critical point of a functional (4.5). Analogously,G isacriticalpointofafunctional(4.5)withacoefficientq.therefore (1) hols. Acknowlegement. This article is base on a part of author s PhD Thesis.
