ON EXTREA FUNCTION OF A ODUUS OF A FOIATION. CISKA arxiv: v1 [math.dg] 7 ay 212 Abstract. We investigate the properties of a modulus of a foliation on a Riemannian manifold. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an extremal function and state some of its properties. We obtain the integral formula which, in a sense, combines the integral over the manifold with integral over the leaves. We state the relation between an extremal function and the geometry of distribution orthogonal to a foliation. 1. Introduction In 195 Ahlfors and Beurling [1] introduced a conformal invariant called extremal length of a family of curves in a plane. Its inverse, called the modulus, plays major role in the theory of quasiconformal maps. odulus was generalized to family of surfaces and submanifolds [7, 8]. We consider a p modulus of a foliation on a Riemannian manifold. The majority of results in this paper is obtained under the assumption of existence of a an extremal function of modulus i.e. a function which realizes the modulus. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of this function(theorem 3.1). In particular we consider foliations given by the level sets of submersion (Corollary 3.4). oreover, we state some properties of extremal function. Existence of extremal function allows to define a function ˆϕ(x) = f dµ x, x, x for any ϕ p (). The main result is the following integral formula (Theorem 4.2) f ϕdµ = f p ˆϕdµ, where f is the extremal function for p modulus and ϕ p () is such that esssup ϕ < and esssup ˆϕ <. Using this formula we obtain some results concerning the geometry of a foliation. Namely, the tangent gradient of extremal function is related to the mean curvature of distribution 2 athematics Subject Classification. 53C12; 58C35. We consider a foliation by circles on a torus in R 3, a foliation given by a distance function and a foliation by spheres in a ring in R n. 2. odulus of a foliation et(,g)beariemannianmanifold, F afoliationon. Denotebyµ and µ the ebesgue measure on and F, respectively. et p () denotes the space of all measurable and p integrable functions on (with the norm p ). emma 2.1. et A be a measurable set. Then, µ (A) = if and only if µ ({x : µ x (A x ) > }) =. In particular, if f p () is nonnegative, then the integral f dµ exists for almost every leaf F. Proof. Follows by Fubini theorem and the fact that foliation is locally a product (,1) k (,1) n k, where k = dimf, n = dim. In the space p () consider a family adm p (F) of all nonnegative functions f such that f dµ 1 for almost every F. Functions belonging tothisfamilyarecalledadmissible. Thep modulusoff isdefinedasfollows mod p (F) = inf f adm p(f) f p if adm p (F) and mod p (F) = otherwise. We say that f adm p (F) is extremal for p modulus of a foliation F if mod p (F) = f p. Proposition 2.2. [7, 2] The modulus has the following properties. (1) If F and is measurable, then mod p () mod p (F). (2) If F = i i and i is measurable for all i, then mod p (F) p i mod p( i ) p. (3) mod p (F) = if andonlyif thereis f adm p (F)such that f dµ = for almost every F. (4) If f p (), then there is a subfamily such that mod p () = and f 1 () for almost every F \. (5) If f n f in p (), then there is a subsequence (f ni ) of (f n ) and a subfamily F such that mod p () = and f ni f in 1 () for almost every F \.
ON EXTREA FUNCTION OF A ODUUS OF A FOIATION 3 3. Existence and properties of extremal function et be a Riemannian manifold, F a foliation on. Theorem 3.1. There is an extremal function f for p modulus of F if and onlyif for anysubfamily F such that µ( ) > we have mod p () >. Proof. ( ) Suppose there is a family F such that µ( ) > and mod p () =. By Proposition 2.2 there is an admissible function f for such that f = for almost every leaf. oreover, there is n > such that f p > 1 f n p on. Put { f on \ f = 1 on n f Then f is admissible for F but f p > f p. Contradiction. ( ) It suffices to show that adm p (F) is closed in p (). Take the sequence (f n ) of admissible functions convergent to f. Then f p () and f. By Proposition 2.2 there is a subsequence (f ij ) and a subfamily such that mod p (E) = and f n i dµ fdµ for every F \. Hence fdµ 1forevery F\. Sincebyassumptionµ( ) =, we get that fdµ 1 for almost every leaf F. Thus f is admissible. Put F = { F : µ () = } and = F Corollary 3.2. If µ () < and there is an extremal function for p modulus of F for some p > 1, then µ( ) =. Proof. Function f = 1 satisfies the conditions of Proposition 2.2(3) for F. Hence mod p (F ) =. Thus, by Theorem 3.1, µ( ) =. We will specify the conditions for the existence of an extremal function in the case of a foliation given by a level sets of a submersion. et Φ : N be a submersion between Riemannian manifolds. Then there is a decomposition T = V Φ V Φ, where V Φ = kerφ and H Φ = (V Φ ). The differential Φ : H Φ TN is a linear isomorphism. Denoting its dual as Φ : TN HΦ we define the Jacobian JΦ of Φ as follows JΦ = det(φ Φ : H Φ H Φ ). We will need the following version of Fubini theorem [4, 9] ( ) f (1) f dµ = JΦ dµ dµ N, y N.
4. CISKA for any nonnegative and measurable function f. Proposition 3.3. Assume a foliation F is given by a submersion Φ : N such that JΦ < C for some C. et F. If mod p () = for some p > 1, then F. Proof. Suppose F. Then there is a subfamily of such that µ( ) > and µ () < for. By Proposition 2.2(3) there is an admisible function f such that f = for almost every leaf. Thus by Hölder inequality we have fdµ = where 1 p + 1 q (2) ( f (JΦ) 1 (JΦ) 1 p dµ p f p )1 ( )1 JΦ dµ p (JΦ) q q p dµ, = 1. Hence f p JΦ dµ = for almost every. By (2) and Fubini theorem (1) f p p = f p dµ = Contradiction ends the proof. N ( Φ 1(y) f p JΦ dµ ) dµn =. Corollary 3.4. Assume a foliation F is given by a submersion Φ : N. Assume JΦ < C for some C and µ () <. Then there is an extremal function for p modulus of F (for any p > 1) if and only if µ( ) =. Proof. ( ) Follows by Corollary 3.2. ( ) Assume µ( )=. Take F such that mod p () =. Then F by Proposition 3.3. Hence µ( ) µ( ) =. Therefore Theorem 3.1 implies that there is an extremal function for F. In the end of this section we state some properties of an extremal function. Proposition 3.5. et f be an extremal function for p modulus of a foliation F. Then (1) f dµ = 1 for almost every leaf F, (2) f is positive. Proof. (1) Put f = {x : x f dµ x < }. By Proposition 2.2(3) and Theorem 3.1 µ ( \ f ) =. Hence we may assume = f. Consider a function f(x) = f (x) x f dµ x, x.
ON EXTREA FUNCTION OF A ODUUS OF A FOIATION 5 Then f is admissible, f f and f p f p. Since f is extremal, we have f p = f p. Therefore f = f, so f dµ = 1 for almost every leaf F. (2) Suppose there is a set A of positive and finite measure such that f = on A. Put A 1 = {x A : < µ x ( x A) < }, A 2 = {x A : µ x ( x A) = }, A 3 = {x A : µ x ( x A) = }. By emma 2.1 µ (A 3 ) =. Hence we may assume A = A 1 A 2. et t 1 and put { 1 t µ f(x) = x ( x A 1 x A ) 1 tf (x) x \A 1 Then f and fdµ = 1 for almost every leaf F. oreover, f p p = (1 t)p C +t p f p p, where C = A 1 1 µ x ( x A 1 ) pdµ. Hence f p < f p if and only if the function α(t) = (1 t) p C +t p f p p f p p, t 1, is negative at some t. Existence of such t follows from the fact that α(1) = and α (1) >. Remark 3.6. Proposition 3.5(1) was first established in [3] but obtained under the assumption of continuity of extremal function. 4. The integral formula et be a Riemannian manifold, F a foliation on. Assume there exists an extremal function f for p modulus of F. emma 4.1. If ϕ p (), then ϕ 1 () for almost every leaf F. Proof. Follows immediately by Theorem 3.2 and Proposition 2.2(4). By above lemma, for any ϕ p () the following function ˆϕ(x) = ϕdµ x, x x is well defined. Theorem 4.2. Assume essinf f >. Then there is the following integral formula (3) f ϕdµ = f p ˆϕdµ,
6. CISKA for any function ϕ P () such that esssup ϕ < and esssup ˆϕ <. Proof. et ϕ p (), esssup ϕ < and assume ˆϕ < C for some C >. Put t = 1 2C. For any t [,t ) consider functions f ± t (x) = f (x)±tϕ(x) f ±tϕ(x) = f (x)±tϕ(x), x. 1±tˆϕ(x) Then f ± t p () and for sufficiently small t, f ± t. Clearly f± t dµ 1 for almost every F. Hence f ± t adm p (F). Therefore (4) f p f ± t p. Fix x and define a function δ(t) = f ± t (x) p. Then δ() = f (x) p. Since δ is smooth, by mean value theorem, there is θ(t) (,t) such that δ(t) δ() = δ (θ(t))t. oreover (5) δ (t) = ±p (f (x)±tϕ(x)) (ϕ(x) f (x)ˆϕ(x)) (1±tˆϕ(x)) p+1 Hence f ± t (x)p f (x) p = ±p (f (x)±θ(t)ϕ(x)) (ϕ(x) f (x)ˆϕ(x)) (1±θ(t)ˆϕ(x)) p+1 t. We have 1 t ˆϕ(x) > 1 t C = 1. Therefore t < 2. Thus ˆϕ(x) f t ± (x) p f t ± (x) p t p ϕ(x) f (x)ˆϕ(x) (f (x)+t ϕ(x) ) (1 t ˆϕ ) p+1 2 p+1 p( ϕ(x) +Cf (x))(f (x)+t ϕ(x) ). The function α(x) = ( ϕ(x) +Cf (x))(f (x)+t ϕ(x) ) is integrable on. Indeed, by Hölder inequality, )1 gdµ 2 (p ( )1 p+1 ( ϕ +f C) p p dµ ((f +t ϕ ) ) q q dµ )1 = 2 (p ( )1 p+1 ( ϕ +f C) p p dµ (f +t ϕ ) p q dµ <, where = 1. Hence, by ebesgue dominated convergence theorem, (5) p q and (4), we have f p t f p lim dµ t + t f p t f p = lim dµ t + t = ±p f (ϕ f ˆϕ)dµ. Hence (3) holds.
ON EXTREA FUNCTION OF A ODUUS OF A FOIATION 7 As a corollary we obtain a formula, firstly proven in [8] using different approach, for p modulus and an extremal function f of a foliation given by the level sets of a submersion. Corollary 4.3. Assume there is an extremal function f for p modulus of F and that essinf f >. If F is given by a submersion Φ : N, then ( (6) f = JΦ 1 )1 ) 1 p p 1 and mod p (F) = (ĴΦ dµ N. JΦ 1 N Proof. By Theorem 4.2 and Fubini theorem (1), for any p integrable function ϕ such that esssup ϕ < and esssup ˆϕ < we have ( ) f ϕdµ = f p ϕdµ dµ ( f p ) = ϕdµ Φ y N JΦ 1 (y) dµ N ( )( f p ) = ϕdµ y N JΦ dµ dµ N ( f p ) = ϕ y N JΦ dµ dµ N ( f p ) = ϕjφ JΦ dµ dµ. Hence ( fϕdµ =, f = f f p ) JΦ JΦ dµ. We will show that f =. Suppose f > on a set A of positive and finite measure. Clearly f < on A. et ϕ be a function on equal to f on A and zero elsewhere. Then ϕ p (), ϕ, esssup ϕ < and esssup ˆϕ <. Since f >, we get = fϕdµ = ff dµ >. Contradiction. Therefore f = and f (7) JΦ = A f p JΦ dµ. Denote the right hand side of above equality by α. Then α is a function on constant on leaves. oreover, (8) f = α 1 (JΦ) 1. Hence, by (7) α = α p (JΦ) 1 dµ.
8. CISKA Therefore α 1 = (JΦ) 1 dµ, so by (8) the firs condition of (6) holds. Again, by Fubini theorem (1) mod p (F) p = f p ) (JΦ 1 p = dµ JΦ 1 (Φ = JΦ p 1 (y) N ) (JΦ 1 p dµ 1 p 1 = (ĴΦ ) dµ N. N 1 dµ ) dµ N By integral formula(4.2) we obtain some results concerning the geometry of a foliation F. Corollary 4.4. et F be a foliation on with closed leaves. Assume that extremal function f for p modulus of F exists and is C 2 smooth and essinf f >. Then the mean curvature H F of distribution F orthogonal to F is of the form (9) H F = ()( (lnf )). In particular, f is constant on leaves of F (hence f = ) if and only if 1ˆ1 distribution F is minimal. Proof. et X beanycompactly supported vector field tangent tof. Denote by div F X the divergence of X with respect to the leaves of F. Then div F X = divx + H F,X. Since for any smooth function f we have div(fx) = fdivx + f,x, then putting ϕ = div F X in (3) we get ( = f (divx)+f H F,X ) dµ ( = div(f X) f,x +f H F,X ) dµ ( = f H F,X ()f p 2 f,x ) dµ = f p 2 f H F () f,x dµ.
ON EXTREA FUNCTION OF A ODUUS OF A FOIATION 9 Taking X = ψ(f H F (p 1) f ), where ψ is a function on with compact support, we get (9). oreover, by (9) F is minimal if and only if f is constant along leaves, hence f = 1ˆ1. Corollary 4.5. et F be a Riemannian foliation on with closed leaves. Assume that extremal function f for p modulus of F exists and is C 2 smooth and essinf f >. Then f is constant on leaves of F. Proof. Follows from the Corollary 4.4 and the fact that the distribution orthogonal to Riemannian foliation is totally geodesic, hence minimal. It appears that extremal function f defines a harmonic measure. Precisely, wesaythatameasureµonariemannianmanifold withafoliation F is F harmonic if F f dµ = for all smooth functions f on, where F f = div F ( f). Corollary 4.6. et be a closed manifold, F a foliation on with closed leaves. Assume there exists an extremal function f for p modulus of F such that essinf f >. Then the measure is F harmonic. µ = f µ Proof. et f be a smooth function on. Putting ϕ = F f in integral formula (4.2), since ˆϕ =, we have = f F f dµ = F f dµ. 5. Examples 5.1. Foliation by spheres. et = {x R n : r 1 < x < r 2 } be a ring. Consider a foliation F by spheres of radii r (r 1,r 2 ). Then F is given, in a spherical coordinates, by a submersion Φ(r,α 1,...,α n 1 ) = r. Thus, an extremal function f for a p modulus of F is, by Corollary 4.3, equal to f (r,α 1,...,α n 1 ) = Cr 1 n, for some positive constant C. Hence f is constant on the leaves of F. oreover, F is Riemannian.
1. CISKA 5.2. Foliation by circles on a torus in R 3. Consider a torus T in R 3 given parametrically (α,β) ((R+rcosα)cosβ,(R+rcosα)sinβ,rsinα) and let F be a foliation on T given by a submersion Φ(α,β) = β. Then F is a foliation by circles of radius r. After some computations we get that extremal function f for p modulus of F is of the form f = C(R+rcosα) 1, for some positive constant C. Hence, by Corollary 4.4, sinα 1 H F = R+rcosαr α, whichisthecurvatureoforthogonalfoliationf ofcirclesofradiir+rcosα in torus T Foliation by a distance function. et be a closed hypersurface in R n. et U be any of two connected complements of R n \. Consider a distance function from, ρ(x) = dist(x, x ), x R n. et F be a family of level sets of ρ. There is a neighborhood of in U, in which ρ is smooth and F is a foliation on, see [6]. oreover ρ = 1 on [5]. By Corollary 4.3 an extremal function for p modulus of F is of the form f (x) = 1 ˆ1(x), hence is constant on the leaves. Clearly F is Riemannian and the orthogonal distribution F is totally geodesic (compare Corollary 4.5). Acknowledgment. This article is based on a part of author s PhD Thesis.
