SANIGA Applie Math-IPICyT, Institut FEMTO-ST, Slovak Astronomical Institute [Mexico-Romania, France, Slovak Republic] quant-ph/ Abstract. This short note highlights the most prominent mathematical problems an physical questions associate with the existence of the maximum sets of mutually unbiase bases MUBs in the Hilbert space of a given imension. Introuction Technical problems in quantum information theory alreay connect such istinct isciplines as number theory, abstract algebra an projective geometry. For a partial list of open problems relate to the evelopment of quantum computing technologies, see In this stimulating research area the issue of the so-calle mutually unbiase bases is an important one since it is relate to the complete state etermination of a quantum system. Definitions an Basic Facts Two ifferent orthonormal bases A an B of a -imensional Hilbert space are calle mutually unbiase if an only if a b = 1/, 1 for all a A an all b B. An aggregate of MUBs is a set of orthonormal bases which are pairwise mutually unbiase. It has been foun that the maximum number of such bases cannot be greater than +1 in -imensional Hilbert space [1]. It is also known that this limit is reache if is a power of a prime. Yet, a still unanswere question is if there are non prime power values of for which this boun is attaine. Base on numerical calculations, it is generally agree [] that in the latter cases the lower boun on the maximum number of such bases is N max = 1+minp ei i, hcr@ipicyt.eu.mx mubg04.tex Status: accepte at AIP Conf. 2 Rosu, Planat, Saniga whereminp ei i isthelowestfactorintheprimenumberecompositionof = i pei i. Whether or not there exists a set of + 1 MUBs in a -imensional Hilbert space if not a power of a prime coul be intimately linke with the question of the existence of projective planes whose orer is not a power of prime accoring to a conjecture that we publishe recently [3]. Another interesting recent result is that when the quantum measurements are performe in MUBs, a simple linear an universal relation exists between the post-measurement ensity matrix an the pre-measurement ensity matrix [4]. The main application of MUBs pertains to secure quantum key exchange quantum cryptography. This is because any attempt by an eavesropper say Eve to istinguish between two non-orthogonal quantum states share by two remote parties say Alice an Bob will occur at the price of introucing a isturbance to the signal, thus revealing the attack, an allowing to reject the corrupte quantum ata. Moern protocols, e.g., the original BB84 protocol, use only one qubit technologies implying imension =, usually the polarisation states of the photon. But the security against eavesropping increases when all the three bases of qubits are use, or by using quits, or entanglement-base protocols. Quantum state recovery an secure quantum key istribution can also be achieve using positive operator value measures POVMs which are symmetric informationally complete SIC-POVMs [5]. These are sets of normalize vectors a an b such that a b = 1/+1 1/ when a b. Unlike the MUBs, the SIC-POVMs coul exist in all finite imensions. Recently, SIC-POVMs have been constructe in imension = 6 [6]. MUB s an Finite Projective Planes As alreay mentione, we have recently conjecture [3] that the existence of the maximum set of MUBs in a given imension an that of a projective plane of the same imension may well represent two aspects of one an the same problem. Perhaps the most serious backing of our surmise is foun in a recent paper by Wootters [7]. Associating a line in a finite geometry with a pure state in the quantum problem, the author shows that a complete set of MUBs is, in some respects, analogous to a finite affine plane, an another kin of quantum measurement, the SIC-POVM, is also analogous to the same configuration, but with the swappe roles of points an lines. It represents no ifficulty to show that this ual view of quantum measurement is eeply roote in our conjecture. To this en, it suffices to recall two facts [8]. First, any affine plane is a particular subplane subgeometry of a projective plane, viz. a plane which arises from the latter if one line, the so-calle line at infinity, is elete. Secon, in a projective plane, there is a perfect uality between points an lines; that means, to every projective plane, S, there exists a ual projective plane, Σ, whose points are the lines of S an whose lines are the points of S [9]. So, affinizing S means eleting a point of Σ an thus, in light of our conjecture, qualitatively recovering the results of Wootters, sheing
3 MUBs: From FPG to QPE 3 also important light on some other of the most recent finings [4,10]. The latter reference, in fact, gives several strong arguments that there are no more than three MUBs in imension six, the latter being the smallest non-prime-power imension. MUB s an Quantum Fourier Transforms QFT s There is a useful relationship between MUBs an QFTs. Consier a basis B 0 = 0, 1,..., 1 with inices n in the ring Z of integers moulo. The ual basis efine by the quantum Fourier transform is θ k = 1 ω nk n, ω = exp i π. In the particular case =, ω = 1 an the θ basis acquires the form θ 0 = ; θ 1 = Note that the two orthogonal bases B 0 = 0, 1 an B 1 = θ 0, θ 1 are mutually unbiase. The thir base B = ψ 0, ψ 1, mutually unbiase to them, is obtaine from H the Haamarmatrixamene bythe actionto the rightofaπ/rotation S H = , S = i HS = 1 1 i 1 i as applie to B 0. The fact that the B bases for = are also the eigenvectors of the Pauli matrices σ z, σ x, an σ y, respectively, has le to a metho of MUBs construction in imension in terms of the generalize Pauli operators X n = n+1, Z n = ω n n, known as shift an clock operators. For a prime imension = p, it can be shown [11] that the eigenvectors of the set of unitary operators Z p,x p,x p Z p,...,x p Zp p 1 generate the corresponing + 1 MUBs. Can MUBs be obtaine for any an any number fiel by Fourier transforms as in the case of =? In principle, the answer is yes. For this, one shoul employ such a quantum Fourier transform whose exponent ω now acts on a finite Galois fiel, G = GFp m, having characteristic p an = p m elements. Denote an the two operations in the fiel, corresponing to + an in the fiel of real numbers. Then, the G-Fourier transform reas θ k = 1 ωp n k n. Given any two polynomials k an n in G, there exists a uniquely etermine pair a an b in G such that k = a n b,
4 4 Rosu, Planat, Saniga where eg a > eg b, so that the exponent in the G-quantum Fourier transform can be written in the form E = n a n b. The last formula is vali for the case of a prime imension = p for which E is an integer. Otherwise, it has to be replace by the trace of GFp m, i.e., a map own to GFp efine as follows an so tre = E +E p +...+E pm 1, E GFp m, θb a = 1 ωp tr[n a n b] n. This general formula was first obtaine by Wootters & Fiels an further insights into it have recently been given [1]. In a Galois fiel of o characteristic, the latter formula provies us with a set of bases of inex a for the base an inex b for the vector in the base, mutually unbiase to each other as well as to the computational base B 0. It is worth noting that this strategy of constructing MUBs fails for characteristic two, since in this case ω tr[n a n b] n = 0, irrespectively of the values of a an b. In this case, one has to use Galois rings instea of Galois fiels in orer to fin MUBs [1,13]. Finally, we notice that the same formula provies an interesting relationship between MUBs an quantum phase operators [14]. Inee, it is known that the Fourier basis θ k can be erive as the set of eigenvectors of a quantum phase operators Θ = k=0 θ k θ k θ k. Thus, viceversa, each base of inex a can be associate to a quantum phase operator of the form Θ a = θb a θa b θa b. b=0 The implementation of the MUB concept at the level of quantum phase kets an operators coul have important technological consequences for efining generalize measurements of the quantum phase, which is a key feature in quantum computing processes. Conclusion This short note highlights only the most prominent mathematical problems an physical questions associate with the existence of the maximum sets of MUBs in the Hilbert space of a given imension. Yet, it shoul give the reaer a fairly goo picture of the state of the art of the topic an why the latter entails steailyincreasing attention of both physicists an mathematicians.
