Operation triggere quantum clock synchronization Jie-Dong Yue, 1 Yu-Ran Zhang, 1 an Heng Fan 1, 1 Beijing National Laboratory for Conense Matter Physics, Institute of Physics, Chinese Acaemy of Sciences, Beijing , China arxiv: v [quant-ph] 14 Nov 014 We present a novel quantum clock synchronization(qcs) scheme of multiple parties which uses operation as the trigger to start the evolution of the initial state, where existing QCS protocols use measurement to start the evolution. Since the trigger is the unitary operation, we have protecte entanglement of remote noes, an after concentration of the qubits to the center noe, general measurements of the total state is possible. We show that our protocol links the QCS problem to a multiple phase estimation problem. We use the Fisher information to give the precision of the synchronization, an explicitly show that the Heisenberg scale of synchronization is achieve in the two party case. We also show that our protocol is very efficient in synchronizing a clock to the average time of other clocks. The precision has an O( ) avantage of the precision of the average time s estimation over the best possible strategy using measurement triggere QCS. The precision is also Heisenberg scale. PACS numbers: 4.50.St, 4.50.Ex, Ta, Introuction. The synchronization of clocks with high precision is require in many moern technologies an researches, such as navigation, istribute computation, long baseline interferometry, tests of theory of general relativity, laser interferometer gravitational wave observation(ligo), an telecommunication. Two stanar methos of clock synchronization are Einstein s synchronization proceure [1], which uses an operational line-ofsight exchange of light pusles between two spatially separate clocks an Eington s slow clock transport [], which is base on the internal time evolution of quantum systems. A quantum algorithm for istribute clock synchronization has been propose by Chuang [3]. A metho of quantum clock synchronization(qcs), which uses share prior entanglement resources to synchronize clocks of two parties, is propose by Jozsa et al [4]. The accuracy of the QCS protocol is inepenent of the participants relative locations an the properties of the intervening meia, which is a major ifference an avantage over the stanar Einstein s an Eington s proceures. The QCS protocol has been generalize to the multiparty case[5], an the synchronization precision using ifferent initial states for the QCS protocol is also stuie [6, 9, 10]. Optimization an limiting issues in the quantum clock literature have been ealt with, with respect to QCS[11 14]. Experimental work has also been one on QCS implementation. A istant clock synchronization(picosecon resolution at 3 km istance) base on entangle photon pairs is reporte[15]. Applying the technique of quantum metrology, it has been shown that the stanar quantum limit 1/ N of the parameter estimation precision, can be improve to the Heisenberg limit 1/N, with entanglement resources employe, where N is the number of particles use in the measurement[16 19]. In the stuy of quantum metrology, quantum Fisher information an quantum Cramér- Rao boun provies a basic approach[0, 1]. The enhancement of the estimation precision to the Heisenberg limit is the main concern of quantum metrology, an a lot work has been one, both theoretically an experimentally[18, 19]. In this letter, we relate the quantum clock synchronization protocol of clocks to a stanar multiple phase estimation problem. We will explicitly show that in the case =, our proceure gives Heisenberg limit of estimating the time ifference. In previous propose protocols of QCS[5, 6, 9, 10], the trigger of evolution is the measurement, after which the entanglement will be broken, an the measurement results at ifferent noes are the useful ata which can be use to calculate the time ifferences, we mention that here only local measurement at ifferent noes is allowe. For our protocol, unitary operations at ifferent noes serve as the triggers of evolution of the states, an after evolution states at ifferent noes will be transferre to the center noe through quantum channels, where a general measurement of the total state will be mae. We show that our proceure is avantageous when only the average time is neee, that is, when we nee synchronize a clock 0 to the average of clocks by calculating θ = t 0 Σ i=1 t i/. This is meaningful when instea of synchronizing the clocks of satellites at various places to set up a stanar time, we can just take the average of these clocks as the stanar time. δ θ, which is the stanar eviation of θ, will have a O( ) avantage in our proposal compare with when only local measurement is allowe. We shoul note that in our meaning of clock synchronization, we o not consier the frequency variance of the clocks, what we are concerne is that the clocks may not agree on a common time at the same reaout, an we are aiming at synchronizing the clocks to a common time. A scheme of a quantum network of clocks has been propose, which combines precision metrology an quantum networks to achieve greater clock stability[7, 8].
Measurement triggere QCS. Krco an Paul have propose the measurement triggere QCS protocol for multiparty clock synchronization[5]. Qubits which have two energy levels are use, labele as 0 an 1, with energy E 0 an E 1 respectively, ω = (E 1 E 0 )/. The protocol starts from an initial W state, which has the form W(N) = 1 ( ). (1) Each noe contains a single qubit. The initial W state is an energy state, so that it remains invariant until measurement is mae. At an agree time, each noe measures its qubit in the basis { +, }, where + = ( 0 +1 )/, = ( 0 1 )/. Since the real time of each noe is not the same, the measurements are mae at ifferent times. Take time t 0 as the stanar time, we focus on the time of noe i. After noe 0 measures its qubit, the measurement result is publishe, which will etermine the results of noe i s measurements. The probabilities of getting + an at noe i are P( ± ) = 1 ± cos(ω(t i t 0 )), () +1 when the measurement result at noe 0 is +. yiels similar result. We see measurements at noe i allow the estimation of t i t 0. Similarly the estimation of other noes times are possible as well. The trigger of this QCS protocol is measurement, which means that measurement starts the evolution of the state. Since qubits are istribute at ifferent noes, only local measurements are allowe. Operation triggere QCS. The framework of our QCS protocol is shown in Fig.[1]. Noes from 1 to are all connecte with the center noe 0. Quantum an classical channels are available for the communication of noe 0 an noe k, k = 1,...,. The process of our clock synchronization scheme is shown in Fig.[]. The process can be ivie into five stages. The first is the preparation stage, an initial state Ψ i is prepare in noe 0. We note that unlike the previous protocols, here the initial state Ψ i is arbitrary. The secon is the istribution stage, qubits are istribute to the noes through the quantum channels, after which each noe contains a certain number of qubits, an they on the whole form the initial state Ψ i. In these two stages, Ψ i is an energy eigenstate such that it will remain invariant. The thir is the triggering stage, the noes make operations on the qubits they have owne, which will trigger the evolvement of the qubits at the noes local times. The evolvement will contain the information of the local times. After all the operations are one, the state stops evolving an becomes invariant. The fourth is the concentration stage, qubits are transmitte back to center noe 0 an after some operations we get the final state noe center noe 0 noe 1 classical channel quantum channel noe k noe FIG. 1: Framework of the operation triggere QCS network. Noes from 1 to are all connecte with the center noe 0. Quantum an classical channels are available for the communication of noe 0 an noe k, k = 1,...,. The soli line stans for the classical channel, an the ashe line stans for the quantum channel. Ψ f, which contains the information of the times of the noes. The fifth stage is the estimation stage, where measurements are mae, after which the time ifferences of the noes an the center noe can be calculate. When the time information is obtaine, it can be transmitte to the other noes through the classical channels. After the istribution stage, we enote the number of qubits noe k owns as n k, k = 0,1,...,, an N = n k is the total number of qubits use in the QCS protocol. We suppose that the initial state Ψ i can be written in the Fock basis as Ψ i = a c a ψ a = a c a N a 0 0 N a 1 1 N a, (3) where c a are coefficients an Na i i are Fock states with Na i qubits in energy level E 1, i = 1,...,. A qubit will evolveuner the unitaryoperatoru = e iĥt, where Ĥ = E E Since we have chosen energy state as the initial state, we have i=0 Ni a = N, for any a, where NE 1 is the energy of the initial state above the groun state. Ψ i will remain invariant. At the triggering stage, every noe from 1 to oes σ x to its part of the total state, when its clock points at a beforehan agree time t 0. We enote the real time of each noe oing the σ x operation as t 1,...,t. Since σ x = , it operates as a NOT gate. We suppose t 1 < t < < t < t 0. We must makesure that t 0 is the biggest, which can be guarantee by purposely elay the time of performing the σ x operation at noe 0. The orer of other times is not important since we can relabel the noes so that the assume is correct, an because all the noes are equivalent to each other, no practical change will happen. Now the real situation is, all the noes perform the

Noes from 1 to are all connecte with the center noe 0. Quantum an classical channels are available for the communication of noe 0 an noe k, k = 1,...,. The soli line stans for the classical channel, an the ashe line stans for the quantum channel. The shae area represents where the qubits are. σ x operation at respective times t 1, t,..., t, t 0. Set t 1 = 0 as the starting time, when t = 0 +, which means the real time has just passe t 1, an noe 1 has just one the σ x operation, while the states of all other noes remain the same, we have ψ a (t = 0 + ) = N0 a n 1 N1 a Na Na. We notice that after noe 1 has one the σ x operation, the total state isn t stationary any more, an starts to evolve with time. So in fact the σ x operation triggers the evolution of the total state. At time t t, which means that the time is infinitely close to t but haven t reache it, we have ψ a (t t ) = e ina 0 ω(t t1) N a 0 0 e i(n1 Na 1 )ω(t t1) n 1 N a 1 1 i= e ina i ω(t t1) N a i i = N a 0 0 e ina 1 ω(t t1) n 1 N a 1 1 i= N a i i, (4) withthe sameglobalphaseomitte forallthestates ψ a. Similarly we have ψ a (t t 3 ) = N a 0 0 e ina 1 ω(t3 t1) n 0 N a 0 0 e ina ω(t3 t) n 1 N a 1 1 i=3 N a i i. (5) When t > t 0, the last σ x operation has been one at noe 0, an the total state stops to evolve, we then have an ψ a (t > t 0 ) = i=1 eina i ω(t0 ti) n i N a i i (6) Ψ i (t > t 0 ) = a c a ψ a (t > t 0 ). (7) Then the triggering stage is over an we enter into the concentraion stage. After all the qubits are concentrate at the center noe 0, we perform the σ x operation to every constituting qubit of Ψ i (t > t 0 ) at noe 0 at the same time an obtain the final state Ψ f = a c a e iωna k (t0 t k) N a k k = e k=1 iωˆn k(t 0 t k ) Ψ i. (8) Ψ i θ 1 θ Ψ f measurement Μ estimator est θ FIG. 3: General scheme for quantum multiple phase estimation. Write θ k = t k t 0, we have Ψ f = e ω k=1 iˆn kθ k Ψ i. (9) Up until now, by estimating θ k, k = 1,,...,, which is a stanar multiple phase estimation problem, we can get information about the time ifferences of clocks at ifferent noes. A general protocol for multiple phase estimation in quantum metrology is shown in Fig.[3]. An initial state Ψ i unergoes the process which epens on the phase vector θ, an evolves into the final state Ψ f. In our QCS protocol the phase vector is the time ifferences of the ifferent noes with the center noe. Then we o measurements to the final states. The measurements are in association with the estimator we choose. From the results of the measurements, we will have an estimation θ est of the phase vector. It has been shown that simultaneous multiple phase estimation has some avantage over estimating the phases one by one, a realistic set-up is also propose[3]. Two party QCS. We next stuy the special case of two party clock synchronization problem, where there are only two clocks to be synchronize, so = 1 in this case. We show that the operation triggere QCS protocol will achieve the Heisenberg scale of the time ifference estimation. For the two party case, we have Ψ f = e ωiˆn1θ1 Ψ i, (10) where θ 1 = t 1 t 0. From the measurement results of Ψ f, we will have an estimate of θ, enote as θ est. The precision of the estimation of θ can be escribe by δθ, where δθ = (θ est θ), the average is taken over all the possible
4 measurement results. The Cramér-Rao equality gives the ultimate precision of the estimation of θ[1][], δθ 1 µfq, (11) where µ is the number of measurements, F Q is calle the quantum Fisher information, when the estimator is unbiase. We further note that for the single parameter case, the equality can be obtaine, such that δθ = 1/ µf Q. Since we are only intereste in the quantum enhancement of the precision, we will set µ = 1, then δθ = 1/ F Q. For pure states, we have F Q = 4[ θ Ψ f θ Ψ f +( θ Ψ f Ψ f ) ]. (1) If we choose the initial state as the NOON state Ψ i = 1 ( 0n + n0 ), where each noe has equal number of qubits an n = N/, we will obtain the maximal quantum Fisher information F Q = 4ω n. Then δθ = 1 ωn = 1 ωn. We see that it is the Heisenberg scale. Average time In many cases, we on t nee to know the times of all the clocks, what we are intereste is the i=k t k average time of the clocks, which is t =. For example, the clocks may be clocks of satellites at various places, instea of synchronizing these clocks to set up a stanar time, we may take the average time of the clocks asthe stanar time. We show that when we want to synchronize the time of noe 0 to t, the operation triggere QCS strategy has an O( ) avantage in precision over the best possible measurement triggere QCS strategy, an we will give explicitly the measurement operator an the estimator. We calculate the stanar eviation of θ, where θ = t t 0. For the operation triggere QCS, we select the initial state as Ψ i = 1 ( n n n ), (13) where n 0 = n, so that it is an energy state an will not evolve. Since n 0 +n = N, we have n = N. The final state is Ψ f = 1 ( n e iω k=1 nθ k 0n n ) = 1 ( n e iωn θ 0n n ). (14) The quantum Fisher information is F Q = (ωn). (15) So we have δ θ opt = 1/ F Q = 1 ωn = 1 Nω, where opt means operation triggere QCS. For the measurement triggere QCS, we consier the best possible precision for the estimation of θ. Since the trigger is the measurement, only local measurement is allowe. There is no efficient way to irectly make an estimation of θ, we can only estimate θ k (k = 1,...,) one by one, an make an estimation of θ from the equation θ = ( k=1 θ k)/. After the instant of noe 0 s measurement, the stationary initial state of all the noes Ψ i, will collapse to a state Φ i, which is not an energy eigenstate, so it begins to evolve. We focus on noe 1, an see what is the best possible precision of θ 1 s estimation. Suppose the collapse state can be written as n 1 Φ i = c k k 1 φ k, (16) where φ i stans for the state of all the other noes, k 1 is Fock state of noe 1 an n 1 c k = 1. After time θ 1, it evolves to n 1 Φ(θ 1 ) = exp( iθ 1 Ĥ j ) c k k 1 φ k. = n 1 j=0 c k e ikωθ1 k 1 φ k, (17) where an global phase omitte, H j is the evolution operator for noe j, an φ k = exp( iθ 1 j 1Ĥj) φ k. The optimal state to achieve the highest estimation precision of θ 1 is Φ opt (θ 1 ) = 1 ( 0 1 +e in1ωθ1 n 1 1 ) φ, (18) where φ is an arbitrary pure state of all the other noes except noe 1. In this way, the states that noe 1 owns is a pure state 1 ( 0 1 +e in1ωθ1 n 1 1 ). Noe 1 can make local measurements of this state to estimate θ 1 an the Fisher information is F Q = n 1 ω. So (δθ 1 ) = 1. n 1 ω Similarly we have (δθ k ) = 1 for k =,...,. n k ω Since θ = ( k=1 θ k)/, we have δ θ = k=1 (δθ k). (19) Inorerto giveanlowerlimit ofδ θ, wefurthersuppose that all qubits are istribute to noe 1 to, an noe 0 has no qubits, in this case when n k = N/,k = 1,,...,, δ θ reaches the minimum δ θ > N ω = Nω. (0) We shoul note that the boun can not be reache, since the optimal state for measuring θ 1 is not the optimal one for measuring other time ifferences, an at least some qubits out of the total N qubits must be istribute to noe 0. We enote this boun as δ θ mea,
5 where mea means measurement triggere QCS. Compare δ θ opt an δ θ mea, we see that the operation triggere QCShasan O( ) avantagein θ s estimationovermeasurementtriggereqcs.infact, thebounδ θ mea isquite loose. The existing measurement triggere QCS protocol provies much worse precision. For the work of [10], the protocol using the simultaneous bipartite entanglement gives the best precision (δθ k ) = 1 4ω ( N N 1 ), (1) if N is big enough, we have (δθ k ) = 1 4, which leas to δ θ = 1 ω. This protocol oes not have the 1 N scale. Conclusion. Clock synchronization is necessary in many moern fiels of science an technologies. Quantum clock synchronization(qcs) uses the power of entanglement to synchronize remote clocks. The avantage of QCS is that the protocol is inepenent of the participants relative locations an the properties of the intervening meia, an the process of istributing entanglement is aiabatic. Existing QCS protocols use measurement as the trigger of starting the state s evolution. However, measurement will break the entanglement an only local measurement is allowe as a result. We propose a novel iea of operation triggere QCS, where we use unitary operation to trigger the evolution of the state. We turn the QCS problem to a stanar quantum metrology problem, which is heavily stuie an many knowlege can be borrowe. The operation triggere QCS makes general measurements of the total state possible. We show that the protocol achieves the Heisenberg scale in the two party case, which breaks the SQL limit. Also we show that our protocol is extremely efficient in estimating the average time. Operation triggere QCS has an O( ) avantage of the precision of the avearge time s estimation over the best possible measurement triggere QCS protocol. The precision is also Heisenberg scale. In conclusion, we have propose a novel QCS scheme, which has the Heisenberg scale of precision an very efficient in estimating the average time.
