1 arxiv: v1 [physics.class-ph] 20 Dec 2017 Demystifying the constancy of the Ermakov-Lewis invariant for a time epenent oscillator T. Pamanabhan IUCAA, Post Bag 4, Ganeshkhin, Pune , Inia. pay@iucaa.in Abstract It is well known that the time epenent harmonic oscillator possesses a conserve quantity, usually calle Ermakov-Lewis invariant. I provie a simple physical interpretation of this invariant as well as a whole family of relate invariants. This interpretation oes not seem to have been notice in the literature before. The proceure also allows one to tackle some key conceptual issues which arise in the stuy of quantum fiels in external, time epenent, backgrouns like in the case of particle prouction in an expaning universe an Schwinger effect. 1 Introuction The time epenent harmonic oscillator(tdho) arises in several physical situations an has been stuie extensively in the past. There are several methos to stuy TDHO, of which the one base on Ermakov-Lewis invariant is quite popular (see, for e.g., Ref. [1]; for a bit of history an references, see Ref. [2]). This invariant can be introuce as follows. Let q(t) satisfy the linear harmonic oscillator equation with a time epenent 1 mass m(t) an frequency ω(t): t (m q)+mω2 q = 0 (1) where the overot enotes ifferentiation with respect to t. Let f(t) be another function which satisfies the non-linear ifferential equation: t (m f)+mω 2 f = Ω2 mf 3 (2) where Ω is a real constant. 2 It is then straightforwar to verify that the following quantity I = 1 [ m 2 ( qf qf) Ω2 q 2 ] f 2 (3) 1 Usually, in the literature, one works with m = 1 since this can always be achieve by a change of the inepenent variable. We shall keep m(t) time epenent for the sake of generality. 2 This constant is usually set to unity in the literature but, as we shall see, it is useful to keep it as a free parameter. 1
2 is conserve. That is, I/t = 0. (The I, with m = 1,Ω = 1 is calle Ermakov-Lewis invariant.) This is the simplest of a family of invariants one can introuce in the stuy of TDHO. The question arises as to whether I has any physical significance an whether its invariance can be unerstoo in a simple manner. I will show that this is inee possible. One can eliminate the time epenence of the oscillator variable q(t) by a suitable transformation an reuce the system to the stuy of another oscillator, Q(t), with constant frequency Ω an unit mass. The energy of the Q oscillator, which of course is conserve, turns out to be the Ermakov-Lewis invariant. I was le to this interpretation of Ermakov-Lewis interpretation while stuying QFT in an external fiel an was motivate to write this note because this approach oes not seem to have been explicitly mentione in the rather extensive literature (though it is might probably be hien implicitly in some of the earlier work), to the best of my knowlege. Moreover, by a slight generalization of this approach, one can iscover a family of invariants obtaine earlier (without any physical interpretation) in Ref. [3]. I will now show how all these can be one, in a fairly straightforwar an simple manner. 2 The Ermakov-Lewis invariant is just the energy Start with the Lagrangian escribing the original TDHO variable q(t) given by L q = 1 2 m(t)[ q 2 ω 2 (t)q 2] (4) an introuce a new ynamical variable Q an a new time coorinate τ through the transformations Q q f(t) ; t mf2 τ (5) where f(t) satisfies Eq. (2). A simple calculation shows that the Lagrangian in Eq. (4) now becomes L Q = 1 [ Q 2 Ω 2 Q 2] + ( 1 f ) 2 τ 2 f Q2 (6) where the prime enotes erivative with respect to τ an Ω 2 is a new frequency which will be a constant if f satisfies Eq. (2). Since the total time erivative in the Lagrangian L Q oes not affect the equations of motion, the Q-oscillator will satisfy 3 the equation Q +Ω 2 Q = 0. For this conservative Q-system, the energy will be a constant an it is given by E = 1 2 (Q 2 +Ω 2 Q 2 ) = 1 [ m 2 ( qf qf) Ω2 q 2 ] f 2 (7) This is precisely the Ermakov-Lewis invariant iscusse so extensively in the literature; it is just the energy of the Q-oscillator! In fact, this approach has a very natural generalization which allows us to fin invariants for ifferent kins of non-linear ifferential equations. Let me briefly illustrate 3 One can irectly verify that Eq. (1) will acquire this form uner the transformations in Eq. (5), though it is obvious from the form of the Lagrangian. 2
3 one possible generalization which which will allow us to provie an interpretation for a result which has appeare in the literature [3] before. Consier a ynamical system with a Lagrangian L Q = (1/2)Q 2 V(Q) an the conserve energy E = (1/2)Q 2 + V(Q). (The system we stuie so far correspons to V(Q) = (1/2)Ω 2 Q 2. We are now generalizing it to an arbitrary potential.) This energy E will, of course, be an invariant in terms of any other set of variables. Introuce a new ynamical variable q = fq an a new time variable τ with mf 2 τ = t, keeping f(t) an arbitrary function of time, at this stage. This will transform the Lagrangian L Q = (1/2)Q 2 V(Q) to the form L q = 1 2 m q2 + 1 q 2 2 f t (m f) V(q/f) mf 2 (8) where ot enotes erivative with respect to t an we have ignore a total time erivative. The ynamical variable q will satisfy the equations of motion arising from this Lagrangian: t (m q) = q f t (m f) V mf 3 (9) where V enotes erivative of V with respect to its argument. We now eman that this equation shoul be ientical to Eq. (1), which, in turn, etermines f to be a solution of the equation t (m f)+mω 2 f = F(q/f) mf 3 (10) where F(Q) = V (Q)/Q is a function of (q/f). The conserve energy of the original system can now be expresse in a form which is precisely the class of invariants foun in Ref. [3] but expresse in our notation: E = 1 2 Q 2 +V = 1 2 m2 ( qf q f) 2 +V = 1 2 m2 ( qf q f) 2 + q F f2q (11) This result can be summarize as follows: Consier a pair of ifferential equations for the two variables f(t),q(t) where f(t) satisfies Eq. (10) which contains an arbitrary function F(q/f) an q(t) satisfies Eq. (1). Such a system has a conserve quantity given by Eq. (11) where V an F are relate by F(Q) = V (Q)/Q. This result shows the power of the Lagrangian base transformation to iscover the invariants to ifferential equations. 3 Discussion The trick of transforming the TDHO to a time inepenent oscillator with constant frequency has several conceptual an practical applications which I will briefly mention here. (These applications will be iscusse in etail elsewhere.) Several problems in quantum fiel theory in external fiels can be reuce to that of TDHO. Two prominent examples are: (i) particle prouction in an expaning cosmological backgroun an (ii) particle prouction in a time epenent electric fiel (Schwinger effect). In both cases, expaning the fiel in terms of Fourier moes exp(ik x) reuces the problem to that of TDHO for each moe labele by k. For example, the stuy of 3
4 a massless scalar fiel in the FRW universe can be reuce to that of a TDHO with m(t) = a 3 (t) an ω(t) = k/a(t) where a(t) is the expansion factor an t is the cosmic time. Similarly the QFT of a charge scalar fiel in a external time-epenent electric fiel E(t) can be reuce to the stuy of a TDHO with unit mass an ω(t) etermine by E(t). One conceptual ifficulty encountere in the stuy of these systems is in efining a natural vacuum state an the notion of a particle in the presence of time-epenent backgroun. Our approach provies a simple solution to this problem. Once the TDHO is transforme to a time inepenent oscillator, we obtain a preferre choice of groun state for Q which can be translate to the q-oscillator. It is straightforwar to relate the quantum ynamics of Q-oscillator to that of the original q-oscillator by elementary algebra. For example, if φ(t,q) is a solution to the Schroinger equation for the Q- oscillator, then the corresponing solution ψ(t, q) to the Schroinger equation satisfie by the q-oscillator is given by: ψ(t,q) = 1 f φ[τ(t),q = (q/f)] exp ( i m f 2f q2 The (1/ f) factor takes care of the proper normalization of the wave function while the extra phase factor arises from the total time erivative term in Eq. (6). This result completely solves the problem of translating the wave function from one system to another in the Schroeinger picture. In the Heisenberg picture, we are usually intereste in the Bogoliubov coefficients relatingthecreationanannihilationoperators(a,a )oftheqoscillatortothose(a,a ) of q oscillators. The relevant Bogoliubov transformation is given by A = α(t)a+β(t)a where: [ α = 1 ( m ) 1/2 f ω + Ω 2 ωω mf 2 i f ] (13) f with time epenent ω(t), m(t) an [ β = 1 ( m ) 1/2 f ω Ω 2 ωω mf 2 +i f ] f If we set the initial frequency ω(t i ) = Ω, then these Bogoliubov coefficients completely etermine the future evolution. All other quantities, like path integral kernel, Green functions, in-out amplitue etc can all be compute in a similar fashion. Thus the proceure allows us to efine a preferre vacuum state in an external time epenent backgroun an calculate all the physical quantities in a simple manner.
