Institute of Poultry Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Yangzhou , China) Abstract: Eleven geographical strains of Eim eria m axim a were tested for their ability to induce p rotection against homologous and heterologous strains, assessed by weight gain, lesion score and reduction in oocyst p roduction. W ith each strain, a single dose of 100 oocysts was sufficient not only to give strong immunity to a heavy challenge ( oocysts), but also to lim it the oocyst p ro2 duction to a very low levels when challenged at a relatively light dose ( oocysts). Eleven strains of E. m axim a were highly immunogenic and no differences existed in immunity to them selves among eleven strains. A single infection with American strain af2 forded 20109% 82144% p rotection against challenges with ten Chinese strains, and the reductions of oocyst output were over 75% against three strains. A single infection with Chinese strain afforded 27143% 95126% p rotection against challenges with American strain, and 75% or more reductions of oocyst output was p roduced by five strains, respectively. The cross2p rotection among Yang2 zhou ( YZ), Nantong (NT), Fengyang ( FY), Longyan (LY), Guangzhou ( GZ) and Shanghai ( SH) strain was % 96167%, and 75% or more cross2p rotection was p roduced by NT against YZ, FY, LY, GZ and SH strain. The cross2p rotection of SH against YZ, NT, FY and GZ strain was % to 57169%.
