2 1.0 INTRODUCTION This report details activities associated with the Regional Monitoring Program for Trace Substances in the San Francisco Estuary (RMP) annual sediment cruise. The cruise was redesigned in 2002 to adopt a randomized sampling strategy in place of the twenty-six base program stations sampled in previous years. 2.0 CRUISE REPORT 2.1 Objectives All sampling was conducted from the R/V Endeavor. The objectives of the sampling effort were to: 1. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for analysis of trace organics by East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). 2. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for analysis of trace elements (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, Ag, and Zn) by the City and County of San Francisco (CCSF). 3. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for analysis of mercury and monomethyl mercury by the University of California at Santa Cruz Department of Environmental Toxicology (UCSC). 4. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for analysis of ancillary parameters (grainsize, TOC, and TN) by UCSC. 5. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for analysis of arsenic and selenium by Brooks Rand Ltd. (BRL). 6. Collect sediment samples from 27 sites for analysis of toxicity by Marine Pollution Studies Laboratory (MPSL). 7. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for trace metals archive. 8. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for trace organics archive. 9. Collect sediment samples from 47 sites for special study oxic layer analysis by San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI). 10. Collect sediment samples and bottom water grabs from 47 sites for special study of microbial communities involved in nitrogen and manganese cycling by the Stanford Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences (SDGES). 7 2.5 Sampling Sites Table 1 shows site coordinates, water depth, substrate description, and additional comments about sampling. 2.6 Sampling Procedures Sediment sampling equipment was cleaned in the laboratory by AMS four days prior to sampling. Equipment that was pre-cleaned included: Van Veen Grab Sample scoops Compositing bucket Wash bottles Prior to sampling, all equipment was thoroughly cleaned. Equipment was soaked (fully immersed) for three days in a 0.5 % solution of Liquinox detergent and deionized water. Following the soak, equipment was rinsed three times each with deionized water, a 1.0 % solution of hydrochloric acid, methanol, and deionized water again. All equipment was then allowed to dry in a clean place. The cleaned grab was wrapped in aluminum foil for transport to the field. All other equipment was stored in clean Ziploc bags until used in the field. The goal of the sampling program design was to collect fine sediments (> 60% fines) at all random sites. At sites where insufficient amounts of fine material were collected, the scheduled sites were replaced with predetermined oversample sites. When the Van Veen grab was brought on deck, overlying water was first allowed to drain off. Next, two measurements of in situ ph were recorded by submerging a Hach ph probe directly into the sediment to approximately 2.5 cm in depth. A total of four measurements were recorded for each station, except station SU002S, for which two ph measurements were recorded. Sediment was removed by sampling personnel from one of the grabs for two special studies prior to any removal of bulk sediment for compositing. Three 10 cc syringe cores were removed from the sediment surface as part of the SDGES special study. One 7.5 cm core was then collected at each site for oxic layer analysis. Sediment coming in contact with the ph and cored areas was avoided when collecting sediments for chemical analysis. Next, the top 5 cm of sediment were scooped from a minimum of two replicate grabs and mixed in a pre-cleaned compositing bucket to provide a single composite sample for each site for analysis of chemistry, TOC, grainsize, and toxicity (where applicable). Portions of the composited sample were placed into containers Page 6

8 provided by each laboratory. Duplicate trace organic and trace element chemistry samples were collected from the composite for archives. The quality of grab samples was ensured by requiring each sample to satisfy a set of criteria concerning the depth of penetration and disturbance of the sediment within the grab. In this way, each sample normally contained the top 5 cm of sediment within the area of the grab jaws. Samples were rejected for the following conditions: A rock or shell fragment wedged between the jaws of the grab allowed the sample to wash out. The sample surface was significantly disturbed. The sample was uneven from side to side, indicating that the grab was tilted when it penetrated the sediment. The surface of the sample was in contact with the top doors of the grab, suggesting over-penetration of the grab and possible loss of material around the doors. Samples were collected from each site and placed into the containers indicated in Table General Comments On-station times generally ranged from minutes, depending mainly on the number of grabs required to collect sufficient sediment. In lieu of porewater ph analyzed in the past, sampling personnel recorded two in situ ph values for a minimum of two grabs at each station, using a Hach ph probe and meter. The value reported for each station is the average of the four results, except station SU002S, for which two ph measurements were recorded. Three scheduled Central Bay random sites were removed from the cruise schedule during planning operations. The three sites, CB015S, CB017S, and CB019S were all located in areas of deep water and strong currents, suggesting difficulty in sampling and little likelihood in obtaining relatively fine sediments. They were replaced prior to the cruise with oversample sites CB075S, CB076S, and CB077S. During the cruise, it was not possible to collect a sediment sample from scheduled sites SPB020S and CB076S due to lack of appropriate substrate (i.e., a lack of fine materials within a 100 m radius of the target coordinates). This sites were replaced with SPB074S and CB078S, the first scheduled oversample sites for these regions of the Bay, without a significant impact upon the cruise schedule. Page 7
