1 Name: 6 th Grade Plate Tectonics Journal Learning standards: E.SE Explain plate tectonic movement and how the lithospheric plates move centimeters each year. E.SE Demonstrate how major geological events (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mountain building) result from these plate motions. E.SE Describe layers of the Earth as a lithosphere (crust and upper mantle), convecting mantle, and dense metallic core. Part 1: Prior Knowledge answer the following questions on your own. Learning target: you will show me what you know about plate tectonics by answering the following questions. This is your knowledge before we start the topic so write down anything you can and don t worry about getting it wrong. 1) What are tectonic plates and what causes them to move? 2) Which natural processes occur as a result of tectonic plate movement? 3) What are three primary types of plate boundaries and what landforms do they cause?
2 Part 2: Interactive Reading: Chapter 4 Section 3 The Theory of Plate Tectonics (complete all of it and complete it on your own). Learning target: introduce the Theory of Plate Tectonics and the vocabulary that we need to help with the understanding of Theory of Plate Tectonics. We will do this by completing the interactive reading and composition book entries. Checkup: After you completed the interactive reading color your light Red Yellow or Green to show your level of understanding of Plate Tectonics. Red = very confused or Yellow= I understand some things but need to do some more learning or Green = I know everything about Plate Tectonics, give me the test. Part 3: Read: All of the paragraphs and misconceptions on the page. Learning Target: What is The Theory of Plate Tectonics? How do the plates move? Discovery Education Website: Course: Michigan Grade 6 Unit: Plate Tectonics Concept: Plate Tectonics Explore tab questions: Watch: Plate Tectonics, How the Inner Structure of Planet Earth Affects Plate Tectonics, Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes, & Boundaries Between Tectonic Plates. Write down two facts about each video in your compo notebook. Make sure you write the title of each video and then the two facts. Checkup: Journal Reflection If you feel that you have enough knowledge at this point in your learning to answer the learning target questions in your own words please do that now. If you do not feel that you have enough knowledge please write not ready yet. You will not be penalized if you are not ready yet we are just assessing our learning. You have more room on the next page to finish your journal reflection
3 Part 4: It Cracks Me Up play. Each group will be assigned a part of the play to master. Once each group has mastered their part we will act out the play. Learning Target: Analyze and interpret plate tectonics by completing your part in the play. Checkup: Your part in the actual play Part 5: Dance of the Plates simulation and worksheet. Learning Target: Describe and what major geological events occur at each boundary and organize the information. DE Website - Explore Explore More Resources Complete the Dance of the Plate simulation in the interact section. There is a worksheet that goes along with this simulation so make sure you complete it. When everyone is finished we will check, fix, modify the chart on the worksheet and transfer is into our composition notebook once we know the information on it is correct. Checkup: The chart completed at the end of the simulation. Part 6: Plate Boundaries Compo Book Entry. As a class use the chart from part 5 to create a compo book entry on Plate Boundaries. Learning Target: Describe and what major geological events occur at each boundary and organize the information. Checkup: with a partner, use your chart to create a clay model of each boundary. Follow the directions on the clay model worksheet and make sure you complete each step.
4 Part 7: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Mountains Learning Target: Demonstrate how major geological events such as earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain building are a result of plate motion.
