4 Review of What We Know The earth s crust is divided into plates, and these plates move (that s why Pangaea broke apart) l What is some evidence for Pangaea? 5 There are Two Types of Plates Oceanic plates l Oceanic plates are thinner and more dense l They are made up of basalt, a dark (black) and very dense rock type composed of silicates, iron and magnesium Continental plates l Continental plates are thicker and less dense l They are made up of granite and andesite, light colored (pink, white and gray) and less density rock types composed almost entirely of silicates.
