5 5 General Information Objectives & Achievements Unit Description Throughout the year 2009 the strategic decision-making in CIMA was based on regular (10) meetings of the scientific commission complemented by current affair management assured by the coordination. More specific subjects were discussed and decisions taken in Research Groups organized around the 4 main Research Objectives (RO's). In November the Scientific commission elected Tomasz Boski as the coordinator of CIMA for another 3 years term. It was decided also that executive committee composed by the general coordinator and the leaders of 4 Research Objectives would assure the scientific management of the unit. The plenary meetings of the Centre are organized trimestrialy. After a long period of internal discussions and negotiations with the hosting institution, a very important moment occurred in the life of Centre, which was the occupation of new laboratory facilities in Gambelas, concluded in May The internal scientific discussion and exchange of information were promoted during CIMA advanced seminars - 18 organized throughout the past year. Year 2009 was the first in which CIMA received a lower annual financing, according to the result of evaluation good for the period CIMA did not accept the result of the evaluation and asked for re-evaluation. To our disappointment and surprise the arguments presented (mostly in quantitative form) were not answered. According to the chairman of the evaluation panel the decision of not changing the original notation was taken by the unanimous decision of majority of the evaluation panel. We considered that such a statement had not been serious. Following this answer, several members of 2 research groups which, during the triennial evaluation received the notation good decided to quit CIMA. General Objectives CIMA has 4 general objectives: I - research, II - training, III - editing of digital application and IV - expert services I. RESEARCH 4 research objectives (RO s) are defined together with 14 associated tasks/lines: 1) MARINE PROCESSES Description of the dynamics of water masses and currents in the Atlantic Ocean off the S. Iberia combined with chemical characterization is seen as necessary condition for a proper assessment of primary productivity of shelf waters. The approach to these phenomena is based on both modeling and observation. a) Models and measurements of transfer phenomena in the ocean, b) Chemical dynamics in the ocean, c) Marine microbial dynamics and foodwebs.

6 6 2) MARINE MORPHOSEDIMENTARY PROCESSES The research objective on marine morphosedimentary processes mainly focuses on the quantitative approach to the processes shaping the forms and/or position of continental shelf and coasts along the S. Iberian margin. These geological processes are controlled by natural phenomena and by human activities responsible for changes of the sea level and sediment supply from the continent. That multi-scale approach to the analysis will imply the bridging between geological, biological, physical and socioeconomic processes. For the purpose of ICZM the inter disciplinarity is effectively implemented through model based systemic approach. a) Shelf sedimentary dynamics, b) Coastal dynamics, c) Science and policy integration for ICZM. 3) LARGE SCALE GEOLOGICAL PROCESSES AND THEIR LOCAL RECORD This thematic objective embraces geophysical geochemical and geological approach to the processes acting within the lithosphere, the climatic system and the marine sedimentary environment. The methodology applied is based mostly on modeling and on the interpretation of sedimentary record/proxies. The time-scale of the modeled/interpreted processes range is very broad. a) Sea-level and climate change, b) Numerical modeling of lithospheric processes, c) Marine & Coastal geochemical processes and the fate of OM. 4) IMPACTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES The combined physical and chemical drivers of natural and anthropogenicaly induced change are affecting the quality of human live. The measurement of the extent of different pressures, their indexation, their effects and remediation are pivotal for this objective. The research is thus carried out along 5 topical lines: a) Impacts on human health, b) Eutrophication and rehabilitation methods, c) Impacts of emerging contaminants, d) Development of new biomarkers and indexes in risk management, e) Harmful algal blooms. II. ADVANCED, mostly at II and III academic level - The EU Erasmus Mundus MSc course on Coast and Water Management - EMAC MSc in Marine and Coastal Studies - Training activities at MSc level in other research units/countries III. Edition of digital applications and books - improving the existing applications MIRONE and GUADID, MONDID - New applications (Tropical coastal ecosystem MANDID and Ria Formoza - FORDID) - VI volume of a series of books on Ria Formosa ecology IV. 7 7 - transfer of R&D results to the governance and coastal stakeholder groups - analytical services : bacteriology, XRD analysis, erosion assessment Main Achievements during the year of 2009 The reported year saw increase in terms of overall of scientific productivity: 50 SCI contracting the remaining 3 researchers will be overcome in CIMP'Faro09 and quoted papers, start-up of 7 newly VII REQUI international meetings were approved R&D projects, organization of 2 scientific meetings of international level, growing internationalization of research and continuation of advanced training. The new laboratory facilities became fully operational and permitted accommodation highly appreciated by tens of our foreign colleagues. The 6FP SPICOSA project local team work was very highly prized and the Guadiana study site was considered as one of 5 model system approach cases. Thanks to the efforts of RO II team (Marine of CIMA staff in one building, opening way Morfosedimentary Processes) the to the new synergies and collaborations. Especially positive was the transfer of Olhão CIACOMAR laboratories to the new Gambelas facilities. In terms of human multisensory buoy SIMPATICO remained fully operational for almost entire period and the first acquired datasets were interpreted and internationally published. potential development, the Centre In terms of internationally published integrated new 9 BII grants and contracted third post-doc level researcher in the framework of CIENCIA 2007 program. We articles, the Objective IV - IMPACTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES revealed the highest productivity in CIMA. hope that the institutional deadlock in Activities Integrative/multidisciplinary activities during the year of 2009 The activities within CIMA which help to create a true added value based on the integration of nearly 100 individuals took several forms throughout the reported year: a) - CIMA Advanced Seminars ( ) during 2009, 18 sessions were organized in which the average participation was about 30 persons. The topics presented by local and invited researchers embraced a very broad thematic spectrum and very frequently led to lively/hot discussions. b) - Formulation and execution of projects based on sharing of complementary technical knowhow and on sharing of common facilities (laboratories, small boats and library), equipment and full secretarial support. Indeed the elaboration of successful project proposals and the subsequent execution of these projects involved researchers and technicians from up to 3 RO's of CIMA. The modeling know-how, currently is probably the most interdisciplinary and unifying skill. Laser granulometer, lyophilizer, microscopes, GPS and several instruments used in chemical analysis are the most commonly shared equipments. The EU VI FP SPICOSA Project is probably the most emblematic example of the actually implemented interdisciplinarity. CIMA group composed of 4 young researchers backed by senior reserchers developed a truly interdisciplinary systemic model of Guadiana Estuary - study site11 in EU.

8 8 c) - CIMA and CIEO - Centro de Investigação Sobre o Espaço e as Organizações decided to move closer in order to associate the environmental research with socioeconomic research. For that purpose two joint sessions were organized and cross participation in seminars took place d) - Several newly proposed projects involved archaeologists and historians namely from CEPESE - Centre for the Study of Population, Economy and Society in Oporto. This initiative are an important sign of recognition that human activities acted as a significant environment impacting factor in a much longer time-scale that is usually thought, i.e. throughout millennia before present. Outreach activities during the year of Outreach activities during the year of 2009 (3000 ca.) Science and Society/general public/schools, etc. There is a growing perception among the researchers about the need of maintaining closer links with society and with the educational sector in particular. Several initiatives aiming at the transfer of academic knowledge to the public domain took place in diverse forms: a) - Promotion of marine & environmental science in secondary schools and through open learning; CIMA is maintaining close links with several regional schools and sign the cooperation agreements with them. As a result, the pupils from these schools initiate their research in CIMA labs and CIMA researchers deliver thematic seminars in these schools. The most successful cooperation was developed with Loulé secondary school. Several seminars were also organized in Ciência Viva Centre in Tavira. Moreover during the open week at Universidade do Algarve CIMA research laboratories involved the pupils in hands-on activities. Within the framework of open learning actions like Holiday geology guided tours in the environmentally sensible sites like the Ria Formosa Barrier Islands or Guadiana River Estuaries. b) - Participation in regional events promoting marine and environmental activities; every year CIMA maintained its own stands in annual fairs like EXPOMAR (Olhão). The continuing presentation of the miniature models of physical phenomena and geological features like for instance internal waves, coastal aquifers, luminescent sands coastal barriers and live microscope identification of microfauna and minerals in marine sediments were very successful sessions and attracted wide public interest. c) - Development of multimedia applications for education; MIRONE an educational Windows MATLAB-based framework tool that allows the display and manipulation of a large number of grid/images providing the end-users with an easy-to-use graphical interface became an adopted educational tool in several local schools. GUADID and MONDID the educational Macromedia - Flash applications intended to support natural science teaching at school level and ecology teaching at undergraduate level became well established resources in several schools and at UALG.

PTDC/AAC-CLI/103348/2008) Whole-system metabolism and CO2 fluxes in a coastal lagoon dominated by saltmarsh and seagrass meadows Objectives & Achievements Objectives Chemical Characterization of the main Oceanographic processes in the South Portuguese Coast and in the Gulf of Cadiz (A. Cravo) Main objectives of the marine microbial ecology group (A. Barbosa, H. Galvão, R. Domingues, T. Anselmo) have been in terms of projects goals in the last 6-7 years: a) Ecotoxicolgy: - environmental factors which determine cyanobacteria predominance in rivers and estuaries - cyanotoxin occurrence and fractionation in natural waters - impact of predation and viral lysis on cyanotoxin biodegradation b) Microbial dynamics off the Southern Portuguese Coast

12 12 - coupling between bacterioplancton and phytoplankton processes - trophic status relative to heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass and production - microbial variability under different hydrodynamic regimes (upwelling, river plumes, coastal counter-currents) Main objective in Physical Oceanography are to Improve the knowledge about the hydrodynamics and sediment transport in coastal areas and estuaries: field studies; mathematical and numerical modelling of flows, suspended sediment and bed-load transports and bed-form dynamics; dynamics and climate of waves in coastal areas; tidal inlet dynamics and mass exchange between coastal lagoons and the ocean (J. Jacob). Main Achievements Chemical Oceanographic characterization of South Portuguese Coast and in the Gulf of Cadiz including: i) Subsurface processes: Upwelling, coastal countercurrents, Variation of CO2 and Alcalinity in the Gulf of Cadiz and ii) at deep levels, the influence of the Mediterranean Water (A. Cravo) Main achievements of the marine microbial ecology group has been to pursue a continuous monitoring program ( ) in the Guadiana estuary with respect to micial dynamics and cyanobacteria blooms and associated toxins. This database was analysed and will be published in 2010 as a long-term series analysis of phytoplankton, namely Environmental forcing of phytoplankton in a Mediterranean estuary (Guadiana Estuary, southwestern Iberia): a decadal study of anthropogenic and climatic influences. Barbosa A.B, Domingues R.B, Galvão H.M. Estuaries and Coasts (in press). Another achievement was the collection of an extensive microbial data base during several cruises along the Southern Coast of Portugal which are now being analysed for future publication. Main achievements in Physical Oceanography was to study the net mass exchange and dynamics of nutrients, chlorophyll-a and particulate matter between Formosa lagoon (south of Portugal) and the ocean, through the Ancão inlet, as a function of hydrodynamic, meteorological and other environmental conditions: two in 2007 under neap and spring tide conditions and the other in 2009 under spring tide conditions. Preliminary results were presented in the XIV Seminario Ibérico de Química Marina in September 2008 and the results of the third campaign were presented at the XV Seminario Ibérico de Química Marina in February Another important result was to characterize the dynamics and the climate of waves in coastal areas implementing the phase averaging spectral wave propagation model SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore). The SWAN model was used to study and characterize the wave climate in the nearshore region of the Tróia-Sines embayed coast (TSEC) (southwest of Portugal) during and between storm events. The SWAN model was also applied to study the erosion of the rocky coast of the Algarve (south of Portugal) under the influence of the waves. A paper was published, another was submitted, two are in preparation, a poster was presented at the ICS2009 in April 2009 and two presentations, one oral and a poster, will be made at the ICCCM10 in April 2010.

EU 6th SPICOSAFP : Science and policy integration for coastal systems assessment Budget (Total/UALG-CIMA): ,00. Objectives & Achievements Objectives To improve knowledge about the complex interactions between variables controlling rocky coasts evolution, among them, wave climate, lithology, freshwater discharge, morphological inheritance and bioerosion; To quantify coastal cliffs erosion in the centre Algarve since the Last Glacial Maximum; To quantify vertical erosion produced by borer organisms into shore platforms. To define the morphological evolution of backbarrier beaches at medium-term scale (months to years) and their association to forcing agents.

21 21 To understand the role of nearshore morphology in overwash occurrence and overwash threshold conditions and sediment dynamics in gravel barriers. Definition of a threshold for morphological changes as a function of wave height on a sandy exposed beach; Establish the present and past hydrodynamics and sediment transport at a multiple inlet system (Ria Formosa, Portugal) Development of video monitoring systems for coastal dynamics Review the hydrodynamics prevailing at the Guadiana estuary before dam closure and to compare pre- and post-dam periods. Study of overwash regime at Praia de Faro (Ria Formosa, Algarve). Definition of the patterns of sediment transport (rates and constrains) in a low energy beach between spring-neap tides. Analysis of morphodynamic behaviour and evaluation of planform stability and evolution of embayed beaches in Southern Portugal Develop the analysis of sediments isotopic composition, to determine paleotemperature and paleoproductivity changes in the continental shelf associated to the Holocene environmental changes. Investigate the paleoenvironmental changes occurred in the continental shelf off Guadiana River, in three distinct areas of sedimentary deposition, associated with climatic and antrophic impact. Provide analytical and modelling tools for the implementation of ICZM Main Achievements Rocks mechanical strength, lithological facies variation, bio and chemokarst are the first order factors on the centre Algarve rocky coast evolution. Shore platforms are protective structures against waves assailing onto the cliffs foot by reducing waves energy. However, this protective role was only observed to incoming waves higher than 1.00m, whereas to the lowest ones, shore platforms are ineffective. Bioerosion was responsible for vertical erosion up to 2.00mm/yr. A new method for hazard assessment on rocky coasts was developed an applied to the Algarve. Storm risk assessment in Europe is not uniform between studied countries (MICORE project) and general common guidelines should be made available. Real time warning systems for storm impacts do not exist at an European level, with few exceptions. Overwash vulnerability methods were developed and applied to the Ria Formosa. A summary of the factors leading to overwash formation and destruction was

22 22 made with worldwide potential application. SIMPATICO system (an autonomous monitoring system) data was used to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of Guadiana estuary. A synthesis of the historical hydrodynamic behavior of Guadiana estuary was also determined. The inner shelf paleoenvironmental (Holocene) evolution in the vicinity of the Guadiana River was established and land/ocean interactions deducted. The hydrodynamics and potential equilibrium of a Multiple-Inlet System was observed taking as baseline the Ria Formosa system. Multi-inlets can co-exist if the inlets dominate over a water body with limited contact. The hydrochemical and economic modules of SAF Guadiana model became operational. An intesive course on Participatory Methods was oreganized. Group Productivity Publications in peer review Journals Carrasco, A.R., Ferreira, Ó., Freire, P., Dias, J.A. (2009).
