TexNet Goals To monitor, locate, and catalog seismicity across Texas, capable of detecting and locating earthquakes with magnitudes M2.0 To improve investigations of ongoing sequences by deploying temporary seismic monitoring stations and conducting site-specific assessments, especially for Events >M3.0 in or near urban areas, or Events co-located where ongoing human activities may be related to earthquake activity

Challenges Texas is Diverse 12+ distinct tectonic areas Anadarko Basin Amarillo Uplift Palo Duro Arch Midland Basin Delaware Basin Trans-Pecos/Marathon Val Verde Gulf Coast Talco/Mexia/Balcones East Texas Basin Sabine Uplift Ft Worth Basin Llano/Bend Arch Many known fault systems that are poorly constrained in the subsurface

Seismicity and Industry Activity Study Areas Seismicity with oil & gas activity: Ft. Worth Basin (FW), Permian Basin (PB) and Cogdell Field (C), Eagle Ford play area (EF), North East Texas (NE) Seismicity with limited oil & gas activity: Southwest Texas (SW) Oil & gas activity with no seismicity: Southeast Texas (SE) Mixture of the above: Texas Panhandle (PH) PH PB C SW EF FW SE NE 6

Stakeholder Value Seismicity Placement of Portable Seismic Network Stakeholder Value: perceived value of data acquisition, alignment with social and/or economic drivers, guidance from the TexNet TAC Scientific Value: degree that data acquisition supports specific or future research activities using testable hypotheses and/or provides important data for future research Seismicity: natural and potentially induced (as from Frohlich et al., 2016) Injection/Disposal Activity: general or change in the activity of historical injection Study Areas Value Ranking FW Study Areas Seismicity & Disposal Activity FW qualitative factors will become quantitative with time PH C PB NE PB C PB SW FW SE EF EF NE PH EF PH NE SE SW C SW SE Immediate Scientific Value Injection/Disposal Activity 7

Portable Station Deployment Plan Permian Basin stations near Pecos - 9 at Cogdell Field near Pecos and elsewhere PH C Ft Worth Basin stations to be adjusted depending on seismicity trends and availability of other sensors UT-BEG rapid deployment reserve stations stations (other deployed portable stations can be repositioned to augment rapid deployment reserve) PB SW EF FW SE NE Northeast Texas stations stations Eagle Ford near Fashing near Fashing and elsewhere 8

CISR: Leveraging State Funds Center for Integrated Seismicity Research CISR will conduct fundamental and applied research to better understand naturally occurring and potentially induced seismicity and the associated risks, and to discern strategies for communicating with stakeholders and responding to public concerns regarding seismicity. Total = $5.37MM IA* 21% State 79% Public and Educators Government and Regulators Academia Industry

CISR: Expanding TexNet s Goals Improved fluid management and risking operations Assessment of basin seismogenic potential Improved assessment of seismic hazard to infrastructure Establishment of an appropriate response management facility Improved vehicles for communication of data, knowledge and risk to a variety of stakeholders

Current Status Nanometrics (Ontario, Canada) awarded contract after public bidding process. Final hardware delivery expected by the mid September. We have identified provisional locations for permanent and auxiliary seismometers. Site visits and 24h noise surveys are finalized. We have identified station locations for 12 portable stations in FWB. Current expectation is for system to be operational and to begin streaming data by September Big issue identifying landowners and securing lease agreements. Research through TexNet and CISR is funded and ongoing.
