2 Introduction After research and observations, Team 6B was excited to learn about sustaining life on Mars. Specifically, we were interested in learning about evidence of oxygen. Scientific Question: Is there evidence of oxygen in canyon layers? Hypothesis: If there is a presence of hematite and magnetite in canyon layers, then there may be evidence of oxygen on Mars.
3 What is a canyon? A canyon is a very deep ravine, between cliffs, and it is normally formed by the erosion of river beds. Canyons are also mostly found in arid (dry) areas, rarely in wet areas. Canyons on Earth are also found in oceans. Canyons, are mostly made of eroded soil, rocks, and limestone. The soil is very rocky and stepped on the edges. Cliffs on either side of a canyon are made of harder rock, but the area that has been worn away tends to be of a softer rock which is easily weathered by sand storms, and also by wind.
4 Canyon Characteristics The characteristics are: A canyon is a past riverbed that has aged over time and has been dehydrated. Sometimes you can not tell that it was a past riverbed, other times you can tell right away. Canyons are very steep and rocky. 5 How Are Canyons Formed? Rivers erode land as they flow picking up sediments. Eventually they carve into land creating canyons. Sometimes the water will dry up or it is still flowing today. Image provided by kidsnewsroom.org Image provided by: whatafy.com

8 D.U.D. E. Deposition The wind has torn this rock and deposited it somewhere else. Uplifted Over time the ground has been pushed up into step-like features. 9 How are canyon formations on Earth different than on Mars? Mars has no source of water so far but, Earth has a source of water flowing through the canyon. Earth has grass and trees around it, and Mars is plantless. Earth canyons have different shapes of rocks but, Mars has a flat surface. Mars canyons are deep and long. 12 Inspirational Images This picture is in black and white but is an inspirational image for us. This canyon has many layers so it is inspirational for our question. This image is inspirational for our big picture question because it shows Mars and its atmosphere over canyons and gullies. 13 Inspirational Images This picture has colorful layers and many of them. That is why it is AN inspirational image for this project. These canyons could contain oxygen in them. Valles Marineris is the longest canyon on mars. it has deep trenches and could have oxygen in it. This is a picture of the blue canyon. It may not look like it is on Mars, but it is on one of its ice caps. Hebes chasma could have oxygen
14 Experimental Design Tools : We will use HiRISE camera in addition to THEMIS because we need a high resolution to see the details of the layers in the canyon.
15 Location of Data Collection Location: Valles Marineris is located -10N 290E. Fact: Valles Marineris is named after NASA's Mariner 9. We chose Valles Marineris because it has lots of canyon layers. static.mars.asu.edu

17 Conclusion Scientific Question: Is there evidence of oxygen in canyon layers? Hypothesis: If there is a presence of hematite and magnetite in canyon layers, then there may be evidence of oxygen on Mars. We think you should accept this proposal because Mars scientists are still researching the idea of oxygen on Mars. The Themis and Hi-Rise cameras will provide us the tools we need to research our question.
