3 PROGRAM A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN We are privileged to host the yearly National Geoscience Conference (NGC), the annual congregation of geoscientists and other researchers. NGC provides an excellent platform to the geologists, students, relevant organizations and companies to discuss the ideas of current scenario of geoscience in Malaysia. The NGC 2015 in conjunction with Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Mineral and Geoscience Department Malaysia (JMG), and Perbadanan Menteri Besar Kelantan (PMBK) has strengthened the event to be a premier gathering of researchers, academicians, and NGO s. The joint scientific committee has decided Kelantan as a venue for conference due its mineral exploration and traditional geo heritage culture. The theme of NGC 2015 is Geoscience for Societal Benefits and Development of the Nation. The challenges of the 21st Century are numerous and multifarious. While we are now assuring a sustained industrial growth for creation of employment but this has to be synchronized with environmental issues. Natural resources (coal, fossil fuels and minerals) are gradually getting depleted without significant additions of new discoveries. The provision of safe drinking water to every household is a big challenge that most of the developing and underdeveloped countries are facing. Natural hazards continue to be in the domain of unpredictability and hazards caused due to anthropogenic influences are becoming more and more frequent. Geoscience can play an important role practically to address these issues. It had always been playing a role in the societal benefits and the development of nation. Now it is the time for geoscientists need to be more innovative rather than peripheral and conventional. So, I encourage all participants of conference to do their best to achieve the set goal of this conference. On behalf of the Conference Committee, I am honored to announce the acceptance of 110 technical papers from various fields of geoscience for oral and poster presentation along with undergraduate poster competition. The NGC 15 creates a distinctive opportunity for the Malaysian geoscientists to get together for scientific discussion and sharing solutions to issues related geoscience. With increasing annual attendance of scientists, academicians and students, the NGC has proved its strength over the recent years. It has been successfully held and rotated in different states of Malaysia. The NGC 2015 will commence with two day presentation session on 31 Ist July- I st August, with simultaneous poster presentation sessions. The post NGC field trip will be arranged to flood affected areas of Kelantan on 2 nd of August Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the NGC 2015 organizing and all program committee for spending their valuable time to bring the NGC 2015 to great success.
