Preamble This is the full report describing the activities of CEFT in the period , without the constraints imposed by the forms of FCT. Although CEFT has its activities organized in three subgroups ((1) Energy, (2) Multiphase Flows and Separation Processes and (3) Non-Newtonian Fuid Mechanics and Microfluidics), for reasons of management flexibility and efficiency it submitted its FCT report as a single group, which indeed reflects its informal managements structure. However, in this global report we make the separation to better illustrate the scope of our activities. While doing this exercise, we often faced difficulties in deciding how to split our activities among the three groups, which in itself proves the good degree of integration among the researchers and groups. On hindsight, we have to admit that our decision to submit the FCT report as that of a single group was correct and is not only rooted on the flexibility and efficiency issues mentioned, but truly reflects the way we work. For reasons of confidentiality, and given its free availability, this report does not expose the strategy of CEFT for the period , which is exclusively contained within the FCT report. However, it already contains results of our activities in Identification 1.1 Name of Research Unit: CEFT- Centro de Estudos de Fenómenos de Transporte Transport Phenomena Research Center 1.2 Scientific Domains: Main domain: Mechanical Engineering Other domains: Chemical Engineering, Energy, Transport Phenomena, Microfluidics 5

2. Host Institution Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto Rua Dr. Roberto Frias s/n Porto Portugal Tel: Fax: ceft@fe.up.pt Web address: No other Institutions are involved 3. Group organization and objectives 3.1 Unit description: form of organization and management CEFT is a research unit focusing on the subdomain of transport phenomena bridging the main areas of chemical and mechanical engineering. Since its inception in 1996, it has grown steadily, but sustainably, into a medium sized unit with an informal governance system that potentiates and promotes independent research and enhances creativity. Its senior members stimulate the activities of the whole group in essentially three major subgroups: (1) Energy; (2) Multiphase flows and membrane separation processes; (3) Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics and microfluidics. The vocation of CEFT lies essentially on fundamental research, in which it has achieved significant success. Nevertheless, some of its research has a more applied tendency, especially in the energy area and in some of the activities developed in computational rheology (non-newtonian fluid mechanics and microfluidics) Even though its activities span the above-mentioned major topics, given its size and especially the excellent personal relationship among its members, the unit presents itself to FCT as a single group for maximum management flexibility and efficiency. However, in 6

this extended activity report we describe in detail the activities of CEFT separated by the three subgroups to make clear the full breadth of our activities and the extent of the subgroups. The whole group meets regularly when necessary, but the main meetings between the senior members, and some juniors, take place almost daily at lunchtime contributing to the informal and relaxed management structure. Discussions and decisions concerning projects are wide and normally consensual among the members involved, with the unit leader usually having a minimal interference. The dimension of the group is compatible with the efficient administrative and advice staff that FEUP provides to its members. 3.2 General Objectives of CEFT As member of one of the two leading Portuguese universities in engineering, CEFT aims to contribute decisively to increase knowledge and understanding in transport phenomena, foremost on a fundamental level, where universities play the essential role in a modern society. However, CEFT also contributes to applied research of relevance to industry and associated technology development laboratories. CEFT also aims to train new researchers of international quality level for science and engineering and it has been actively engaged in several post-graduate programmes at FEUP. In 1999 it has created an MSc on Fundamentals and Applications of Fluid Mechanics, together with the Hydraulics Lab and Research centre at FEUP, and its academic members run several courses in other MSc programmes, such as the Mechanical Engineering MSc specialized on Energy and the Chemical Engineering MSc. Over the years, the members of CEFT have also supervised several PhDs, who work today in industry and academia. With a sustainable growth since its creation, CEFT aims at medium term to become a reputed international research centre. It will continue to contribute decisively to fundamental research and development. In the medium term, as the group grows (in the number of integrated PhDs), it will widen its scope to include more development of products of high technological content. This can benefit from the industrial experience of 7

one of its senior members, as well as experience by three senior members who have worked in the past in applied research at INEGI, an institute interfacing university and industry. Research at CEFT was carried out in three major areas: (1) energy, (2) membrane separation processes and multiphase flows and (3) non-newtonian fluid mechanics and microfluidics. Work in these three areas will continue, but with an emphasis given to modern research topics. 4. Simultaneously, developments continued to improve its capability to predict industrially relevant flows, such as the furthering of optimization methods to design extrusion dies. Numerical and experimental research also continued to investigate fundamental flows of non-newtonian fluids aimed at increasing our understanding of these fluids and at providing high quality benchmark data. In 2004 we initiated research on micro fluid mechanics by sending a post-doc to MIT for training on experimental techniques (M. S. N. Oliveira), we started numerical calculations of microscale flows and began investing on adequate equipment in order to enable us to become independent by the beginning of On turbulence modeling for non-newtonian fluids the group developed several closures based on a toy constitutive equation, and used it to predict experimental data. At the 15

moment it is implementing this model into a 3D code so that more complex turbulent flows can be predicted. Simultaneously, we moved further and adopted a truly viscoelastic model, the FENE-P equation, to start again the effort of developing a new set of turbulence closures. This enables us to use DNS data from our partners at Washington University in St. Louis, led by Professor R. Sureshkumar, and we also collaborate on this topic with Professor Bassam Younis from the University of California at Davis, a world expert on RANS models. In 2004 MA Alves obtained his PhD and he started to carry out his independent research in the field, while collaborating also with F. T. Pinho and other researchers. He has been able to bring new life to the experimental research on non-newtonian fluid mechanics, especially since the arrival of the new equipment. It is expected that over the next period of activity, this group will see a much higher level of activity, since we are also counting on the participation of several new post-docs, some of which are already with us, but also new researchers to be hired in late 2007 and early Main achievements - Development of finite volume (FV) numerical methods for the accurate prediction of viscoelastic fluid flows; - Developments in viscoelastic finite volume code for improved iterative convergence and more accurate results: CUBISTA, more constitutive equations (PTT, Giesekus, FENE-P), second order time discretization; - Continuous development of codes, based on FV, for the design and optimization of extrusion dies for the plastics industry taking into account the non-newtonian fluid behaviour; - Optimization of extrusion dies including thermal effects; - Numerical investigation of creeping flows to establish benchmark data sets: 2D contraction and cylinder flows; - Experimental characterization of fundamental flow problems in non-newtonian fluid mechanics at low and high Reynolds numbers: pipe flows, annular flows, contraction and expansion flows, flows around cylinders; 16
