4 NEW CRUST: ORIGINS IGNEOUS ROCK: CLASS NOTES Comment [SK2]: rock formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava **igneous comes fr om a Latin w or d ignis which means fir e.** There are three ways magma can form: Comment [SK3]: decrease pressure: Very high pressures in mantle rocks prevent atoms within minerals from breaking chemical bonds and moving freely from one another to form a magma. However, if pressure on mantle rock is decreased the atoms may move freely from one another, resulting in partial melting of the rock. Increase Temp:, not all minerals melt at the same temperature. Composition: Minerals with high Si content (e.g. quartz) melt at lower temperatures than minerals with low Si content (e.g. olivine). All igneous rocks begin as Lava is the crust Magma is the crust Comment [SK4]: Molten rock Comment [SK5]: Above below Comment [SK6]: solidifies Comment [SK7]: water When magma or lava cools enough, it to form igneous rocks. It s similar to freezing. W ater freezes, or becomes a solid at 0 C (32F) Magma solidifies between 700 C and 1,250 C. ( F ) 4
5 COMPOSITION OF IGNEOUS ROCK Igneous rocks can be classified by the elements found in the molten rock that made them. FELSIC: Comment [SK8]: Mostly silicate minerals Comment [SK9]: r ocks with a high am ount of silica Lighter-colored Common felsic rocks include Comment [SK10]: granite, rhyolite, quartz, granite MAFIC: Darker-colored Common mafic rocks include Comment [SK11]: rock with lower silica and high iron/magnesium Comment [SK12]: basalt gabbro, Comment [SK13]: have class annotate felsic intermediate mafic coausre/intrusive down to fine/intrusive TEXTURE OF IGNEOUS ROCK The longer it takes for the magma or lava to cool, the more time have to grow. Comment [SK14]: crystals COARSE GRAIN: Cooling is "slow"; usually occurs FINE GRAIN: Cooling is "fast"; usually occurs Comment [SK15]: m inerals are large enough t o be seen by t he eye. 6 IGNEOUS ROCK FORMATIONS Igneous rocks can be formed or the Earth s crust. INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK: Comment [SK19]: Below above Comment [SK20]: r ocks that form when m agma intrudes, or pushes into surrounding r ock below the Earth s surface. Intrusive igneous rock usually has a texture because it is well insulated by surrounding rocks and cools. Comment [SK21]: Coarse slowly EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCK: Comment [SK22]: r ocks that form when m agma erupts, or ejects onto the Earth s surface (LAVA).
