Urban Development (September 20, 2018) Town and Country Development Bureau Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning Ministry of Interior, Thailand
Brief Introduction of URBAN DEVELOPMENT URBAN DEVELOPMENT SELF- SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY Town and Country Development Bureau Physical support Social & Environmental support Life & Property safety Uniqueness & Living Quality Riverside habitation : Riverbank Erosion & Annual Flooding Development of Infrastructure based on Local requirements and Disaster prevention concept
Brief Introduction of URBAN DEVELOPMENT SELECTION METHOD : TARGET CITY for Urban Development Specific area by Thailand government policy ex.) Special economic zone (SEZ), Border crossing points, etc. National and Regional tourist attractions ex.) Koh Tao Island, Koh Lanta Island, Sukhothai, Chiangsan, etc. Economic hub and potential development ex.) Phitsanulok, Khon Kaen, etc. Based on a request from Local administrative organization
INFRASTRUCTURE in TARGET CITY Transportation System Water Supply System Solid waste management system NOT Main Responsibilities Collaborative work with others Waste water treatment system Flood protection and Interior drainage system Riverbank erosion protection system Support system (Landscape and Recreational area) MAIN TASK of the Bureau Uniqueness appearance
RIVERBANK PROTECTION
Riverbank Erosion Protection System Riverbank erosion severely affects living life and land loss of Thai people.
Riverbank Erosion Protection System Main Interior River Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan Chaophraya, Tha-Jeen, Mae-Klong Bangprakong, Pasak, Chee, Mun, Songkram Taa-Pee, Trang etc. TWO KINDS OF RIVER : INTERIOR RIVER & NEIGHBORING RIVER Neighboring River Khong, Hueng, Ruak, Sai, Salawin Kraburi, Muey, Ko-lok
Cause of Riverbank Erosion Natural rivers meander along their alignment leading to erosional and depositional processes on both sides of the riverbank to maintain its section. Erosional process causing cutbank of the rivers especially along border regions can make a great impact and conflict between the countries.
Example of Bank Erosion in bordering Rivers In the case of Khong River, from 1974 to 2008 using Aerial Photography, extremely erosion is approximately 318 km in length and 209,600 m 2 /year of area loss. Riverbank Erosion (From 1974 to 2008)
Example of Bank Erosion in interior waterways
Riverbank Erosion Protection Structure Fill embankment with stone riprap

FLOOD PROTECTION In URBAN AREAS
Annual Flooding Phenomenon from Cause (Annual Flooding) to Solution (Flood protection
Causes of Flood, Conditions and Risk area Inundation caused by runoff from the river and highland : When heavy rain occurs in the wide spread and watershed area, this causes runoff from the main river and flood in the communities along the riverbank Inundation caused by tidal flood : During the high tide and high sea level flood in the community from drainage canal and drainage capacity are interconnected, causing the flood in the areas below sea level Inundation caused by heavy rain in the local flood : When heavy rain occurs, drainage canal and drainage capacity cannot drain rainwater outside the area causing the flooding is patchy from Annual Flooding to Water approach & Land approach
Solution 1 : WATER APPROACH Protect community areas from flood by improve the waterway or construct new water channels and the hydraulic structure to by pass and control the water away from the target community areas.
Solution 1 : WATER APPROACH
