1 Geography Curriculum Content Overview Key stage 3 Year 7 Around the Map Skills Into Africa Weather & Rainforests world An introductory topic underpinned by the 4 key skills of map work, use of data, investigation and extended writing as we explore the continents and oceans of the ILP: The world in my life A 6 week investigation into how pupils lives are connected to different countries around the An in-depth study of OS maps and atlases where pupils are encouraged to use a range of mapping tools effectively. This also includes 21 st century mapping through GIS. An investigation into 21 st Century Africa through studying the social, economic and political issues facing this colourful continent. ILP: FantAfrica! A 6 week project based on a fantastic place in Africa. Ethical Geography- The Geography of Food Exploring the ways our actions can affect those in other countries through the study of the food industry. We explore the ways in which the weather can impact our lives with the use of case studies to explore extreme weather events. Local fieldwork features as we investigate microclimate. ILP: Microclimate Pupils conduct local fieldwork to investigate microclimate and must produce a geographical report on their findings. An in-depth study of the eco-system of the Amazon Rainforest and the conflicts that are arising as a result of the development there.

ILP: Fire Pupils complete an extended piece of persuasive writing to sell a house next to a volcano. We delve into the Earth s past to consider how climate has changed both in the UK and globally. Case studies feature heavily as we investigate how glaciers have carved the landscape we see today. An in-depth study of key coastal processes and the impact this can have on a coastline through the creation of distinctive coastal landforms and features. UK case studies feature heavily to highlight the need to protect coastal areas. ILP: Pupils choose a coastal area and deliver a short presentation in class explaining what attracts tourists to this area. Half-term 5 Half-term 6 The Global Supowerpowers (BRICs) Pupils study the world s superpowers; Brazil, Russia, India and China and commentate on their rise to global dominance through their scope of social, and activity. economic political Impossible Places This topic explores how human activity can create or change places which can be considered impossible. Pupils consider what makes a place real and are invited to question their own sense of place in the wider ILP: Impossible Places Pupils conduct local fieldwork to consider whether their own local area has a strong sense of place and identity.
