Penney Sales Associate Biographical Sketch I am a clastic sedimentary geologist and basin analyst. Generally, my research interests are focused on understanding the interactions/feedbacks between plate tectonic processes, climate change, and landscape evolution over geologic time scales through understanding how those linkages are manifested in the sedimentary record. As such, my research ranges from interpreting depositional processes at the outcropscale to interpreting paleogeographic evolution on the basin- to orogen-scale. Much of my work is field oriented, but I have great interest in integrating field observations/measurements with accessory analytical data/methods (e.g., sediment provenance data, geochronologic data, climate proxies, and subsurface data) to elucidate the relative contributions of tectonics, climate, and surface processes to the sedimentary record. I was recently a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Geology at Allegheny College, where I was responsible for teaching at the undergraduate level, pursuing my own research interests while involving undergraduate researchers, and various types of science-related community outreach. Following relocation to Colorado with my spouse, I am currently working to re-establish a position that focuses on geological research, student mentoring, and science communication. I was recently appointed as a Research Assistant Professor at the Colorado School of Mines, and am responsible for pursuing state-of-the-art research within my field of expertise and mentoring graduate students for their thesis work.
