2 Remembering our past to fuel our future The month of January marked the beginning of a new year in the history of America. A rich history filled with memorable events that helped to shape the country that we live in today. The same can be said about the state of Ohio s history. Larry Wickstrom will present his talk, Historical Development of Fuel and Non fuel Mineral Commodities and Ohio, portraying this history that so many of us are a part of today. Please join us on Thursday, February 12 th at the Ramada Plaza Hotel for his talk depicting some of Ohio s memorable events. RSVP for lunch no later than February 11 to Steve Zody at zodyoil@sssnet.com or (330) Once again, the Ohio Geological Society s annual winter gala was a hit! The evening was marked by the usual fantastic musical entertainment of Bill Foley, the always entertaining Ron Rea and gifts from his fossil collection, and a couple of great prize giveaways. An ipod Shuffle was won by Don Lang, Mac Swinford won the grand prize, a Nintendo Wii, and a great time was had by all. Thanks again to our sponsors who continue to make our social events possible. The Ohio Geological Society has over 100 members. Every year we look into expanding our membership to those that we know within Ohio s geologic community. I m sure there is someone that you can think of right now who would be interested in membership with the OGS. Send them an with a membership form and give them the opportunity to sign up. Please help in promoting membership with OGS so that we continue to grow in representation. In other meeting news, mark your calendars on March 4 th for AAPG Distinguished Lecturer Charles Feazel s talk on Using Modern Cave Systems as Analogs for Paleokarst Reservoirs. RSVP for lunch no later than March 3 rd to Steve Zody at zodyoil@sssnet.com or (330) Hope to see you soon, Chris Gordon Energy Resources Group Supervisor - Ohio Geological Survey The Ohio Geological Survey (OGS) seeks applications for the position of Supervisor, Energy Resources Group. 5 OGS MEETING Wednesday, March 4 th Lunch at 11:30, talk at 12:30 pm AAPG Distinguished Lecture Abstract CHARLES T. FEAZEL ConocoPhillips, Houston, Texas Funded by the AAPG Foundation Karst processes, hydrology, dimensions and architecture are useful in understanding karsted rocks that serve as reservoirs for oil and natural gas. Three-dimensional cave surveys can be used to assign properties to karst cells in geocellular models. Surveys of long karst passages (e.g. Yucatan flooded caves) can be used to infer connectivity (i.e. how many karst cells can be neighbors?). Karst processes ranging from surface weathering to deep burial dissolution have affected numerous karst intervals that host petroleum accumulations. Recognition and prediction of subsurface paleokarst from seismic or borehole information involves addressing the following concerns: Does the layer in question consist primarily of carbonate rocks? Is there evidence to suggest subaerial exposure of the carbonates? Using Modern Cave Systems as Analogs for Paleokarst Reservoirs Can a humid paleoclimate be documented? What was the paleo-relief? Does the tectonic history include episodes of jointing, faulting, or fracturing that would focus flowing water in the paleo-hydrologic setting? Is there reason to suspect burial dissolution? Did karst dissolution pre-date petroleum migration? What differences would karsting make to wellbore deliverability, well spacing, drilling operations, injec tion strategies and production profiles? Analogs and regional studies incorporating the elements of this list can be used in the exploration and production workflow to identify potential problems and opportunities, to constrain geo-model input, and to improve communication of subsurface risks and uncertainties. Ramada Plaza Hotel & Conference Center 4900 Sinclair Road Columbus, OH Please RSVP to Steve Zody at zodyoil@sssnet.com or

10 Society of Petroleum Engineers Ohio Petroleum Section ~ Distinguished Lecturer Series Presents Zaki Bassiouni From Louisiana State University Speaking On: Low Cost Methods for Improved Oil and Gas Recovery Wednesday, February 11 th, 2009 It is usually assumed that improvement of oil and gas recovery is a costly proposition. However, several relatively low cost improved oil and gas recovery processes have been studied and tested in the field. These methods do not enjoy a widespread use most likely due to ineffective and/or untimely dissemination of field test results. This lecture will present three such improved oil and gas processes. The lecturer has participated in the conceptual and practical studies of these processes. They are: Well, you will have join us at the meeting in order to learn what the three proven processes are! Dr. Zaki Bassiouni joined the faculty of Louisiana State University in He was a professor and chair of the Craft and Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering from July 1983 to June 2004 before assuming the position of Dean of the College of Engineering. Dr. Bassiouni received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from Cairo University, a diploma in Geophysics from the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Petrole et des Moteurs of Paris, France and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Lille, France. In addition to his academic contributions and publications, Dr. Bassiouni has provided technical expertise to the international oil and gas industries. He has conducted training in more than thirty countries worldwide. He is the author of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Textbook Series Vol. 4 Theory, Measurement, and Interpretation of Well Logs. Come and listen to Dr. Zaki Bassiouni speak on this practical subject. We plan to meet for lunch at 11:30 am at The McKinley Grand Hotel, 320 Market Avenue South, Canton, Ohio on Tuesday, May 20 th, The cost for this meeting is $20 per person which includes lunch but not parking. You need not be a member of SPE to attend (but you will be encouraged to join!). Please RSVP by Monday, February 9 th, 2009 by contacting Sharon Davis, Range Resources Appalachia LLC at or via at SharonDavis@RangeResources.com
