Ril<e Consulting Geologist Box 763 Worthington, OR (614) thegeologist@juno.com Welcome to the Ohio Geological Society's 37th year! Before I begin, I would like to use this opportunity to thank last year's officers - Bill Rike, Steve Zody, and Dan Hall. Now I want to introduce this year's officers. Our Vice-President is Steve Zody, owner of Zody Geoscience Services, and our new monthly Program Chairman. This year's schedule is filling up fast so contact Steve with any speaker requests as soon as possible. John Forman, President of CGAS Exploration, Inc. is the new Secretary. With Stephanie Bailey's help, John will be getting an informative newsletter to you at the beginning of each month. Right John? This years Treasurer is Jim McDonald, who works at the Ohio Geological Survey. Sorry folks, we did hand our money over to a government employee. Jim will be responsible for our current healthy financial account. Yes, we are still financially healthy and looking for ways to give back to our membership by sponsoring special events such as a Christmas party, a workshop, and any other ideas we get from you. Along with John, I also work for CGAS Exploration. To start the season with a bang, we have scheduled TWO events for the month of September. A field trip to Seneca Caverns has been scheduled for September 11th. It is on a Friday, so ask your boss (if you have one), if you can have the day off to study the Karst features and cave development. This is a necessary part of every geologists' education. See the insert for all the necessary information. We have also scheduled a joint luncheon meeting with SPWLA on September 17th in Cambridge, Ohio at the Cambridge Country Club. Speaker Dennis Hull, with the Ohio Geological Survey will discuss the locations of known karst features and probable karst areas in Ohio. I am looking forward to seeing you at both events in September and serving you as President of the Society. Next Meeting: Friday, September 1/; 1998 Time: Place: l1:jo s.rn. Cambridge Country Club Cost: $15.{)(} per person RSVP: John JJO Ext. 167
2 Speaker of the Month... Dennis Hull- Karst and probable karstfeatures map of Ohio; i:500,ooo-scale digital openjile report. The ODNR, Division of Geological Survey will soon release a 1:500,000-scale digital map of Ohio showing the locations of known karst features and probable karst areas. The map was prepared under a grant from the Ohio Low- Level Radioactive Waste Facility Development Authority, and was developed as a screening tool to address Section , Division (A)(13) of the Ohio Revised Code which states that "...[a low-level radioactive waste] disposal site shall not be located in areas of known or probable karst." (Note: LLRW disposal siting activities in Ohio terminated September 30, 1997.) Cave inventories, theses and other literature and field evidence provided documentation for known karst features. Aerial photographs, soil surveys, 1:24,000-scale bedrock geology and bedrock topography maps, and other sources allowed delineation of probable karst features. Probable karst areas were defmed as areas that: 1) lie within a half-mile of a known or probable karst feature, and 2) are underlain by carbonate bedrock with less than 20 feet of unconsolidated and/or non-carbonate bedrock overburden. Known and probable karst features, and probable karst areas were plotted on 1:24,000-scale, USGS topographic quadrangles. The location of karst features and probable karst areas were digitized into an ArcInfo database for utilization in GIS-based screening applications and generation-of an open- ~ - file, 1:500,000-scale map depicting karst terrains of Ohio. Probable karst areas depicted on the map are located primarily in: 1) north central Ohio where a broad band of solution-collapse depressions extend from northeastern Seneca County to Lake Erie, 2) central Ohio where thin-drift covered limestone uplands lie adjacent to the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, 3) southern Ohio carbonate regions lying beyond the Wisconsinan glacial boundary, and 4) west central Ohio in the Bellefontaine Outlier uplands of Logan and Champaign counties. THE AUTHOR: Dennis N. Hull obtained BS and MS degrees in Geology from Wright State University in 1974 and 1976 respectively. In 1977, he was hired as a geology by the ODNR, Division of Geological Survey and assumed his current position as Assistant State Geologist and Deputy Chief of the Division of Geological Survey in His primary administrative responsibilities at the Survey include oversight of the Division's Coal Geology, Bedrock Mapping, Environmental and Surficial Geology, Petroleum Geology, and Industrial Minerals Groups; personal research interests include characterization of land areas for solid-waste disposal, aggregate-resource mapping, surficial-materials map-. ping, and karst-terrain mapping. He is an active member of the Ohio Section. of the American Institute of Professional Geologists and a member of the Society of Mining Engineers. Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Geological Survey Announcement - Mather Medal Award Dr. Adriaan Janssens, a past geologist with the Ohio Geological Survey and long-time consulting geologist, has recently been named as the 1998 recipient of the Ohio Geological Survey's prestigious Mather Medal. The medal, named for Ohio's first state geologist, William W. Mather ( ), is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge of Ohio geology. Dr. Janssens, Arie to friends and coworkers, is a native of the Netherlands. He got his BS at Kent State and Masters and Doctoral Degrees at Ohio State University. Starting with his ten years as a geologist and then head of the Subsurface Geology Section of the Ohio Geological Survey, Arie has become a recognized expert and authority on the Cambrian to Devonian rocks of Ohio. Since his stint with the Survey, Arie has been a consulting geologist in Ohio while continuing his personal research on the lower Paleozoic rocks. An awards banquet will be held in Dr. Janssens' honor Friday, September 25, 1998 from 6:00-10:00 p.m. at the Ramada University Hotel, 3110 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio. - The cost to attend the banquet is $ For reservations, please contact David Stith by September 11, at the Ohio Geological Survey, (614) SENECA CAVERNS FIELD TRIP SEPTEMBER 11, 1998 The Ohio Geological Society will be travelling to Bellevue, Ohio for a field trip to "The Caviest Cave in the USA" - Seneca Caverns. This field trip will be at no cost to you so we hope many of you can attend. We would like everyone to be there by noon. 5 OHIO GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY- PRE-MEETING TECHNICAL SEMINAR PETROLEUM SEISMOLOGY This one-day course features lecture topics on many aspects of petroleum exploration through the use of seismic data. Over the past five years many advancements in seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation have changed the way a geoscientist finds oil and gas. Each seismic exploration process will be presented in short lecture periods by the feature lecturer, Bob Hardage, Senior Research Scientist at the Bureau of Economic Geology, Austin, Texas. Special emphasis will be placed on the workstation environment and the advantages of using computers to aid in seismic interpretation. Examples of 2D and 3D seismic case histories will be shown. In addition, a regiona12d seismic line will be processed "live" throughout the day. Incremental steps in the process will be reviewed and discussed in an open forum. Numerous on-site PC workstations, with instructors, will be available for hands-on interpretation experience. Learning centers for the latest field seismic acquisition equipment also will be on-site. Course participants will be eligible for 0.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). Bob A. Hardage is a Senior Research Scientist at the Bureau of Economic Geology and Lead Scientist for the Exploration Geophysics Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. in physics from Oklahoma State University after completing a NASA-sponsored IN THE DIGITAL AGE investigation of micrometeorite impact on space vehicles. He began work for Phillips Petroleum Company in 1966 and concentrated on geophysical modeling, seismic imaging, seismic stratigraphy, vertical seismic profiling, and exploration management. After serving as Exploration Manager, Asia and Latin America, he left Phillips in 1988 to join Western Atlas International, Inc., where he was Vice President of Geophysical Development and Marketing for Atlas Wireline Services until Dr. Hardage has authored over 60 technical papers, taught numerous public courses on 3D seismic technology, seismic stratigraphy, and vertical seismic profiling in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and conducted several internal, continuing education courses for individual companies. More than 3,500 copies of his book, Vertical Seismic Profiling, have been purchased by explorationists, and the book is in its third printing. He has also written a second book, Seismic Stratigraphy, prepared chapters in AAPG Memoir 39 - Seismic Stratigraphy II, the SEG book Reservoir Geophysics, and the combined AAPG-SEG publication 3D Seismic Atlas; and published a third book, Crosswell Seismology and Reverse VSP. He is a past Editor of Geophysics. His current interest is the development of multicomponent seismic technology for improved characterization of reservoir systems.
