2 OGS MEETING Thursday, November 9 th Lunch at 11:30, talk at 12:30 pm. Please RSVP for lunch to Alison Nutter at seismic@sprynet.com or Midwest Hotel & Conference Center 4900 Sinclair Road Columbus, OH COAL BED METHANE OPERATIONS IN THE NORTHERN LATROBE SYNCLINE, INDIANA AND WESTMORELAND COUNTY, SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, BLACKLICK AND DERRY FIELDS; STRUCTURAL AND STRATIGRAPHIC FACTORS INFLUENCING PRODUCTION MILLER, JOHN F., ENERVEST OPERATING LLC The Blacklick and Derry Fields consist of 118 wells that produce from seams in the Conemaugh, Allegheny, and Pottsville Formations. There are generally 3-6 seams completed in individual wells with net completed thickness per well ranging from 6-15 feet at a depth of feet. The Blacklick Field is at the northern termination of the Latrobe syncline where the NE tending structure is cross cut by a NW tending Cross Strike Discontinuity (CSD). The CSD is associated with increases in coal thickness in the Upper Freeport, Middle Kittaning, and Clarion coal seams. The CSD may also enhance the cleat development. EUR numbers within the Blacklick field sweet spot are generally double the numbers in the remaining field (Average EUR of MMCF versus normal MMCF). The Middle Kittaning and Clarion coal thickness appear to correlate very well with increased production. Derry Field to the south of Blacklick has similar net coal thickness but drastically different production (EUR s below 50 MMCF). Cores were taken in Blacklick and Derry Fields to compare the gas content values. The core in Blacklick has an overall gas content average of 209scf/ton (Bevilaqua #1), and in Derry the average is 200 scf/ton (Smith Family #3). The similar gas contents indicate that increased fracture porosity due to the CSD in Blacklick may be important for deliverability of the gas from the coal matrix. A general comparison of the Ohio Coal Regions to the current fields in Pennsylvania indicate that Ohio has the thickness and appropriate depths for CBM production. The Structures and proximity to outcrop present in Pennsylvania may enhance the speed of the hydrodynamic cycle and increase the biogenic gas contents in the coals along these structures.

4 I am writing to you as Vice-President of the Ohio Geological Society. We are a non-profit organization, formed in 1961, and are an affiliate Society of The American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Eastern Section of the AAPG. As you may know, we are shaping up to be one of the most exciting and important societies of Ohio in the field of geology. We are currently planning our upcoming meetings and are requesting speakers. It is my pleasure to invite you to share your research and expertise to further inspire our knowledge and promote the study of Geology. We would like to embrace everyone with a wide choice of topics for members of the oil and gas, coal, environmental and academic communities. In order for this to be successful, we request your assistance in joining our list of informative speakers. Topics could be of current or past research, publications, abstracts, presentations, student thesis or anything that would foster the science of geology. We would like talks based on topics related to the science of geology as it relates to petroleum, natural gas and associated liquids, ground water, coal, oil shales, and other natural resources. Your participation is an important contribution to the profession and a great way to share your expertise with peers and colleagues. We strive to bring together an outstanding and diverse group of members and make every attempt to include younger scientists and students as well. One of our biggest goals is to increase participation at our monthly meetings. Each month, September through May, The Ohio Geological Society gathers for an informative meeting. During this meeting, important issues pertaining to the science of geology are discussed including, but not limited to, the issues facing Ohio and the Appalachian Region. We invite you, your colleagues and your students to attend. Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 9, Our speaker, John Miller, will present Coal Bed Methane in the Northern Latrobe Syncline, Indiana and Westmoreland County, Southwestern Pennsylvania, Blacklick and Derry Fields: Structural and Stratigraphic Factors Influencing Production, Sweet Spots vs. Sour Apples. Meetings are a luncheon meeting on the third Thursday of each month, September-May, at the Mid-West Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio. Attendance at these meetings is free and learning is for everyone. I hope that you will share my enthusiasm for this meeting and favorably consider this invitation. As well, for your interest, The Society has four categories of membership: Active Members, Honorary Life Members, Associates, and Student Associates. Dues for Active Members and Associates are $20 per year. Dues for Student Associates are $5 per year. The requirements for each of the membership categories and a downloadable membership form are provided at Please let me know if you are able to accept our invitation. If you would like additional information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me either by seismic@sprynet.com or by phone I look forward to hearing back from you very soon! Sincerely, Alison Nutter Vice-President, OGS PO Box Columbus, Ohio 43214
