1 '~' OallO ~(~JGBOUtGlI~ P_.o._Box_14_322 '~ 800llJll'Y'Y COLUMBUS, OHIO 4321< SEPTEMBER 1989 GEOGRAM PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The summe~ of 1989 is almost ove~, the kids have started back to school and the 28th year of the Ohio Geological Society is about to get unde~way. Welcome to the meeting season of the OG6. I ce~tainly hope all of you have had a successful summe~. After a busy summe~ and a short respite your new officers have al~eady been ha~d at wo~k, trying to make this year as successful as p~evious years. With plenty of hard work, suppo~t from the member., luck and the ble.sings of the Great Geologist upstai~s the Ohio Geological Society will carry its goals and objectives well into the 19~0' On behalf of the membership of the Ohio Geological Society I would like to thank our corporate sponsors for their generous support. Their contributions are greatly appreciated and are vital to the continuation of our Society's programq and activities. The list of Corporate Sponso~s is printed in another section of this newsletter. Kim Stemen, our Vice-President and program chairman has already put together some inte~esting speakers for this year's meetings. For our first meeting in September we are pleased to have OSU ProfesQor, Larry Krissek, discussing modern and ancient analogs to Miatiissippian and Devonian depositional sequenc~1i in south8dliiti:lrn Ohio. Pleaaa check elsewhere for specifics on the meeting and plan to attend. With all the exciting new developments in OhiO geology in recant months and the existence and availability of new data, we hope to bring to the geologic community some informative and pertinent talks this year. Look for details in subsequent Geograms and make the monthly OG6 meetings part of your ~egula~ schedule. In addition to the excellent speakers planned for this yea~ we hope to have the long awaited Morrow County publication ready by the Spring or early Summer of More on that later in the year. Plea.e contact me or any of the other officers if you would like to become involved in the Society's activities, suggest a topic for a talk or field trip, give a talk, lead a field trip or just servs on a committee. Comments and/or suggestions can be made by writing down your ideas at the bottom of your membership renewal form (enclosed within) or contact me at I would like to tak. this opportunity to thank the Society's members for the support and confidence that has been extended to me in the past year. Thank you! I look forward to seeing all of you at the meetings, which are usually held the 3rd Monday of the month at the Harley Hotel, (corner of 1-71 and SR 161) Columbus, Ohio. Robert T. Randall, President

September Meeting The September meeting ot the Ohio Geological Society will be held Monday Sept. 18, 1989 at the Harley Hotel (corner ot 1-71 and SR-161, Dublin-Granville Rd.>, Columbus, Ohio. Complimentary cocktails will be served 6:30 PM - 7 PM, dinner and cash bar from 7 PM 8 PM and the technical presentation at 8 PM. You are welcome to attend just the technical presentation if you cannot make the dinner. If you would like to attend dinner prior to the meeting, r8servations are required and can be made by calling Kim Stemen by 5 PM, Friday Sept. 15, Menu unavailable at press time. The Society is pleased to have Dr. Lawrence A. Krissek, Associate Professor, Department of Geology ~ Mineralogy, Ohio State University, as our guest lecturer this month. Studies of Shale Provenance: A Survey of Objectives, Techniques, And Examples Despite their relative abundance in the geologic record, fine-grained clastic sediments (shales) generally have not been studied in as much detail as sandstones and carbonates. Within the past 20 years, however, extensive study of fine grained sediments from the modern ocean basins has provided a variety of tools that can be used to examine the environmental records of moderm and ancient ~ine-grained sediments. This presentation will concentrate on the objectives related to clastic source areas: how to determine their importance relative to biogenic input, and how to evaluate their lithologies and weathering regimes. Examples will be presented from ongoing studies of Permian shales in Antarctica and Devonian shales o~ the Appalachian Basin.
