DRMREEF: DNA taxonomy and Recruitment Monitoring of the Coral Reef Marine Organisms Youn-Ho Lee Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology
I. Objectives To enhance national and regional capacity for species identification and genetic analysis; To establish a genetic marker called DNA barcode for each species as a standard measures for objective identification; To build an inventory of marine organisms living in the coral reefs in WESTPAC countries and share the information among member countries for the assessment of biodiversity; To monitor recruitment of the reef organisms by analyzing the larvae and fries
II. Project Leader and Steering Group Project Leader: Dr. Youn-Ho Lee (KOREA) Project Steering Group - Indonesia: Dr. Zainal Arifin, Mr. Indra Bayu Vimono - Japan: Dr. Shuhei Nishida - Korea: Dr. Sung-Dae Kim, Mr. Jinu Jung - Malaysia: Dr. Siti Azizah Mohd Nor, Dr. Aileen Tan - Philippines: Dr. Ephrime B. Metillo - Thailand: Dr. Somkiat Khokiattiwong, Dr. Suchana Chavanich - Vietnam: Dr. Vo Si Tuan
III-1. Concept of the common database building WESTPAC Marine Biodiversity Portal National Inventory A National Inventory B National Inventory C Each country builds its own inventory and makes available by the WESTPAC portal; The portal shares the data among all users
Taxonomy
III-2. Concept of Recruitment Monitoring Identification of larvae, fries using DNA barcode Assessment of species recruitment in a reef
IV. Progress 1. Inception meeting: Bangkok Thailand, Aug. 5-6, 2013, - Five countries agreed to join building the common WESTPAC marine biodiversity portal - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam contracted with WESTPAC 2. Training Course on Recruitment Monitoring of Coral Reef Organisms: Nha Trang Vietnam, April 20-21, Held just before the 9th IOC/WESTPAC scientific symposium
3. Mid-term workshop - Held in Nha Trang Vietnam, April 23, 2014 during the 9th IOC/WESTPAC scientific symposium - Database format settled and the WESTPAC portal initiated 4. Establishment of the WESTPAC Marine Biodiversity Portal Site (MBPS) - The portal site is constructed 1000 data, 200 each from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. - The data include taxonomic information, collecting information such as the location and date, specimen information such as photos and description, and DNA barcode information if present.
<Data search function of the portal site>
(IV. Progress) <Indonesia> marine organism data consisting of 38 corals, 75 crustaceans, 63 echinoderms, 24 fish species have been submitted to the WESTPAC MBPS. - The data are connected with the RCO-LIPI CoML website. <RCO-LIPI CoML website>
<Malaysia> fish, 100 echinoderm data have been submitted with some geographic information. <Distribution of a common sea cucumber>
<Thailand> sample data of fish, Cnidarian, Mollusca and Mysozoa from the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea were deposited in the WESTPAC MBPS. - The data are connected with the Phuket Marine Biological Center s Reference Collection and Chulalongkorn University collection. <Sampling sites in Thailand>
<Philippines> data of 7 corals, 1 crustacean and 163 fish species with DNA barcode information are deposited - The data are connected with sealifebas.org <Vietnam> species data are submitted which have connection with the museum collection of Vietnam Institute of oceanography.
(IV. Progress ) 5. Wrap-up workshop - held in Phuket, Thailand, December 4-5, 2014
V. Future plan - Financial support for the second phase of the project (March 2015 March 2017) is approved by Korea Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries. - The inventories in the WESTPAC MBPS will be expanded to approximately 2000 data in the second phase. - Mirror sites would be established in each participating countries.
VI. Implications 1. Establishment of a regional network for sharing information on species identity and its distribution at the regional level 2. Setting up a foundation for cooperative management of the marine biological resources which are the most diverse in the world. 3. Capacity building for monitoring recruitment of larvae and fries of coral reef organisms with an objective tool, genetic method
