The slide pack supports the version 3.0 of the Catchment Data Explorer application, released 25/06/2018 The website is here: 1
SECURITY MARKING: PROTECT MANAGEMENT - PROTECT Key additions: Re-worked water body pages make accessing RNAGS (reasons for not achieving good status) RFD (reasons for deterioration) data easier they now have their own table on the detailed water body pages. Improved mapping on the water body pages allows users to more easily navigate to surrounding water bodies and catchments. Data for investigations into classification status can be viewed and downloaded. 2
SECURITY MARKING: PROTECT MANAGEMENT - PROTECT Main features: See following slides for screenshots Find catchments by searching or clicking on a map - Search by postcode, place name, gird reference, catchment (RBD, management catchment, operational catchment, water body) Search for, view and download classifications, and objectives and reasons for not achieving good data from the operational catchment pages. View classification, objectives, measures, reasons for not achieving good status ( RNAG ) data and data about links between water bodies and protected areas View catchment summaries at RBD, management and operational catchment level Download datasets for classifications, reasons for achieving good status, objectives., measures, and water body to protected area links at RBD, Management Catchment, Operational Catchment and Water body scale. Detailed water body pages list classifications down to element level & other key water body information. Glossary Help page. Follow links to our consultation pages, and to other useful sites, such as the catchment based approach, DataShare and UKTAG 3
Catchment data explorer home page Home page Search by place name, postcode, coordinates or catchment/water body name Click a river basin district on the map or the list to the side to navigate to the management catchments within it. 4
Search results Use the search bar to search for River Basin Districts, management catchments, operational catchments and water bodies by: Postcode Place name Coordinates (easting and northing or latitude and longitude) Catchment or water body name (searches against River Basin District, management catchment, operational catchment and water body name). You can click any result in the tables or shown on the map to go to the River Basin District, management catchment, operational catchment or water body pages. NOTE: By default, surface water catchments display on the maps. See next slide for more on this. **NEW for version 2.0** Use the filter drop down box on the map to switch management and operational catchments on and off. By default, surface waters are turned on. 5
Search results - Toggling surface water, ground water and artificial catchments on and off. By default, the search results and river basin district pages display with surface waters catchments turned on. This is necessary because of the way the different catchments would overlap each and make viewing difficult. Use the map filter control to select which catchments are displayed. The 3 types of catchments are:: Surface water: contain rivers, lakes, coastal & transitional (estuary) water bodies Groundwater: contain groundwater bodies Artificial: contain canals and surface water transfer water bodies 6
River Basin District page Map is showing the management catchments within the river basin district. **New for version 2.1** water body to protected area links data download download a dataset listing the protected area linked to water bodies in this catchment **NEW for version 2.0** Use the filter drop down box on the map to switch management and catchments on and off. By default, surface waters are turned on. **NEW for version 2.0** Download all the classifications, measures, reasons for not achieving god status and objective data for a river basin district. Click the map and tables to navigate to management catchment or operational catchment pages. Click the summary button to view the catchment summary text and stats. 7
River Basin District Catchment Summary page **New for version 2.1** summary pages fully re-worked and available at RBD, management catchment and operational catchment levels. The re-worked catchment summary pages follow the same format for RBD, management catchment and operational catchment. Includes: - Catchment description - Number of water bodies of each water category in the chosen catchment - Classification summary - Objectives summary - RNAGS and RFD summary by sector reasons split by sector responsible - Measures summary by sector the numbers of measures, split by the sector of the lead organisation - Link to the river basin management plan on the Gov.uk site for the river basin district that this catchment falls within NOTE Some management catchments and operational catchments contain only surface or groundwater bodies; there are only summary classification & objectives tables for the types of water bodies are present in the particular catchment. 8
Management catchment page Map is showing the operational catchments within the management catchment. **New for version 2.1** water body to protected area links data download - download a dataset listing the protected area linked to water bodies in this catchment **NEW for version 2.0** Download all the classifications, measures, reasons for not achieving god status and objective data for a river basin district. Click the map and tables to navigate to operational catchment pages. Click the summary button to view the catchment summary text and stats. 9
Operational catchment page with summary Map is showing the water bodies in the operational catchment. The map and tables can be clicked to navigate to water bodies. The green buttons allow searching by classification, objectives and reasons for not achieving good status, and display the measures in the Operational Catchment Clicking the summary button takes the user to a catchment summary. The download icons allow download of the full sets of classifications, objectives, reasons for not achieving good status, measures and water body to protect area links for the catchment. NOTE: Downloads may take some time **New for version 2.1** water body to protected area links data download - download a dataset listing the protected area linked to water bodies in this catchment **NEW for 2.0** Measures data now available (may not be data present for all Operational Catchments) 10
Operational catchment classification search page Map/table showing the water bodies within the operational catchment and their status for the selected classification items. Use the filter buttons to select the items from the classification hierarchy, and the statuses, that you want filter by (see next slide). These search results data can also be downloaded. Clicking an underlined classification status in the table opens the reasons for not achieving good status page (see later slides). 11
Operational catchment classification search results page Use the filters to search for 1 or many classification items. Use the expand and contract arrows to select the items to search for. Select all/select none also available. By default, all the classification statuses are selected. 12
Operational catchment objectives search results The objectives search works in the same was as the classification search, details in pervious slides. The map shows water bodies, coloured by their objective status Data is downloadable **NEW for version 2.0** Now includes predicted outcomes data 13
Operational catchment reasons for not achieving good search results page Use the classification element selector to pick one or many classification elements, in the same way as the classification and objectives search. This will then limit the returned results to show RNAGs (reasons for not achieving good status) or RFDs (reasons for deterioration) that are linked to those classification elements. NOTE: RNAGs & RFDs only apply to classification elements, the lowest level of the classification hierarchy. There is more about this one the site s help page. Use the filters to narrow down your search by pressure (only applies to biological classification elements), SWMI (significant water management issue), activity and category and business sector. Clicking the ID of an RNAG or RFD opens a page for that record. Data is downloadable **NEW for version 2.1** The RNAGS search has been slightly re-worked to ensure that a classification element has been selected before the search is run, avoiding misleading no results returned searches. 14
Operational catchment measures page If there a re measures present in the operational catchment, this page displays them. **NEW for version 2.1** The measures data in CDE is a subset of measures which the predicted improvements in the status of water bodies by 2021 are based upon. Other measures may be taking place in this operational catchment, but there is not enough confidence (in location or scale of improvement) to predict specific outcomes based upon them. A summary of these measures can be viewed on the Environment Agency s Sharefile service ( Additional measures will have been identified and shown to be worthwhile in an economic appraisal, but funding has not yet been secured to progress these measures. For further information contact your local Environment Agency Catchment Co-ordinator using the details on.gov.uk ( Clicking the ID opens the open the individual measures page (next slide) Clicking the number in the RFF column opens a table of the RNAGS/RFDs linked to this measures. 15
Individual measures page Shows the detailed information about the measure. Measures categorisation the categorisation of measures is the combination of the 3 measure tiers. A measure can have 1 or many categorisations, in this case just 1. Water bodies affected the water bodies that this measure will benefit. This is determined by linking from Measuresinvestigations-classifications-water body. There can be multiple water bodies listed here. Linked RNAGS click to see which reasons for not achieving god status and reasons for deterioration a measure is linked to. 16
Detailed Water body page - Map showing the water body catchment, with detailed classification information, links to RNAGs and links to alternative objectives. - Links to up/down stream WBs - Expand the classifications for water bodies, and view their objectives and click through to reasons for not achieving good. - Data is downloadable - Links to protected areas table showing the types of protected area a water body is linked to. You can also download a dataset which gives more detailed water body to protected area links. **New for v3** page substantially re-worked. Improved map, easier access to reasons data 17
Detailed Water body page (classifications expanded) In this slide the classifications have been expanded using the arrows on the left, to show element level results. For fish the 2014 classification is underlined. This means there is a reason for not achieving good status attached. Clicking the link takes you to this RNAG s page (next slide). Alternatively, you can view this in the reason table. 18
Reasons for not achieving good status (RNAG) and reasons for deterioration (RFD) table Shows the RNAGs and RFDs that we believe are impacting the classification elements in this water body. 19
Reasons for not achieving good (RNAG) status page Clicking on any underlined classification status in the classification search results screen displays the RNAG page. 20
Help page The help page has detailed information. There are explanations of the classification and catchment hierarchies and tips on how to use the various searches. 21
Useful links page links to other useful sites and datasets 22
Glossary The glossary page has been improved and updated, and reference to database terms has been removed. 23
Noticed a problem page This should be used as a way to report feedback on the catchment data explorer only, and not a general tool for feeding back to the Environment Agency. 24
Linked data API This interface allows others to use our linked data in their applications. **New for v2.1** - API searching has been turned on. 25
Known issues in this build Does not work well in Internet Explorer 8, we recommend the use of Chrome, Firefox or an up to date version of Internet Explorer Missing Catchment summaries & catchment pictures We are planning how to address these gaps. 26
Help and support CaBA Best practice site CDE Guidance SharePoint site (EA internal only) Noticed a problem page - feedback is sent to an EA address. 27
