1 Introduction 1

2 2001 It was born out of the recognition that several of the regions prominent resource management agencies have similar, if not shared, requirements for GIS data. Some of the underlying goals of the GIS Library are to: 1) make sure folks know what s available in terms of geospatial data and resources that could contribute to their decision support toolkits; 2) enhance access to regional data resources, particularly data funded by public monies and data of regional significance; 3) make sure that the data hosted at the GIS Library meets basic distribution standards so as to alleviate complexity for the end user; and 4) work with resource managers to identify shared geospatial requirements and develop resources that have regional application. 2

3 It was born out of the recognition that several of the regions prominent resource management agencies have similar, if not shared, requirements for GIS data. Originating at the Forest Service in 2001, the GIS Library now includes 10 partner agencies and is jointly funded and managed by representatives from each of these agencies. The committee was expanded in 2008, 2011, and again in 2013 to reflect the dominant source of the data contributions available to the library and skill sets needed to support its continued development. 3

4 The GIS Library offers data in a variety of formats, however, the bulk of the information we host is in the form or downloadable data and services which address those datasets. Downloadable data All downloadable data hosted at the GIS Library conforms to national metadata standards Of particular note, the metadata includes contact information for the contributing agency so end users can open a dialog with the relevant subject matter experts about a particular dataset Several of the datasets are updated frequently, usually on the advice of the contributing agency, however, some datasets are on a regular update schedule for example we hosts some USFS data that is being replicated directly from their corporate data warehouse in Kansas City Live Data Streaming Live Data Streaming saves users from having to download and manage other agencies data in conjunction with their own data. Instead they can use the live service without the overhead of having to confirm consistency with the steward agency in other words, by way of streaming the data from the GIS Library, the data is always the most current publicly available version. Metadata Query Functionality The GIS Library s query functionality lets users quickly preview the data and determine if its fit for purpose or at least worth investigating further This functionality provides users with visibility and ready access to ALL of the data hosted at the GIS Library. Tutorial and Content Documentation On the website, we have documentation explaining how to access specific content, as well as documentation that briefly explains EACH of downloadable datasets Online Mapping Applications Were also getting into the realm of online mapping applications. We re currently in the process of constructing a series of these applications that will allow users to not only visualize datasets, but assess them against imagery, as well topographic and bathymetric relief. The first 2 of these applications are now in active development and will soon be available on the web. Specific Resource Modules The GIS Library is also in the process of pulling together online Resource Modules that will take a holistic look at regional resource components and tell their story through the use of online mapping applications, interlinked web content, published research findings and downloadable data. The underlying concept of these modules is the development of a first port of call for resource managers who need to quickly assess the availability of GIS data around a particular topic. The first of these proposed modules, a Coastal Marine module, will focus on the interface between terrestrial hydrography, estuary systems and marine systems pending approval from the Coastal Impact Assistance Program, this work will begin in

6 One of our most active tools is the GIS Library Geoportal. Here you can search and browse for the data available through our partnership. Search by keyword, theme or organization. 6

8 The interface between terrestrial and marine zones in SE Alaska is complex. The range of human activities and wildlife habitat occurring at this interface represents a key knowledge gap for resource managers. The SE Alaska GIS Library and its partners identified access to a broad range of coastal geospatial data as a starting point for resource managers to navigate this complexity. Through partner support, the Coastal Resource Management Module is a family of services hosted by the SE Alaska GIS Library that facilitates access and visualization to a broad range of users. Funded by agrant from the Coastal Impact Assistance Program, in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy. 8

18 Coastal Communities Scenario: You are a community planner in the city of Sitka and you are siting a new solid waste disposal or recycling center and you need information for your scoping document. We need to find a site that is city owned, avoids wetlands and fish streams and has proximity to a road. Print 18

20 This is an example dataset from Sitka to demonstrate the utility of having all of the SE communities parcel, basic ownership and transportation datasets available in web mapping services. Please see Sitka s website for updated data. I ve turned on Parcels and Zoning. In this example, we want to find all of the parcels that are municipally owned. 20

21 Clicking the dropdown next the Parcels layer in the City and Borough of Sitka map, will allow you to view the table associated with the data. 21

24 After exploring the data a bit, we see we would like to filter the data by LO or Land Owner field is equal to Municipal. Click Apply. 24

34 This is the new Estuaries Habitat Classification dataset by the Alaska Nature Conservancy. They have analyzed the major effects on estuary productivity across SE Alaska. I m going to use this dataset as a way to select all of the watersheds that are influenced by glaciers by filtering the features using the associated table. 34

37 After exploring the data, I ve found I need to filter the classification data by DESC_2 contains Glacier. 37

38 Here you see only the glacially influenced watersheds. UAS is currently consolidating historical stream temperature data for SE. I ve added the Historic Stream Temperature locations from UAS to get a feel for where more monitoring stations could be added. 38

43 Nature Conservancy has sent us new data in the past two months that needs to be processed and included. We are adding records to our Geoportal search engine for each of these datasets to be completed by the end of the project. We are always accepting new datasets to add to our collection. 43
