FireFamilyPlus Version 5.0 Working with the new 2016 NFDRS model
Objectives During this presentation, we will discuss Changes to FireFamilyPlus Data requirements for NFDRS2016 Quality control for data Changing between the 78/88 system and NFDRS2016 in FireFamilyPlus Comparison of data for a sample site
FireFamilyPlus Version 5.0 Version 5.0 is still FireFamilyPlus: Its functionality has not changed Version 5.0 now allows users to track and analyze NFDRS2016 components
Technical Documentation Is being updated to reflect changes in FireFamilyPlus version 5.0
Downloading FireFamilyPlus v5.0 Information about NFDRS2016 and updates to FireFamilyPlus v5.0 will be posted at
Obtaining Historical Data Weather FW13 files are available from WIMS KCFAST FAMWEB Western Region Climate Center (WRCC)
Obtaining Historical Data Weather NFDRS2016 requires hourly weather data in the FW13 format to run properly This includes solar radiation, a required input to NFDRS2016
How many years of data do I need? Consistent, quality hourly data are critical days of data are still needed prior to the fire season for 1000-hr fuel moisture
How many years of data do I need? NFDRS2016 requires solar radiation Installation started in late 1990s 10 years of data are often sufficient for analysis
Obtaining Historical Hourly Weather Best practice: 1. Download official record of daily data from o WIMS, o KCFAST, or o FAMWEB Fire & Weather Data website 2. Download hourly data from WRCC
Downloading Historical Hourly Weather Western Region Climate Center (WRCC) Hourly Data Option 1: cefa.dri.edu/raws/. Enter WIMS station ID.
Downloading Historical Hourly Weather Western Region Climate Center (WRCC) Hourly Data Option 2: wfas.net/nfdrs2016/maps Zoom into the area of interest Select station
Creating a FireFamilyPlus Database Open FireFamilyPlus 5.0 and create a new database (File > New). Note: The new database has no weather data or fires loaded. Station catalogs are from the time that FireFamilyPlus was created and may be out-of-date.
Creating a FireFamilyPlus Database Import twofw13 records First, the official data of record from WIMS Second, the WRCC data
Importing Historical Hourly Weather Click on Data > Import. Select the FW9/FW13 Files button.
Importing Historical Hourly Weather Browse to your data, select the files, and click Open.
Importing Historical Hourly Weather Remember to import the daily data first and then the hourly data.
Search for errors Daily data Use Stats Graphs to show obvious outliers in daily data.
Search for errors Daily/Hourly data Click on Weather > View Observations > (Daily or All). In the View Observations screen, sort data. Right-click at top of any column. Select Sort Ascending or Sort Descending.
Search for errors Daily/Hourly data Click on Weather > View Observations > (Daily or All). In the View Observations screen, sort data. Right-click at top of any column. Select Sort Ascending or Sort Descending.
Search for errors Hourly data You can export data to explore further. In the View Observations window, click the Save icon.
Search for errors Hourly data Select Custom Format to export Temperature, RH, Wind Speed, Precipitation Amount, etc. as a commadelimited text file.
Quality control check in Excel Import the data into Excel. Open the Data tab. Use the ascending and descending Sort Filters to look for errors.
Quality control check in Excel See the handout for more information on using Excel for data quality control.
What about the errors? NFDRS2016 requires consistent accurate data. At a minimum, correct the daily 1300 observation if possible. Short data gaps (a few days) are OK. Longer data gaps are problematic The Fire Danger Subcommittee will provide advice on correcting data.
Compare 78/88 system to 2016 system in FireFamilyPlus 5.0 Again, two FW13 sets must be downloaded. 1. Station catalogue and historical daily weather from WIMS, KCFAST, or FamWeb. 2. Historical hourly weather from WRCC. Solar radiation is required.
Activating NFDRS 2016 in FireFamilyPlus 5.0 Switching between the 78/88 system and the 2016 system is a simple change of fuel model in FFP v5. Fuel Models A through U are used in 78/88 Fuel Models V through Z are used in 2016.
Activating NFDRS 2016 in FireFamilyPlus 5.0 Select fuel model G to see a familiar list of fuel model elements.
Activating NFDRS 2016 in FireFamilyPlus 5.0 Select fuel model Y to activate the NFDRS2016 model.
