4 Preface Meteorology was first considered in the sixth edition of the Landolt-Bbrnstein published in At that time, nine contributions on 153 pages featured in the volume on Astronomy and Geophysics edited by J. Bartels and P. ten Bruggencate. In Group V of the New Series several volumes have been published so far, dealing with all important are.as of geophysics as physics of the solid earth (Volumes V/la, b and V/2a, b), and oceanography represented as physics of the ocean (Volume V/3a, c). Volume V/4 covers meteorological data as physics of the atmosphere in three subvolumes. Subvolume V/4a, presented herewith, describes the thermodynamical and dynamical structures of the global atmosphere. Two further subvolumes are concerned with the physical and chemical properties of air and with climatology. A total of 17 authors have participated or will participate. During the last few decades, meteorology has worldwide experienced an unexpected boom owing to the growing interest in (earth) environmental problems. New observation and evaluation methods together with high performance computers have produced an ever increasing amount of data on the atmosphere, which are being exploited for weather and climate problems in various ways. In addition to the improved knowledge gained directly by these observations they are indispensable in the verification of the diagnosed and predicted atmospheric states obtained by mathematically based weather forecasting and climate models. The choice of observational data from the routine observational network to be actually published in the Landolt-Bornstein is a little problematic in that due to international agreement data are collected centrally. For about ten years these data have been stored on magnetic tapes and are available to everyone for further analysis. Therefore from the raw data widely used circulation parameters have been calculated to be printed in Landolt- Bornstein (subvolume a). This procedure, we hope, will improve the information content considerably. Another problematic issue, which has also occurred with other volumes of the Landolt- Bornstein referring to the geophysical sciences, was the partition between tables and figures on the one hand and text and theoretical background on the other hand. Not all contributions have strictly followed the Landolt-Bornstein philosophy of presenting data mainly in the form of tables and figures. In some areas it was inevitable to reserve a lot of space for the explaining text and theoretical background which is important for the understanding of atmospheric processes. But I hope that this practice will enrich the contents of this volume. I am pleased to acknowledge the effort which the authors invested in this publication; in many cases it was not easy for them to yield precedence to the Landolt-Bbrnstein over the publication of recent results. Neither was it an easy task to select from the findings of a quickly evolving science those that will still be valid in the future; this concerns air chemistry in particular. I should like to thank the editorial staff of the Landolt-Bdrnstein, especially Dr. W. Polzin, Dr. H. Seemtiller and Frau I. Lenhart, whose competent work was of great assistance, and last not least, Springer-Verlag for another example of excellent book production. Hamburg, September 1986 The Editor
