The year is now officially underway, and excitement is high as we begin our yearly planning. First, before you read another sentence, mark down your calendar now for the ASHRAE Shreveport Fall Golf Tournament for Friday, October 22!! Our new research promotion chair, Corey Wilson, is currently working on planning the event and more details on the event will be coming soon. In addition, our first meeting will be in September. That's right, there will not be a meeting in July or August. The next addition of the Flue Pipe will be for September sent at the beginning of the month. It will contain the details of the September meeting. I'm really looking forward to serving the chapter this year. Take care and we will see you soon. 2 2 Did you know...all ASHRAE monthly meetings qualify for 1 PDH hour. The State of Louisiana requires 30 PDH hours every 2 years in order to keep your engineering license. Golf Tournament Old Oaks Oct 22 IMPORTANT Beginning July 1, 2010, dues will increase to $180 for Associates and Members, and $20 for students. All other dues will remain the same. If you have a desire to have a more active role in ASHRAE, please Jason Dean. 3 3 July 2010 ASHRAE Scholarship Fund Several years ago, a Scholarship Fund was created by our local ASHRAE Chapter with the intent of providing College Scholarships to individuals that were enrolled in college and involved in our Industry. This year, we have established guidelines for recipients to be eligible for the scholarship and also that the scholarship fund principal will not be used for the scholarship, thus insuring that the fund will be self supporting and remain in place for good. In concert with this decision to award this scholarship on an annual basis, we have also made the decision to name the Scholarship in honor of one of our own. The award will be known from this day forward as the Dr. Roger Stanley Memorial ASHRAE Scholarship. Roger served ASHRAE for eight years, including back to back terms as President of our Chapter in 2008 and He also attended Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA and received his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. We felt that it was only fitting that we could honor the memory of Roger with this Scholarship in recognition for his hard work and dedication to the Shreveport Chapter of ASHRAE. Jason Dean, President, Roger Barnes, Secretary, Gary Patrick, Treasurer, Corey Wilson (not pictured), Research (answer from page 2) In 1758, Franklin and Hadley confirmed that evaporation of highly volatile liquids such as alcohol and ether, could be used to drive down the temperature of an object past the freezing point of water. They conducted their experiment with the bulb of a mercury thermometer as their object and with a bellows used to "quicken" the evaporation; they lowered the temperature of the thermometer bulb down to 7 F while the ambient temperature was 65 F. Franklin noted that soon after they passed the freezing point of water (32 F) a thin film of ice formed on the surface of the thermometer's bulb and that the ice mass was about a quarter inch thick when they stopped the experiment upon reaching 7 F. Franklin concluded, "From this experiment, one may see the possibility of freezing a man to death on a warm summer's day".
