28 Tips for Streak Testing The sample must be softer than the porcelain plate (about 6.5 on Mohs scale). Use a high-contrast background. White plate for dark streaks, black plate for light streaks. If the streak is white or colorless, use a different method of identification most nonmetallic minerals fall into this category.
