CURRENT PROJECTS: Identification and quantification of functional groups on carbonaceous materials (e.g., carbon nanotubes, carbon black,...) using Fluorescence Labeling of Surface Species (FLOSS). Effect of functional groups on the properties of carbon materials. Carbon nanopipettes: characterization of these submicron diameter tubes by spectroscopy (fluorescence microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, electrochemical methods); applications of carbon nanopipettes as nanoelectrodes in non-invasive electrochemical studies of biological cells. Near-IR and visible luminescence of carbon nanotubes; determine origin, and control parameters, of visible luminescence of carbon nanotubes for applications in bio-chemical sensing. Purification of CNTs from metallic catalyst and carbon impurities; identification and quantification of functional groups on purified carbon nanotubes by IR spectroscopy, FLOSS, temperature programmed desorption technique. Separation of single walled carbon nanotubes into metallic and semiconducting tubes.
